Background / History
Nagumo and Asahina Nazuna have known each other since childhood. Asahina recalls protecting him from bullies when they were younger, though Nagumo eventually surpassed her physically. Their long history remains important to his inner circle even after their relationship becomes strained. 271 273
He succeeded Horikita Manabu as Student Council President. Rather than celebrating the uncontested handover, Nagumo resented inheriting a position he had never truly won from Manabu and privately vowed to defeat his predecessor before graduation. 85
Under Nagumo, the Student Council and his year became dominated by a philosophy of individual strength. Ryuuen describes his rule as one that expelled students who resisted him, leaving behind the Nagumo Faction and those too intimidated to dissent. 110 111
Appearance
Nagumo is a blond young man, initially remembered by Hiyori as having a frivolous demeanor. His appearance, academic ability, and office contribute to his popularity with girls. 110 111
- Blond hair. 110
- Considered conventionally attractive and socially charismatic. 111
- Often projects ease and superiority, even during confrontations. 443 483
Personality
Nagumo is ambitious, proud, and intensely conscious of status. He values individual capability over cooperation, seeks to establish absolute control, and regards student politics as a means to prove his superiority over Horikita Manabu. 85 110
He is also calculating and coercive. Nagumo uses group pressure, Student Council authority, rewards, and personal leverage to force others into favorable positions. His behavior toward female students is particularly objectifying: he invited Sakayanagi to become his “private property” and tried to make Horikita become his girlfriend as the price of losing a fight. 111 231 232
Despite his arrogance, Nagumo can remain composed under pressure and recognize when he has overreached. During the wolf hunt, he eventually admitted that he had overestimated himself and apologized to the group. 310 Near graduation, the collapse of his control over the third years leaves him questioning the purpose of his three years at the school. 496
Abilities & Skills
Leadership and Institutional Control
Nagumo is an effective administrator with broad influence over the Student Council and the third-year students.
- Dominated his year through the Nagumo Faction and the removal of dissenters. 110 111
- Assumed the Student Council presidency after Horikita Manabu stepped down. 85
- Maintained a Student Council described as more efficient than it had been under Manabu, despite his radically different philosophy. 283
- Organized third-year students during the Uninhabited Island Exam to monopolize top event placements and funnel benefits toward Class A. 226
- Took command of the stranded students after the ship fire and coordinated labor, shelter, hunting, and survival decisions. 296 302 306
Manipulation and Strategic Planning
Nagumo routinely treats people as assets, pawns, or obstacles within larger plans.
- Offered a twenty-million-point reward to any first-year who could get Ryuuen expelled. 190
- Used more than thirty third-year students to surround Ryuuen and Ibuki rather than accept a one-on-one fight. 225
- Recruited Ryuuen into the Student Council, appointed him Vice President, and attempted to groom him as his successor. 282 283 284
- Arranged circumstances that drew Ryuuen into the conflict surrounding Hoshinomiya Chie, Director Sakayanagi, and Tsukishiro. 274 284
- Managed people through alternating pressure and incentives, such as distributing emergency food to secure continued cooperation during the island survival period. 307
Physical Ability
Nagumo is a capable fighter, though he is not invincible.
- Easily overpowered Horikita Suzune in their confrontation at grid I3. 231
- Used controlled but painful strikes against Horikita after she refused his demand. 232
- Was decisively defeated by Ryuuen after underestimating him in a direct fight. 232
- Is considered by Ryuuen to have combat ability roughly comparable to Tsukishiro, though this is Ryuuen's assessment. 280
- Survived a close encounter with a mother wolf after his arrow struck its eye; he was injured during the attack and required Kiriyama and Ayanokoji's intervention. 310 311
Relationships
- Horikita Manabu — Predecessor and unresolved rival. Nagumo inherited Manabu's position but considered the handover unsatisfying because he had never defeated him directly. 85
- Ryuuen Kakeru — Rival, target, reluctant subordinate, and eventual successor. Nagumo placed a bounty on Ryuuen, later recruited him as Vice President and ultimately resigned in his favor. 190 282 475
- Asahina Nazuna — Childhood friend. Asahina protected him when they were young and remains emotionally tied to him despite their conflicts. 193 271 273
- Horikita Suzune — Student Council Vice President under Nagumo. He accepted her because of her ambition, then later attempted to coerce her into becoming his girlfriend. 192 231 232
- Director Sakayanagi — Secretly used Nagumo as a pawn to approach Tsukishiro. Nagumo later claimed loyalty to the Student Council rather than to Tsukishiro. 279 284
- Ayanokoji Kiyotaka — A student Nagumo seeks to have expelled, creating a major divide between Nagumo and Ryuuen. 284 285
- Kiriyama — Subordinate and later enemy. Kiriyama served under Nagumo, saved him from the mother wolf, then orchestrated a rebellion driven by resentment and revenge. 226 311 492 493
- Kiryuuin Fuuka — Former admirer turned adversary. Kiryuuin rejected Nagumo in their first year and later accused him of framing her for theft; Nagumo denied involvement. 483
- Miyamizu Saki — A girl connected to Kiriyama's vendetta. Kiriyama blamed Nagumo for her expulsion and for the fact that she loved Nagumo rather than him. 493 495
Story Role / Major Arcs

Conflict with Ryuuen and the Uninhabited Island Exam
Nagumo places a bounty on Ryuuen and later corners him during the Uninhabited Island Exam. He forces Ryuuen into the Student Council by offering supplies and membership, but their conflict escalates when Nagumo targets Horikita. Ryuuen defeats him in a direct fight. 190 225 231 232
Ship Conspiracy
Nagumo imprisons Hoshinomiya Chie in the Surveillance Room and is revealed to be operating between Director Sakayanagi and Tsukishiro. He allows Ryuuen to resolve Chie's imprisonment, then uses the incident to pull Ryuuen further into the Student Council. 274 279 280 282
Succession Plan
Nagumo attempts to prepare Ryuuen as the next Student Council President, believing that Ryuuen's ability and willingness to overturn his legacy make him the most suitable successor. Ryuuen accepts only the Vice President role at first. 283 284
Island Survival Leadership
After a ship fire leaves students stranded, Nagumo becomes the group's leader. His decisions range from practical organization—such as selecting a camp and assigning tasks—to dangerous overconfidence, most notably his attempt to hunt a mother wolf. 296 306 310
Third-Year Collapse and Resignation
With graduation near, rumors and accusations destabilize the third years.
