Background
Mephistopheles was born normally in his present world, but another person’s memories were placed in his mind at birth. He openly accepts both sets of memories as his own identity and pursues magic, happiness, and truth on his own terms. 107
In his remembered past, he worked with Dawnlight and accepted an Anglican Church mission to eradicate magicians using the Mysterious Lord’s Seven Chapters for human sacrifice and immortality. Declaring the name Veritas000, he annihilated the cult, its Ghouls, and a Hound of Tindalos with Michael’s power. 106 107
During the Age of Gods, Mephistopheles met Medea and Hecate, summoned Hecate with his blood, and received a ring allowing him to cast magic with a portion of her authority. Medea subsequently joined his travels. 4 5
He became a hidden participant in Greek history: he fought in the Gigantomachy, received divine blessings from the Olympians, slew Typhon through a Zeus-based formula, declined Zeus’s offer of godhood, and joined the Argo expedition. Much of this history failed to be properly recorded because the Root rejected or could not record parts of his existence. 12 17 19 22 103
Appearance
Mephistopheles is a handsome, gentle-looking young man whose calm appearance contrasts sharply with his reckless combat habits. He favors a Victorian-style trench or cashmere coat, even wearing it in Antarctica without visibly suffering from the cold. 2 5 139
- His clothing bears four colored elemental symbols and can activate protective spells. 2 139
- In battle, a staff, dagger, astrolabe, and Holy Grail-like Mystic Code manifest around him as elemental implements. 2 10
- Angelic formulas create golden light and wings behind him, giving him an almost divine appearance. 10
- Though he has lived through events of the Age of Gods, he claims to still be a teenager. 103
Personality
Mephistopheles is irreverent, teasing, and confident, especially toward institutions, arrogant opponents, and people who attempt to control his future. He prefers stating the facts and reasoning with others, but bluntly admits that if reason fails, he will “beat them until they accept” it. 2 5
His defining obsession is the pursuit of truth, expressed through the magic name Veritas000. He treats combat as research, testing new formulas against powerful enemies even when doing so is dangerous. 10 56 125
Despite his arrogance and shameless humor, he is compassionate toward people burdened by guilt or suffering. He rejects the idea that one person has the right to sacrifice themselves on behalf of all humanity, supports Romani against his self-destructive guilt, and repeatedly seeks solutions that preserve lives rather than simply destroying threats. 103 106 142
Abilities & Skills
Golden Dawn Magic
Mephistopheles practices an occult system based primarily on Kabbalah and Enochian magic, while also drawing upon astrology, Tarot, Hermeticism, Egyptian mythology, and elemental correspondences. 10
- Converts life force into magical power without relying on Magic Circuits; the power reverts to life force when the spell ends. 2
- Uses the four elements—earth, wind, water, and fire—as a foundation for combat, movement, barriers, and ritual work. 10 69
- Can use divine power without conventional worship or a god’s direct consent by recreating it through magical theory and symbolism. 12
- Possesses unusually high compatibility with magecraft and can use Celtic formulas with ease. 12
Mythological Imitation Formulas
Mephistopheles recreates powers, weapons, and beings from legends by recording, analyzing, and reproducing their defining symbolism. His copies can draw power from the originals if their construction is sufficiently faithful. 12
- Star Sword Formula — a magical imitation of the planet-forged Star Sword; it has defeated Gigantes, Attila, and Gilgamesh’s full-powered Ea. 10 57 96
- Velber Transformation Formula — transforms him into a juvenile Sephar-like form with overwhelming physical strength, but consumes too much mana for prolonged use. 10
- False Zeus Formula — uses Greek myth recorded in his Grimoire to reproduce Zeus’s thunder and divine authority; it was powerful enough to destroy Typhon, but exceptionally difficult to control. 17
- False Excalibur — an imitation holy sword supported by his feat of killing the White Titan; it matched Gilgamesh’s Ea during their final clash. 57
- Heroic Spirit Transformation Formula — an experimental formula intended to use Heracles as a balanced template; early tests produced inconsistent physical enhancements. 133
Angelic Formulas
By declaring Veritas000 and invoking Christian symbolism, Mephistopheles manifests projections of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. Their presence vastly strengthens his command of the four elements. 10
- Michael — supplies destructive holy flames and demon-breaking power. 95 107 141
- Gabriel — contributes overwhelming power and is linked to the gemstone that carried Mephistopheles through chaotic time and space. 31
- Raphael — grants healing, guidance, sight, and elemental support; Mephistopheles used it to heal Asterius, treat Ramses II, and escape a shifting labyrinth. 103 136 137
- Uriel — one of the four archangelic manifestations reinforcing his elemental system and barriers. 10 57
- The summoned angels are limited projections rather than their true power; Mephistopheles originally modified the formula because a 5=6 magician could not properly cast the full version. 10
Temple and Conceptual Defense
His magical clothing can form a temporary mobile Temple, a defensive territory that blocked direct attacks from Gigantes. Its construction is materially limited and cannot be maintained indefinitely. 11
- Constructed a Temple barrier around Gilgamesh that Ea could not break because it failed to recognize the barrier as a “world.” 55 56
- Used an immature Fairyification Formula to impose a dragon trait on Gilgamesh, then exploited his anti-dragon status gained from killing Typhon. 56
- Can manipulate conceptual conditions, including disrupting inevitable death through opposing healing and immortality authorities. 137
- Rebuilt the Temple after reaching 7=4, upgrading its defenses from planetary-level to world-class. 143
Physical Combat
Mephistopheles is an exceptional close-range fighter despite being a magician. His divine blessings, body-enhancement formulas, speed, and martial skill allow him to physically overwhelm Servants. 12 81 125
- Moves and changes direction at supersonic speed. 11
- Defeated Scáthach and fought Shirou Emiya’s Unlimited Blade Works at close range. 81 122
- Endured and countered the causality-reversing Gáe Bolg, then dismantled Grail-enhanced Cú Chulainn’s armor through precise strikes. 125
- Can enhance weapons with elemental or angelic power, such as turning Ares’s sword into a flaming blade with Michael’s authority. 95
Healing, Souls, and Summoning
Mephistopheles is skilled in spiritual manipulation, healing, exorcism, and Servant summoning. 57 93 108
- Healed Asterius with mana and attempted to remove Ramses II’s conceptually inevitable death through Raphael’s authority. 103 136 137
- Used Sanctification Magic and his own blood to repair Mash Kyrielight’s hidden physical ailments and accelerated aging. 133
- Performed an exorcism to prevent Gilgamesh’s soul from being claimed by the Holy Grail, sending it to the Throne of Heroes instead. 57
- Developed a Servant-summoning system and can use archangelic power in place of ordinary magical energy. 106 108
Sephirotic Ascension
At 7=4, Mephistopheles has reached the highest level humanity can attain before entering godhood. He insists that this power comes from magical knowledge and advancement, not from becoming a god. 143
- Can control a portion of “The Infinite.” 143
- Possesses conceptual immortality through the Osiris-based cycle of death and rebirth, though he can still be truly killed or freed from the concept of death. 143
- His post-ascension output was calculated by Chaldea as several hundred times greater than before. 143
- His 7=4 state was initially unstable after creating the Lion King’s independent Phase. 142
Divine Blessings
Following the Gigantomachy, the Greek gods granted Mephistopheles numerous blessings. Their effects were weakened because the Root rejected him, but they remain valuable passive enhancements. 12
- Zeus — a body surpassing mortal limits, increasing his vitality and magical-energy conversion. 12
- Hera — a mind surpassing mortal limits. 12
- Poseidon — the ability to walk on water and breathe underwater. 12
- Athena — composure and calmness. 12
- Hades — resistance to instant-death effects. 12
- Demeter — regeneration while standing on the earth. 12
- Hephaestus — enhanced endurance. 12
- Aphrodite — increased charm. 12
- Artemis — sight that sees through things and near-perfect accuracy. 12
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Elemental Mystic Codes — a staff, astrolabe, dagger, and Holy Grail-like implement representing the four elements. 2 10
- Magical clothing — insulated by spells and capable of forming a temporary mobile Temple. 2 11
- Golden Grimoire — an endlessly expandable tome originally forged by Hephaestus; Mephistopheles records mythologies and magical research within it. 14 125
- Hecate’s ring — allows him to cast magic and access a portion of Hecate’s authority. 5
- Apollo’s bow — a golden bow granted by Apollo. 12
- Ares’s sword — a one-handed divine weapon that Mephistopheles can empower with Michael’s flames. 12 95
- Solomon’s Ring — constructed from gold, Enochian inscriptions, and Romani’s blood; improves Enochian casting, angelic summoning, and ritual efficiency. 93
- Angel Necklace — a Spirit Dress containing engraved crystals linked to Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel; improves control and output of angelic power. 118
Relationships
- Medea — Traveling companion, magical partner, and lover. Mephistopheles accepted her request to accompany him, strengthens her through rituals, and later plans her Sephirotic advancement. 5 14 143
- Artemis — Close companion and romantic partner. She fought beside him in Greece and is remembered as the Moon Goddess connected to his ancient legend. 17 19 138
- Hecate — Ally and source of early guidance. She exchanged information with him, gave him her ring, and remains protective of Medea. 4 5
- Ritsuka Fujimaru — Student and Chaldea ally. He trains her in Golden Dawn magic, gives her the Holy Grail for Chaldea’s use, and plans a conceptual Mystic Code suited to her. 93 97
- Olga Marie Animusphere — Chaldea director and increasingly trusted confidante. She authorizes his research, learns the truth of his memories, and worries about his dangerous experiments and relationships. 97 107 118
- Romani Archaman / Solomon — Ally and prospective student. Mephistopheles created Solomon’s Ring using Romani’s blood and challenged Romani’s belief that he alone must sacrifice himself for humanity. 93 106
- Rin Tohsaka — His Master during the Fuyuki Holy Grail War. He was summoned as her Archer and later offered to teach her about her inherited jewel and new magecraft. 31 37
- Heracles — Greek ally and fellow Argonaut. Mephistopheles respects his character and later helps him remain in the modern era so he can protect Illya. 20 71
- Atalanta — Former student and ally from the Argo expedition. He removed her Mad Enhancement in Orleans, prompting her to defect from Black Jeanne’s forces. 30 90
- Black Jeanne — Chaldea ally who openly admires his strength and shares a teasing, provocative rapport with him. 113 126
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chaldea Arrival and Lev’s Trap
Mephistopheles enters Chaldea intending to use his foreknowledge to prevent the coming catastrophe, including potentially killing Lev Lainur Flauros. Lev identifies him as Veritas000, seals him in a room, and traps him within an Imaginary Number Magic labyrinth; Mephistopheles escapes the room by invoking Hermes as the god of thieves. 2
Age of Gods and the Argo
In ancient Greece, Mephistopheles develops his mythological imitation magic, fights in the Gigantomachy, receives Olympian blessings, and kills Typhon. He refuses apotheosis because he does not want to compromise his human path toward truth, then travels with the Argonauts before being displaced through chaotic time and space. 10 17 19 22 31
Fuyuki Holy Grail War
After emerging in 2004 Fuyuki, Mephistopheles is summoned by Rin Tohsaka as Archer through her gemstone pendant. Although his Servant parameters appear poor because he remains human in his true body, he defeats Gilgamesh through Temple barriers, conceptual manipulation, angelic reinforcement, and the Star Sword Formula. 31 36 55 57
Chaldea Singularities
As a Chaldea combatant and researcher, Mephistopheles repeatedly resolves Singularities ahead of the main team. He defeats Black Jeanne’s controlled forces in Orleans, destroys Romulus, Lev, and Attila in Rome, trains Ritsuka, and develops equipment and summoning methods to prepare Chaldea for Goetia. 90 93 96 97
Goetia Countermeasures
Mephistopheles rejects Romani’s plan to bear humanity’s burden alone and instead supports a strategy to destroy the rings powering the Incineration of Human Order. He prepares the Angel Necklace and an enhanced Star Sword Formula as alternatives to relying solely on Durendal. 106 118
Camelot and the New Phase
Rather than allow the Lion King to die with her Singularity, Mephistopheles uses Rhongomyniad’s authority to create an independent Phase where Artoria can continue existing as King Arthur, the Lion King, and the Storm Lord. The act advances him to 7=4, which he later stabilizes through an Osiris-centered ritual. 142 143
Notable Quotes
“My name is Veritas000, meaning one who seeks truth!” 10
“If I truly cannot reason with them, then I will just beat them until they accept my reasoning.” 5
“Before reaching the necessary point, I will not allow myself to transcend humanity and step into a higher realm.” 19
Trivia
- When summoned as Rin’s Archer, his displayed parameters were only Strength E, Endurance E, Agility D, Mana D, Luck E, and Magic Resistance E because the Grail was evaluating his true human body rather than a Servant vessel. 35 36
- He regards the Fate Servant named Mephistopheles as an entirely separate, foolish individual and is visibly disappointed by the shared name. 112
- His deeds in Greece are widely treated as unofficial history despite their scale, largely because his existence was incompletely recorded by the Root. 103 138
- Hestia’s endlessly replenishing jar of fresh milk is stated to be his favorite among the Olympian gifts. 12
