Background / History

Mephistopheles was born as an ordinary child in his current world, but received the memories of another person from a different world at birth. He considers those memories part of himself rather than evidence that he is an impostor, and openly pursues a life of magical study, enjoyment, and personal freedom. His childhood was marked by poverty; at age ten, he concealed his own unhappiness to comfort his exhausted single mother. 107 126

Before his involvement with Chaldea, he operated within Dawnlight and carried out missions against dangerous occult groups. As its former second-in-command, he was experienced in exorcism and the destruction of hostile magicians, including a Cthulhu Mythos ritual that had created Ghouls and summoned a Hound of Tindalos. 57 106 107

During the Greek Age of Gods, Mephistopheles met Medea and Hecate, received instruction and information about the gods, and began developing myth-based formulas. He fought in the Gigantomachy, helped destroy Typhon alongside Artemis and Medea, joined the voyage of the Argo, and defeated the Mother of Monsters. Zeus later offered him godhood, but Mephistopheles refused because he would not abandon humanity before completing his chosen magical path. 5 10 17 19 103

His deeds in Greece were only weakly preserved in history. Apollo explains that the Root rejects or fails to record parts of him, leaving him as an obscure figure in myth despite his involvement in major events. This incomplete record also limits the ability of enemies relying on the Root’s omniscience to predict him. 12 106 117

In 2004, Rin Tohsaka summoned Mephistopheles as an Archer through the power contained in her gemstone pendant. Though the Holy Grail system recognizes him as a Servant-class participant, he remains a living human rather than a Heroic Spirit. 31 36

At Chaldea, Lev Lainur Flauros immediately identified Mephistopheles as a dangerous anomaly and attempted to imprison him before the Chaldea catastrophe could unfold. Mephistopheles escaped by invoking Hermes through Mercury, but entered Lev’s Imaginary Number Magic labyrinth in the process. 2

Appearance

Mephistopheles commonly wears a Victorian-style trench coat or cashmere coat, enchanted clothing, and the four Mystic Codes associated with his elemental magic. He is able to endure severe cold through training or the spells engraved on his outfit. 2 10 139

Personality

Mephistopheles is irreverent, playful, and frequently provocative. He mocks institutions such as the Clock Tower, taunts enemies during battle, and has little patience for pretentious titles or claims of authority. His humor can become shameless, particularly around people he is attracted to. 2 6 56

His defining obsession is the pursuit of truth, embodied by the magic name Veritas000. He refuses shortcuts that would compromise his chosen path: he rejects Typhon’s offer of power, turns down Zeus’s offer of godhood, and refuses to let the Root or any religious authority define the limits of his understanding. 10 16 19 106

Despite his casual manner, he is decisive when confronting cruelty. He considers magicians who sacrifice civilians for knowledge irredeemable, and he opposes the idea that a single savior, god, or system should determine humanity’s future. 106 107
