Background

Zhou Yun originally transmigrated into the Emperor of Mankind, whose shriveled body is imprisoned on the Golden Throne. The Throne inflicts continuous, unbearable agony, but Zhou Yun can occasionally extend his will into recently deceased bodies and briefly escape into the living world. Fatal injuries in a chosen corpse are repaired by golden fire before he assumes control; death returns his consciousness to the Throne. 2

His first escape was into a forest hunter who survived for over a month among monstrous wildlife before being killed. Zhou Yun retained the hunter’s heightened senses, survival instincts, and hunting skills after losing that body. His next known host was an Underhive fortune-teller whose Emperor’s Tarot talent drew the attention of Inquisitor Katarinya Greyfax. 2 5

Greyfax recruited Zhou Yun as a retainer and trained his undeveloped psychic abilities. During a raid on a Corpse Grinder Cult, his attempt to evade a foretold cleaver attack placed him directly in its path. Greyfax mistook the resulting death for a deliberate sacrifice to protect her and commended his supposed loyalty as his soul returned to the Golden Throne. 1

Zhou Yun subsequently entered the corpse of Aulus, a gifted Macragge grammar-school teacher ruined by gambling, alcohol, and debt. Golden flame erased “Aulus” from the scholar’s notebook and replaced it with “Zhou Yun,” apparently altering how others perceived the host’s identity. Through the Scholar’s memories, Zhou Yun learned that he had reached Macragge long before the Great Crusade, shortly after—or around—the adoption of the young Roboute Guilliman. 3 4 5

Rather than flee Macragge and its inherited debts, Zhou Yun chose to remain. Cicero and a Slaanesh-linked conspiracy had engineered the Scholar’s collapse and suicide, while their larger scheme threatened Guilliman and the political order of Macragge. Zhou Yun therefore began developing his psychic power, investigating the cult, and pursuing a route into House Guilliman. 12 13

Personality

Zhou Yun is cynical, sarcastic, and openly resentful of the Emperor and the Golden Throne. His humor is a coping mechanism for pain, debt, cult activity, and repeated death; he routinely reduces cosmic threats to insulting or absurd comparisons. 2 13 20

He is also pragmatic and highly adaptive. Rather than treat his hosts’ lives as fixed identities, he studies their memories, skills, social ties, and local circumstances for anything useful. His willingness to cheat at gambling, trespass into Lucretius’s office, and manipulate opponents telepathically reflects an instrumental survival instinct. 4 24 32

Despite his detachment, Zhou Yun repeatedly acts protectively toward people who rely on him. He rejects Cicero after the latter threatens Tita, worries that abandoning Macragge could endanger her, compensates Lucretius after stealing from him, and seeks to guide Guilliman away from future catastrophe. 7 13 32 45

Golden Throne-linked Reincarnation

Zhou Yun’s true consciousness remains bound to the Emperor’s body on the Golden Throne. He can project part of his will through the Warp into newly dead bodies and return when a host dies.

Foresight is Zhou Yun’s strongest psychic discipline. He uses Emperor’s Tarot, direct precognitive spells, and probability manipulation to investigate threats and anticipate events.
