Background

Subordinate position in the United Army

Before its military modernization, East Asia was a major industrial contributor to the United Army but had little access to advanced technology or strategic decision-making. It was regarded as expendable by the Atlantic Federation despite supplying troops, funding, factories, and logistical personnel 1 3.

United Army contribution over 18 years East Asia’s share
Military funding 32%
Logistical-support personnel 27%
Basic industrial capacity 41%
High-end technical-cooperation applications approved 2 of 47 (4%)

East Asia received only a Dagger maintenance authorization and a secondary shipborne-communications development license from those approved applications 11.

Its strategic advantages were its population of four billion Naturals, heavy-industrial capacity, annual steel output of thirty million tons, and two million tons of rare-earth production 12.

Independent technology path

Lin Yuan rejected dependence on Atlantic Federation equipment and proposed an independent mobile-suit research system based on heavy armor, mass production, and ordinary soldiers rather than elite pilots 2 12.

The Spark Project exploited the Heliopolis attack to obtain GAT-X frame data, Phase-Shift Armor details, weapons parameters, control-software architecture, and Dawn Society engineering logs 8. East Asia then established the 811 Institute as a cross-department military-industrial platform directly subordinate to the Special Equipment Bureau 9 11.

Ceramic Steel became the foundation of the Black Iron program. Though heavier than Phase-Shift Armor and vulnerable to sustained beam fire, it was cheaper, required no energy supply, resisted ballistic attacks, and could be industrially mass-produced 17.

Break with the Atlantic Federation

East Asia’s efforts at technological independence caused repeated confrontations with Atlantic Federation Minister William Sykes. Lin Yuan challenged the Federation’s monopoly over advanced military technology, froze low-end alloy-project reviews, and refused to surrender wreckage from the April 2 border incident without formal explanations 10 29.

The Atlantic Federation initially underestimated Black Iron units as slow, impractical prototypes after East Asia leaked false reports exaggerating their overheating and ammunition-feed problems 46.

Military Doctrine and Capabilities

East Asia’s doctrine prioritizes survivability, formation fire, logistics, and tactical assistance over individual ace pilots. Its basic principle is to reduce the decision-making burden on Natural pilots: tactical systems identify targets and correct ballistics, while pilots focus on surviving and firing 21.

Asset / Program Function Documented characteristics
Black Iron Heavy armored mobile suit Uses Ceramic Steel armor and Bombard Guns; intended for formation-based defensive fire rather than high-mobility duels 17 21
Bombard Gun Mobile-suit weapon Fires rocket-assisted delayed-implosion rounds capable of damaging a cockpit through armor or exhausting Phase-Shift Armor through repeated impacts 18
Black Iron Squad tactics Anti-ace doctrine Three coordinated Black Irons achieved a 78% simulated suppression rate against a Strike-class high-mobility unit, compared with 11% for one unit 24
Machine Soul—Jiachen Tactical-assistance AI Provides ballistic correction, route prediction, ammunition tracking, target information, and squad-level coordination while pilots retain weapons authorization and refusal rights 26 242 302
Longxiang / Ryūjō units Specialized test mobile suits Expanded East Asia’s heavy-force doctrine into more responsive and aerial roles 84 96
Mountain Quellers Heavy armored security units Used for evacuation-corridor enforcement, urban containment, and anti-Black Knight operations 178 184
Emperor-class battleships Strategic space fleet Equipped with Volcano Cannons, plasma systems, and Machine Soul support; the Kunlun served as East Asia’s principal Third Pole vessel 104 109
Void Shield / Sky Curtain Strategic defense network Began as shipborne protection and expanded toward orbital, industrial-base, and city-level defense against strategic weapons 132

History

Black Iron deployment

East Asia first deployed the unfinished Black Iron prototype against unidentified Dagger units entering its air-defense identification zone near Industrial Zone Nine. Despite mechanical risks, Han Zheng successfully airdropped the machine and engaged the intruders 19.

Subsequent tests validated East Asia’s formation-fire doctrine. Three Black Irons eliminated six simulated Ginn-type units in four minutes and twenty-seven seconds, prompting the Ground Forces to requisition eight units despite concerns over ammunition use, resupply speed, and pilot training 26.

In North Africa, East Asia used Black Iron units to gather data on ZAFT forces, negotiate intelligence-and-supply exchanges with Hassan Tariq’s resistance organization, and force Andrew Waltfeld to withdraw after crippling his custom Baku 32 39.

Intervention in Orb

East Asia positioned the Kunlun carrier battlegroup off Orb during the United Army’s buildup, publicly describing the deployment as an anti-submarine exercise while refusing to treat Orb’s neutrality as protection 52.

After United Army forces crossed East Asia’s exercise exclusion zone during the invasion of Orb, East Asian Black Iron units intervened. Their Type-2 Jia armor withstood beam-rifle fire, while Bombard Rounds disabled or destroyed Short Sword IIs in minutes 55 56.

East Asia later negotiated a joint-defense arrangement with Orb: Orb retained strategic authority and veto power, while East Asia controlled immediate battlefield decisions. Dawn Society’s data was placed under joint supervision, and East Asia provided air cover for civilian evacuations 60.

Third Pole at Yakin

The East Asian Republic formally commissioned its Space Force in the Orb Special Zone. Its initial structure included three escort groups and one flagship task force, with the Great Wall as temporary flagship and Orb as the principal technology and supply base 100.

With GENESIS preparing to fire, East Asia authorized Mirror-Sunder Operation. The Space Force entered the Yakin battlefield as the Third Pole, with the declared objective of disabling extermination weapons without serving either the United Army or ZAFT 103 104.

The Kunlun’s Volcano Cannons destroyed sections of GENESIS’s main reflector array and severed its power-supply ring, disrupting its Earth-targeting axis 110. East Asia later destroyed GENESIS’s main mirror array, backup array, and energy foundation, ending the immediate extinction threat 121.

Postwar political position

After Yakin, East Asia rejected Atlantic Federation control of GENESIS wreckage and secured a three-party sealing arrangement with the PLANT Interim Council and the Archangel observer group 121.

The resulting ceasefire recognized:

  • East Asia’s independent postwar adjudication seat.
  • Temporary East Asian control of the Yakin War Zone.
  • East Asian authority to seal GENESIS wreckage.
  • External review of the Unified Nuclear Link.
  • Legal recognition of the Orb Special Zone. 130

East Asia also proposed the Strategic Weapons Notification and Restriction Mechanism, requiring states to register weapons capable of orbital, city-destroying, or large-scale reactor strikes without compelling disclosure of core designs or fire-control systems 129.

Foundation conflict

When the Royal Foundation used Requiem, Black Knights, human experimentation, and royal authentication systems to destabilize Eurasia, East Asia sought formal United authorization for a limited intervention. Its stated objectives were rescue operations, Requiem disarmament, and dismantling the Black Knight command chain rather than territorial occupation 291 293.

East Asian forces later coordinated with Eurasian, Orb, PLANT, and Atlantic authorities against the Foundation. The coalition distinguished coerced victims from perpetrators, preserved medical routes, and placed Eurasian judicial review over the operation 300.

Governance and Administration

Orb Special Zone

The Orb Special Zone retained local civil self-government but placed military industry under 811 Institute standards. East Asia received authority over territorial defense, military exports, and military-related diplomacy, while Orb retained civilian administration and purely civilian diplomacy 77.

East Asia and Orb developed a governance model built around electronic ledgers, financial audits, public hearings, civilian oversight of the garrison, and reconstruction reporting 93 98.

Orb reconstruction measure Documented outcome
Port production recovery 41% of prewar level
Reemployment in southern and western resettlement districts 27%
Reduction in garrison complaints 60%
Food-delivery efficiency after anti-corruption measures 97%

811 Standardization Overhaul

East Asia required Dawn Society to integrate its permissions, material records, personnel access, and external data links into the 811 security framework. The overhaul preserved engineer attribution, salaries, identities, and family protections while imposing wartime penalties for unauthorized arms contacts 127.

The audit uncovered hidden Gundam-derived framework materials and evidence that Sairan Family consultants had copied files through a harbor-maintenance network before the Orb Defense War 127.

Oversight of Machine Soul systems

East Asia’s Machine Soul programs are treated as useful but potentially dangerous systems. Field doctrine requires manual interface-disconnect functions, pilot training for conflicting information, preserved logs, and human authority over lethal decisions 242 250 302.
