Background

Yuji was present at the hospital following his grandfather’s death. Though grieving, he resolved to follow his grandfather’s wish that he use his strength to help others and avoid dying alone. That resolve led him to enter Sugisawa Third High School to rescue classmates endangered by Sukuna’s finger and the curses drawn to it 79.

When a curse overwhelmed Megumi, Yuji swallowed Sukuna’s finger rather than abandon him. He survived, became Sukuna’s vessel, and later proved able to forcibly reclaim control of his body from the King of Curses 80 81. Within his Innate Domain, he learned that Ashura Maru was his cursed technique and that its full power required either a desire strong enough to earn recognition or victory over its first blade wielder, Kamado Tanjiro 80 81.

Satoru Gojo arranged Yuji’s enrollment at Tokyo Jujutsu High while his execution was suspended until he consumed Sukuna’s remaining fingers. Yuji accepted that eventual sentence, choosing to continue consuming the fingers so fewer people would die 82 85 86.

Yuji is instinctively compassionate and self-sacrificing. He risks himself for people he barely knows, refuses to abandon Megumi, and initially tries to preserve the lives of transfigured humans even when they attack him 79 80 92. He also forms friendships readily, approaching Junpei with direct kindness and treating him as a future friend before Junpei is prepared to accept one 92 93.

His optimism is paired with a blunt, uncomplicated manner. Yuji frequently asks Ashura Maru for explanations, reacts enthusiastically to his own growth, and remains candid even when discussing Sukuna or his execution 85 86 90.

Mahito’s cruelty changes Yuji’s outlook. After witnessing Mahito threaten innocent civilians and continue inflicting suffering, Yuji abandons his hope that curses can be reasoned with and resolves to kill every curse he faces 95. Later, rather than allowing guilt and vengeance to consume him, he turns them into a deliberate purpose: protect others, avenge the dead, and destroy Sukuna 116.
