Her gaze shifted to the old Daoist.
He wore an ordinary Daoist robe and carried a horsetail whisk in the crook of his arm.
Though his hair and beard were white and his face was lean, there was nothing frail about him.
"You're too courteous, Daoist priest."
Jiang Yuechu did not stand on ceremony and returned his salute.
She did not know who this old Daoist truly was.
But there was no mistaking the formidable aura around him.
Seeing this, Wei He hurried two steps forward and introduced him in a low voice. "Senior You Chenzi was once a grand elder of the Pure Yang Palace."
The Pure Yang Palace?
Jiang Yuechu raised an eyebrow.
She had heard the name before.
Liu Chen had mentioned that Xu Changfeng had received guidance from the Pure Yang Palace in his younger days.
But the Pure Yang Palace was on Zhongnan Mountain, near Chang'an. What was this old Daoist doing in this godforsaken borderland instead of cultivating in peace there?
Wei He seemed to see her confusion.
"He may be an elder of the Pure Yang Palace," Wei He continued, "but he was born and raised in Longyou."
"Thirty years ago, he stepped down as an elder and returned to Longyou Circuit."
At this point,
respect rose in Wei He's eyes.
"If not for his protection over the past thirty years, the demons along the frontier of the Western Regions would never have behaved so well."
Surprise flickered in Jiang Yuechu's eyes.
"So..."
"You aren't a member of the court, Senior?"
