Background

Blake was reincarnated into the Pokémon world after dying from overwork in his previous life. He had been raised by his grandfather after growing up without dependable parents; after his grandfather died, Blake worked himself to death while living alone. His second life gives him the peaceful, self-directed existence he had lacked before 1.

His father’s family originated in Lavender Town, Kanto, and possesses a hereditary ability to communicate with spirits, soothe Ghost-type Pokémon, and exorcise dangerous entities. As the family’s traditional work became useful again through ruin exploration and supernatural investigations, Blake’s parents—James and Louise—frequently left Galar on expeditions, leaving him to manage the household and family shop 2 32.

Although his family is wealthy and would support any path he chose, Blake opened a Hulbury souvenir shop to give himself work. The business sells handmade charms and inherited protective items, continuing the clan’s practical traditions in a modern setting 2 3.

Appearance

Blake is a tall, lean teenager with black hair. At fourteen, he is already nearly six feet tall, though he lacks Uncle Sam’s heavily muscular build 6 7.

  • Lean build with some muscle, but he has difficulty gaining bulk 7
  • Black hair 6
  • Skin tone closer to bronze than the extreme pallor associated with his father’s side of the family 7
  • Wears a ceremonial outfit while presiding over the Great Fishing Festival, which he finds cumbersome and embarrassing 23

Personality

Blake deliberately avoids the ambition-driven lifestyle that killed him in his former life. He prefers a quiet home, a manageable business, good food, and occasional Pokémon battles over fame or the Champion title 5 18. He is nevertheless highly responsible: he cooks, keeps house, manages his shop, and treats Pokémon care as a Trainer’s obligation rather than a burden 1 17.

He is modest to the point of undervaluing his own craftsmanship and tactical ability. Blake considers his charms inferior beside his family’s heirlooms and describes himself as someone who merely organizes knowledge gathered by others 11 31. In battle, however, he is calm, observant, and willing to use deceptive or unconventional tactics to protect his partners and exploit an opponent’s weaknesses 5 28 48.

Blake’s compassion extends to hostile or vulnerable Pokémon. He refuses to assume that capture creates loyalty, gives Dhelmise a genuine choice about joining him, and waits for Dreepy to awaken before catching it 15 20.

Pokémon

Pokémon Joined / Status Notes
Haunter Began the story as Blake’s Gastly; evolved after defeating Dhelmise 3 14 Blake’s oldest and closest partner. A mischievous Ghost-type with exceptional gasification ability, strong status tactics, and a love of pranks 14 28
Dhelmise Captured at Rat Reef, then voluntarily accepted Blake as its Trainer 14 15 A powerful but slow Ghost/Grass-type. Blake trains it into a more disciplined battler and helps it learn moves including Iron Head, Flash Cannon, Iron Defense, Protect, and Energy Ball 21 39
Dreepy Hatched from the family’s long-dormant Pokémon Egg and was caught about a month later 17 21 A Ghost/Dragon-type that imprinted on Blake after hatching. It has exceptional inherited moves but initially lacks discipline and battle experience 18 21 30

Abilities & Skills

Ghost-Taming Clan Ability

Blake inherited the clan’s specialized Ghost-related power, which is distinct from psychic power and Aura. It is primarily suited to detecting, calming, and interacting with Ghost-type Pokémon and spirits 12 46.

  • Perceives Ghost-type Pokémon as black and evil spirits as red through a purple-tinted field of vision 12
  • Uses Phantump dew to amplify the ability’s detection range 12
  • Can see through Haunter’s Haze and track Ghost-types inside dark environments 13
  • Produces a purple-black aura that calms Ghost-type Pokémon and allows limited understanding of their thoughts 13
  • Used the aura to soothe Cynthia’s fearful Spiritomb and assess its condition 45
  • The ability is limited in scope; Blake describes it as useful mainly for attracting and soothing Ghost-types 46

Charmcraft and Held-Item Knowledge

Blake is a trained charm maker who continues his family’s craft through the Hulbury shop 3.

  • Handmakes Round Charms, Shiny Charms, Stability Charms, Exp. Charms, Safety Charms, Substitute Charms, and Health Charms 3
  • Can make Cleanse Tags and Spell Tags, though they are generally reserved for commissions due to their difficulty 3
  • Identified the Rat Reef talisman as an extraordinarily powerful and unusual Spell Tag, recognizing that its ink and energy differed from ordinary examples 15
  • Understands the use and production of rare held items, including family-produced Charcoal and Ghost Gems 31 46
  • Received two possible Fish Fossils from Leon and Sonia for potential research or revival 34

Trainer Tactics

Blake specializes in battlefield control, status conditions, type interactions, and misdirection rather than direct exchanges of power 5 31.

  • Uses Haze to remove stat boosts and obscure the field for Ghost-type partners 5
  • Combines poison, burn, confusion, Curse, trapping, and Hex to wear down stronger opponents 14 28 29
  • Accounts for real-world battle conditions, including the possibility of multiple status conditions affecting a Pokémon at once 14
  • Develops coded commands and coordinated surprise tactics with Haunter 13 28
  • Uses Substitute, Phantom Force, shadows, and feints to redirect stronger opponents’ attacks 47 48
  • Applies theoretical knowledge from his previous life while adapting it to a world where Pokémon can know many moves and battles are not turn-based 21

Pokémon Care and Training

Blake approaches training as long-term care rather than a race for immediate strength 3 17.

  • Supports delayed evolution when it benefits a Pokémon’s physical and psychological development 3
  • Plans diets around individual Pokémon needs, including specialized Ghost-type ingredients 3 18
  • Maintains living spaces for his Pokémon, including cleaning and adapting an aquarium for Dhelmise 17
  • Allows Dreepy to decide whether it truly wants to battle rather than forcing it into a Trainer’s path 30
  • Gives Pokémon difficult but controlled lessons to develop discipline, as seen in Dreepy’s first battle against Thwackey 29 30

Equipment and Notable Items

  • Ancient Spell Tag — Recovered from the Rat Reef shipwreck’s safe. It contains immense Ghost-type energy as well as an unidentified second energy; golden and silver glimmers are visible within its black surface 15 20
  • Artificial Ghost Gem diamond — A large diamond that absorbed energy from the Spell Tag and effectively became an artificial Ghost Gem 17
  • Cleanse Tags — Used to repel and help calm Ghost-type Pokémon during the Dhelmise incident 13
  • Dusk Ball — Used to capture Dhelmise after their battle 14
  • Handmade charms — His shop’s principal products; their quality drew immediate attention from Trainers, merchants, Macro Cosmos, and online customers 9 10

Relationships

  • Haunter — Blake’s first known Pokémon partner, originally a Gastly. Their relationship is affectionate, chaotic, and highly coordinated in battle 1 14 28.
  • Dhelmise — A former opponent whom Blake recruited through negotiation and respectful treatment. Dhelmise values Blake’s gifts and considers his household a genuine family 15 17 27.
  • Dreepy — A newborn Pokémon that imprinted on Blake as the first living being it saw. Blake acts as both Trainer and parental caretaker 18 21 30.
  • Lulina — Blake’s childhood sweetheart and closest human companion. They work together, tease each other, and show clear mutual affection despite both becoming embarrassed by it 2 11 38.
  • James — Blake’s father, a ruin explorer and Ghost-Taming Clan practitioner. James mentors Blake in expedition preparation while treating him as a capable future successor 20 35 39.
  • Louise — Blake’s energetic and openly affectionate mother. She strongly encourages his relationship with Lulina and embarrasses him with public displays of affection 20 35.
  • Uncle Sam and Anna — Lulina’s parents and long-standing family friends who treat Blake like family. Sam supports Blake’s Rat Reef operation and trusts his Ghost-type expertise 8 13 38.
  • Haisewai — Lulina’s teacher and Hulbury Gym Leader. She recognizes Blake’s tactical ability, gives him the Rat Reef map, and hopes rivalry will motivate him to take battling more seriously 5 33.
  • Leon — A friendly rival and tactical peer. Their battle teaches Leon the value of status tactics while giving Blake an opportunity to train Dhelmise and Dreepy 26 30 31.
  • Cynthia and Steven — Fellow young explorers during the Sinnoh expedition. Blake assists Cynthia with Spiritomb’s care and battles alongside both of them in a three-way melee 43 45 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Hulbury Shop Opening

Blake prepares and opens his family’s charm shop in Hulbury’s seaside scenic area. The shop unexpectedly sells out in a single day after prominent visitors and an online post bring attention to the quality of his handmade charms 1 9 10.

Rat Reef Investigation

After Haisewai and Uncle Sam draw his attention to attacks at Rat Reef, Blake identifies the culprit as Dhelmise. He leads a containment plan inside the wreck, attempts negotiation, defeats Dhelmise with Haunter’s status-based strategy, and ultimately recruits it voluntarily 8 12 13 14 15.

Expansion of His Team

The powerful Spell Tag recovered from Rat Reef activates a Pokémon Egg that had remained dormant for over twenty years. The egg hatches into Dreepy, expanding Blake’s team from Haunter and Dhelmise to three Ghost-type partners 17 18 21.

Battle with Leon

Blake battles Leon in a three-on-three match, using Dhelmise, Haunter, and Dreepy. Haunter’s layered status tactics force Leon’s Charmeleon to evolve into Charizard, while Dreepy’s defeat by Thwackey becomes a lesson in obedience, teamwork, and humility 26 29 30.

Sinnoh Ruin Expedition

After James returns to Galar, Blake joins his parents’ League-approved expedition to ruins near Mt. Coronet. He travels with Steven and Cynthia, provides Ghost-type expertise, and helps Cynthia begin caring for her socially anxious Spiritomb 35 43 45 46.

Three-Way Melee Incident

Blake, Steven, and Cynthia participate in an escalating free-for-all between Haunter, Metang, and Gible. Blake uses Haunter’s Substitute and Phantom Force to target Gible, but an unexplained outside influence later drives all three Trainers and their Pokémon into unusually reckless behavior 47 48 49.
