Background

Jiang Yuechu is a modern twenty-first-century person who transmigrates into the body of an unfamiliar young woman in the Great Tang, a land plagued by man-eating demons. She awakens in a wilderness amid prison-uniformed corpses, Demon Suppression Guards, a dead tiger demon, and the wounded squad leader Pei Changqing. To survive, she kills Pei and takes his cultivation. 1 2

The body she inhabits belongs to Jiang Yuechu, daughter of Jiang Xun, the Vice Minister of Rites. The Jiang household was implicated in a case serious enough for her to be escorted toward the frontier, though she finds the circumstances suspicious: women of a condemned family would ordinarily be sent to the Music Office, while Jiang Xun held neither military nor financial authority. 7 Jiang Xun remains imprisoned in the capital, while Xu Changfeng privately speculates that Jiang Yuechu's parentage may be more politically significant than it appears; this remains unconfirmed. 49

Her survival changes when the Hundred Demons Register allows her to trace the shadows of slain demons in exchange for Dao Cultivation. The first such record, the Tiger Mountain God, grants her a saber art and begins her rapid rise in strength. 2

While advancing the Tiger Mountain God record, Jiang Yuechu experiences a life sequence of a frail South Mountain tiger cub. The cub survives abandonment, encounters the White Ape Lord, and later learns reading and blade use under him. 6

Jiang Yuechu is a slender, refined-looking young woman whose harmless appearance routinely causes others to underestimate her. She is eighteen during her early service in the Demon Suppression Office. 19 20

Personality

Jiang Yuechu is pragmatic, adaptable, and intensely survival-driven. Shortly after arriving in the Great Tang, she kills Pei Changqing for cultivation, disguises herself in a Demon Suppression Office uniform, and loots supplies from dead guards rather than remain helpless. 2 3

Despite claiming that she is neither a saint nor a hero, she is disturbed by the suffering at Upper Pan Village and chooses to fight the wolf demons threatening its inhabitants. 4 She later demonstrates the same uncompromising sense of retribution by brutally killing the Black Bear Demon after witnessing its torture of humans. 46

She is outwardly cold and economical with words, but she recognizes genuine help. She formally thanks Liu Chen for his guidance after becoming his equal in rank, rewards her own squad after their mission, and asks after Xu Nian's fate following his crippling injury. 23 35 47

Jiang Yuechu has little patience for intimidation, hierarchy games, or gender-based prejudice. She defeats Zhao Hu when he challenges her place in Xuan Camp, forces Chen Tong to kneel with a sheathed saber, and executes Baosha Temple monks despite their threats. 21 36 43
