Background

Naruto was born during the Nine-Tails attack on Konohagakure. Minato Namikaze sealed the Yang half of the Nine-Tails into him using the Eight Trigrams Seal, while Kushina Uzumaki's blade-shaped pendant—an Uzumaki relic associated with a god—was drawn into Naruto's body as well. Minato and Kushina died after entrusting Naruto's future to the village. 172

The pendant contained Ashura Maru, who was bound to Naruto as his blade master. Shortly after Naruto's birth, Ashura Maru discovered and sealed Asura's chakra within him so it would not influence Naruto's personality or development. Hiruzen Sarutobi refused Danzō's demand to turn Naruto into a controlled tailed-beast weapon and instead kept him under his protection. 173

Naruto spent eleven years training with Ashura Maru in a mental world, aided by a buff that allowed mental training to improve his physical body. Ashura Maru's companionship insulated him from the loneliness and need for public validation that the villagers' hostility might otherwise have created. 172 173

Appearance

After his three-year journey with Jiraiya, Naruto is described as a tall, handsome young man with shoulder-length golden hair, side-parted bangs, sky-blue eyes, and a gentle overall impression. He wears a black cloak over black-and-white clothing and carries his blade at his waist. 174 197

  • Initially wore his Leaf forehead protector around his neck because Ashura Maru disliked how it looked on his forehead. 173
  • Uses specially made tri-pronged kunai marked with Ashura Maru as Flying Thunder God coordinates. 177
  • During Demonification, pale-purple markings spread over his face, one eye turns pale purple, and a horn manifests from his forehead. 181 200
  • Manifests the black sword Ryujin Jakka when borrowing Ashura Maru's power. 181

Personality

Naruto is notably calm, polite, and observant for his age. He sees through Mizuki's manipulation immediately, recognizes staged tests arranged by Hiruzen, and regularly uses clones, deception, reconnaissance, and teleportation rather than relying on direct force. 174 177 182

He is fiercely loyal to companions. Naruto rejects success that requires abandoning Team 7, repeatedly risks himself to protect Sasuke and Sakura from Orochimaru, and refuses to retreat from missions after giving his word. 178 185 180

Despite his strength and willingness to kill dangerous enemies, Naruto does not seek death merely for power. He rejects Ashura Maru's temptation to retaliate against the villagers who mistreated him, refuses to pursue Impure World Reincarnation because of its cost, and states that he will not kill indiscriminately. 174 179 181

His central ambition is to become Hokage and end the cycle of war. He believes people can defy assigned roles and fate, demonstrated by his friendship with Gaara, his refusal to give up on Sasuke, and his rejection of Shion's prophecy of his death. 177 192 197 200

Abilities & Skills

Flying Thunder God Technique

Naruto learned the technique from the Scroll of Seals and rapidly mastered the spatial awareness needed to create chakra-based teleportation coordinates. His usage resembles Minato's, but he marks his kunai with Ashura Maru's name. 174 175 177

  • Teleports to marked tri-pronged kunai for instant repositioning, ambushes, rescues, and battlefield control. 177 180
  • Can combine teleportation with Rasengan, sword techniques, and Rasenshuriken. 183 200 203
  • Uses prepared kunai to provide emergency support to allies across a battlefield. 197
  • Early use rapidly drains his chakra and mental strength, especially when transporting multiple people. 185 186

Shadow Clone Technique

Naruto learned the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique from the Scroll of Seals. His clones can fight, train, and return their memories to him when dispersed. 174

  • Uses clones for coordinated assaults, decoys, independent training, reconnaissance, and escort duties. 177 178 182 200
  • Left a clone to train Sasuke while his real body refined chakra and studied space in the mental world. 176
  • Can create more than one hundred clones in emergencies. 186

Rasengan and Wind Release: Rasenshuriken

Ashura Maru selected the Rasengan from Minato's inherited techniques for Naruto to study. Naruto later mastered it and incorporated it into his teleportation-based combat style. 178 183

  • Uses Rasengan as a close-range finisher after Flying Thunder God repositioning. 183 203
  • Mastered Wind Release: Rasenshuriken during his three-year training journey. 197
  • Destroyed Moryo by teleporting directly before it and driving a Rasenshuriken into its body. 200

Ashura Maru and Ryujin Jakka

Ashura Maru is Naruto's godlike blade partner, sealed inside him through the Uzumaki pendant. After passing a test centered on rejecting hatred, Naruto gained Ashura Maru's recognition and the ability to borrow Demon Power. 172 181

  • Manifests Ryujin Jakka, a black sword capable of destroying weapons and damaging souls. 181 186
  • Used Draw Slash to break Zabuza's Executioner’s Blade, disperse the Water Prison, and severely wound Zabuza. 181
  • Cut Orochimaru's soul despite Orochimaru surviving the physical severing of his neck; Ryujin Jakka also damaged the Kusanagi Sword. 186
  • Ashura Maru can possess Naruto directly in extreme circumstances, as shown when an invisible slash severed Orochimaru's arm. 188
  • Ashura Maru's protection shields Naruto from genjutsu. 195

Demonification

Demonification temporarily amplifies Naruto's physical ability, speed, spatial technique control, and swordsmanship through Ashura Maru's Demon Power. 181

  • First activated against Zabuza after Naruto passed Ashura Maru's mental trial. 181
  • Allows Naruto to contend with opponents otherwise beyond his ordinary limits, including Orochimaru and Moryo. 186 200
  • Initially has a one-minute limit and leaves Naruto exhausted after use. 181
  • Risks transforming Naruto into a slaughter-driven demon if he fails to maintain himself; his body cannot safely withstand Ashura Maru's full power. 180 185

Swordsmanship and Breathing Styles

Ashura Maru appointed Kamado Tanjiro as Naruto's swordsmanship instructor in the mental world. Naruto chose the Dance of the Fire God from the Breathing Styles Tanjiro demonstrated. 183

  • Uses flame-based sword techniques including Blazing Sun, Scarlet Mirror, Dance of the Fire God: Fire Chariot, and Dragon Sun Halo: Head Dance. 195 196 200
  • Combined Dragon Sun Halo: Head Dance with Flying Thunder God to strike Moryo's central body and damage its soul. 200
  • Became highly skilled at maintaining and sharpening his blade during his journey with Jiraiya. 197

Nine-Tails Chakra and Demon Power Nourishment

Naruto contains the Yang half of the Nine-Tails and can voluntarily access part of its chakra without the beast resisting him. 172 190

  • Ashura Maru can convert the negative emotions and Demon Power of enemies Naruto kills into Nourishment, transferring a portion to Naruto and strengthening his body. 179 188
  • Naruto accepts this growth mechanism but explicitly refuses to kill recklessly for power. 179
  • The Nine-Tails gradually develops respect for Naruto after witnessing his concern even during its abuse at Ashura Maru's hands. 176

Summoning Technique

Jiraiya taught Naruto the Summoning Jutsu after recognizing that ordinary techniques could no longer challenge him. 190

  • Successfully summoned Gamabunta.
  • Has not yet formed a proper contract with Gamabunta. 190
