  • He compared the Rubber People Kingdom’s social and political systems with those of Japan and China, and wondered how it could wield cannons while farming with stone tools.
  • Watanabe concluded that the Kingdom’s Divine King, feudal kings, and regional clan leaders held the power and wealth he needed to gain support and return to his main family.
  • After meditating, Watanabe inferred that the Rubber People’s western voyage sought products, skilled artisans, and knowledge unavailable or lost in their lands.
  • Watanabe abandoned his hope of crossing to Buddhist liberation and declared that he would reclaim his true name, Ryuzoji Iehiro.

Ch. 1285The Divine Monkey's Worry: Not Feathers Flying Wild, But the Monkey of the Heart Climbing the Tree

After conquering Shamu City, Monkey Kuluka decided the Great Lake Legion had to return south rather than pursue Feather Prince, and he appointed Guzman to hold the northern stronghold. Kuluka was left worrying that his small circle of trusted Mexica could not govern the vast, newly conquered territory without pushing him toward marriage alliances or greater political power.

  • Monkey Kuluka assessed the northern frontier and asked Guzman to determine the army’s next move.
  • Guzman concluded that poor northern supplies, the need to keep the Great River within reach, and May’s spring plowing made further pursuit of Feather Prince impossible, so the army had to return south.

Ch. 1287The Second Apa Plain

Yoloki oversaw the forced conversion of more than forty thousand North Tecos tribespeople at Shamu City and assessed the surrounding valley’s potential for large-scale farming. The chapter left him envisioning reservoirs and flood control that could turn the Great Sand River basin into a vast granary.

  • Yoloki and the kingdom priests conducted a mass conversion at Shamu City, sacrificing those who refused and the captured Tecos God-descendants and nobles.
  • The priests taught converts that Huitzilopochtli rewarded obedience and punished unbelief, planting fear and faith through the rite.
  • Yoloki considered his rise through the priestly ranks and the balance between Mexica and Purepecha missionary priests in the kingdom.
  • Yoloki recognized that the rainy mountain valley around Shamu City could support far more people if its rivers were harnessed for irrigation.
  • Yoloki concluded that reservoirs, flood control, and cultivation of the Great Sand River plain could unlock the region’s potential as a second Apa Plain.

Ch. 1288Recruiting Feathers, Ten Years of Running Away Power!

After converting forty thousand Tecos tribespeople, Monkey Kuluka prepared to secure Shamu City and bring most of the captives south. Concerned that Feather Prince’s battle-hardened clan could threaten the Kingdom’s northern expansion, he chose to offer him surrender terms rather than risk a campaign, leaving Guzman to negotiate if the envoys found him.

  • Monkey Kuluka assigned Guzman three thousand troops to garrison Shamu City and left ten thousand converted Tecos to farm while taking thirty thousand south.
  • Monkey warned Guzman not to pursue Feather Prince into the northern wilderness, explaining that a defeat could undermine the Kingdom’s control over the newly subdued tribes.

The battle was underway when a young Purepecha chief threatened to burn the village’s grain, and Penguari recognized him as Feather Prince.

  • Peng Bage persuaded Feather Penguari that Tin River Village Stockade was lightly defended and could not be an ambush, so Penguari ordered the clan to approach it cautiously.
  • Penguari changed the Feather Clan’s banner and sent messengers to ask to trade, then to borrow grain; Little Crow Xiteweiwei hesitated and asked how much grain they wanted.
  • Penguari took the stockade’s question as a sign of guilt and ordered the Feather warriors and mixed tribesmen to attack.
  • The assault turned into a bloody fight as arrows and defenders’ weapons killed hundreds, while Feather warriors began moving toward the weaker sides of the stockade.
  • A young chief on the wall threatened to burn all the village’s grain unless the attack stopped, and Penguari froze when he recognized him.

Ch. 1293"Chu" Song from All Sides

After the Feather Clan seized Tin River Stockade, Feather Penguari learned that the Lake Kingdom had a powerful outpost far to the north. As both the Feather Clan and Little Crow’s flotilla mourned their homeland in song, Penguari sent Peng Bage to invite Little Crow to share a hot meal and discuss returning the stockade and its captives.

  • The Feather Clan searched Tin River Stockade’s warehouses and discovered stores of tin ore, silver, guano, coal, and Bronze weapons.
  • Captured Purepecha countrymen told Feather Penguari about the Lake Kingdom’s Leijin Town and its northern army, leaving him worried about the enemies ahead.
  • The Feather Clan celebrated its newly acquired food and shelter, then sang a mournful song about its lost homeland as Feather Penguari wept with them.
  • Little Crow’s flotilla answered with its own hometown song, and Little Crow thought of his grandfather and Atoyac Lake.

Ch. 1294Changes on the Tin River

Little Crow Xiteweiwei accepted Peng Bage’s invitation to meet Feather Penguari, believing the Feather Clan would return Tin River Stockade and its goods. Penguari exposed the invitation as a trap, then changed course after learning Little Crow’s warnings revealed the small forces stationed in the Northern Continent, leaving Little Crow confused and trapped in the clan’s embrace.

  • Peng Bage persuaded Little Crow Xiteweiwei to come to Tin River Stockade by promising the Feather Clan would return the stockade, its goods, and the wounded captives.

At dawn, he cast off his noble trappings, embraced his identity as a “Night Demon,” and converted to the Main God of The Sun as he sought a path to survival for himself and his clan.

  • Peng Bage urged Feather Penguari to leave Yu Yan and Chi Yan with Little Crow Xiteweiwei, but Penguari planned to wait and later claim their children were Little Crow’s, tying him to the clan.
  • Feather Penguari explained that the migrating Feather Clan needed a stable refuge and intended to surrender to the Lake Kingdom rather than rely on Little Crow, whom he believed lacked the status to offer them a good deal.
  • Penguari told Peng Bage that they would seek High Priest Ge Niao in Leijin Town and create a need for the Feather Clan’s help so they could secure a high price for their surrender.
  • As dawn neared, Feather Penguari threw away his feather crown and sacrificial robe, danced, and proclaimed that he had become the poisonous, fast Night Demon after years of fleeing and fighting for the clan.
  • At sunrise, Feather Penguari watched the light, wept, and converted to the Main God of The Sun, asking for a bright road to life for the clan and for himself.
