Background

Ghost Physician Ghosthand established apothecaries throughout the Returning Ruins after fleeing the Ten Continents. Formerly one of the Three Gold Sect’s Four Divine Healers, he broke with the sect over his belief that humans could be made “perfect” through experimental alteration; after conducting human experiments and cutting off his master’s hands, he escaped to the Returning Ruins and expanded his medical enterprise through disciples and branch apothecaries 29.

Ghosthand’s Eighteenth Apothecary operated in Red Tears City as a prominent storefront near the city entrance. It advertised blood purchasing, paid medicine trials, pills, and temporary lodging for test subjects, while its neighboring Leaf House sold Immortal Leaf smoke 27 28 38.

Operations

Medicine Testing

The Eighteenth Apothecary recruited impoverished residents, addicts, and newcomers as paid test subjects. Its offers included compensation, temporary residency, and the possibility of becoming an apprentice, but its reputation was sufficiently deadly that many people considered selling blood safer than testing medicine 27 28.

• Test subjects were observed in rear-courtyard rooms after being forced to swallow experimental pills. 28 33
• Lodging cost one tael of silver per night and did not include food. Staff expected many testers to die and intended to retain their belongings afterward. 31
• The apothecary refused treatment to a tester whose intestines prolapsed after a trial unless he could pay. 36

Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pill

Sun Sheng created the Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pill, which stimulated the liver to generate tangible liver-borne killing qi. Its ordinary cost was progressive liver corrosion and eventual dissolution 29.

Immortal Leaf Trade

The apothecary was financially tied to the neighboring Leaf House, where Immortal Leaf was sold and smoked. Apothecary personnel regarded the addicted Huang Qu as a valuable source of customers 38.

• Immortal Leaf produced powerful wish-driven hallucinations and severe dependency. 38
• Its quality was attributed to Ghost Hand Apothecary’s secret craftsmanship and cultivation under Red Tears City’s red rain. 40
• Gu Qingfeng ultimately set fire to the Immortal Leaf warehouse or hall, causing the blaze to spread into the apothecary. 45

• Ghost Physician Ghosthand — Founder and owner of the apothecary network. A former Three Gold Sect divine healer who pursued unethical human experimentation and opened dozens of branches across the Returning Ruins. 29 50
• Sun Sheng — Ghosthand’s disciple, manager of the Eighteenth Apothecary, and creator of the Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pill. He treated test subjects as material to be harvested for killing intent. 32 36
• Zhao Di — Night-watch physician at the Eighteenth Apothecary. He participated in the public conflict with Jiangzhong Hall and was killed during Gu Qingfeng’s attack. 37 43

Destruction of the Eighteenth Apothecary

Gu Qingfeng entered the Eighteenth Apothecary as a test subject, initially seeking payment and dangerous medicines that his ability could safely exploit. As he learned that Sun Sheng intended to kill and harvest him, he decided to destroy the establishment 28 32 41.

Sun Sheng attempted to ambush Gu Qingfeng at night and extract his Liver-Killing Intent. Gu Qingfeng counterattacked, pursued the fleeing proprietor, and killed him with Sun Sheng’s own surgical knife after overcoming the Ghosthand Blood-Draining Thousand-Thread Hand 42 43.

Gu Qingfeng then infiltrated the storefront using Sun Sheng’s corpse or appearance as a lure, killed Zhao Di, a clerk, and a medicine boy, and consumed the apothecary’s remaining Liver-Severing Qi-Killing Pills and its Red Taisui Cinnamon Pill 43 44. He subsequently ignited the neighboring Immortal Leaf stockpile; the fire spread into the apothecary and left the site as charred ruins 45 51.

Before leaving, Gu Qingfeng used Sun Sheng’s hand to leave a misleading “Jiang” clue. Zhao Situ blamed Jiangzhong Hall, triggering repeated clashes between the Ghosthand Lineage and the Jiangzhong Sect 45 47 50.
