Background / History

Ayanokoji was raised in the White Room, an isolated program intended to cultivate exceptional individuals through severe training and continual elimination. He grew up without parental affection, and his childhood was defined by controlled education rather than ordinary play or social bonds. During a visit to the facility, a young Sakayanagi Arisu challenged him to chess; Ayanokoji defeated her in under ten minutes and dismissed a rematch as pointless. 172 173

He escaped the White Room and enrolled at the school despite not originally being on its admission list. Director Sakayanagi admitted him at Arisu's request and placed him in Class D. When Ayanokoji's father arrived to force his withdrawal, Ayanokoji refused, correctly deducing that his father could not use overt coercion within the school's jurisdiction. 97 98

At school, Ayanokoji initially maintained the image of an isolated, unremarkable Class D student. His unusual physical, academic, and strategic abilities gradually drew the attention of Horikita, Ryuuen, Sakayanagi, Matsushita, Kouenji, and White Room-affiliated opponents. 2 148 169 174

Appearance

Ayanokoji is a 173 cm student repeatedly regarded as handsome by his peers and by Sato's mother. 30 169 405

  • Slightly taller than Kakeru Ryuuen, who is 170 cm. 30
  • Usually maintains an unreadable, expressionless face. 25 97
  • His inconspicuous presentation supports his effort to pass as an ordinary student. 169 171

Personality

Ayanokoji is reserved, analytical, and deliberately detached. He prefers to avoid attention, downplays his capabilities, and treats many interactions as calculations of value, risk, and leverage. He can remain calm while under suspicion, physical threat, or pressure from his father. 48 97 171

Despite his utilitarian tendencies, he can recognize others' weaknesses and act to resolve them. He calmed Sudo during the Sports Festival, helped Hirata recover from an emotional collapse, and offered Nanase a way to remain at school after learning the truth behind her hostility. 80 134 222

His methods can be coercive. He recorded Karuizawa's bullying, assaulted and threatened her, and used the resulting fear to control her testimony against him. 46 48

Abilities & Skills

Strategic Analysis and Deception

Ayanokoji quickly identifies hidden structures in exams and social conflicts while concealing the extent of his involvement.

  • Investigated the other classes during the first Uninhabited Island Exam and confirmed the leaders of Classes A and B. 28
  • Manipulated the Command Tower Exam lottery to secure a direct confrontation with Sakayanagi. 129
  • Prepared evidence and false implications against potential class traitors to protect himself during an expulsion vote. 345
  • Recognized Tsukishiro's game as an attempt to expose his White Room connections. 160
  • Notices when others, including Matsushita and Ryuuen, are probing his hidden abilities. 169 171 425

Combat

Ayanokoji possesses exceptional hand-to-hand combat ability and adapts quickly to weapons and multiple opponents.

  • Defeated Ibuki and recovered Horikita's Magnetic Card after allowing Ibuki to expose herself. 32
  • Disarmed Ryuuen's attempt to gather evidence against him and fought him over their phones. 47 48
  • Defeated a first-year ambush group and Housen despite suffering an injury from Housen's knuckle duster. 227
  • Escaped Tsukishiro and two hired professionals after being outnumbered; he later returned with Kiryuuin to confront them. 233
  • Uses force selectively when surveillance, school rules, or strategic consequences make direct retaliation risky. 127

Limits

  • Ryuuen exploited a brief opening to strike Ayanokoji's knee, diminishing his combat ability during their confrontation. 48
  • Housen's knuckle duster injury worsened the damage Ayanokoji later sustained against Tsukishiro's group. 227 234

Academic Ability and Chess

Ayanokoji's academic ability is far beyond the performance he initially presents.

  • Earned the only perfect score on a math exam; Sakayanagi, the second-place student, scored 91. 194
  • Replaced Hirata in the decisive Command Tower chess match and defeated Sakayanagi, securing Class D's victory. 136
  • Defeated Sakayanagi at chess as a child, establishing the rivalry that later continued at school. 173

Athletic Ability

Ayanokoji is an elite runner with unusually high physical control and rapid skill acquisition.

  • Finished the Sports Festival relay 0.21 seconds behind Ryuuen; accounting for the starting-time difference, he would have won. 81
  • Revealed his speed and grip strength while pursuing Kouenji during an 18-kilometer running test. 148
  • Quickly learned skiing fundamentals and recognized Ryuuen's advanced technique during their school trip. 420

Psychological Manipulation and Persuasion

Ayanokoji can pressure, redirect, or stabilize people according to their vulnerabilities.

  • Used Sudo's desire for recognition and feelings for Horikita to return him to the Sports Festival. 80
  • Pulled Hirata out of his emotional crisis and enabled his return to Class D. 134
  • Coerced Karuizawa through recorded evidence and fear of retaliation. 46 48
  • Saw through Nanase's false dissociative-identity act, then recruited her to oppose his father rather than treating her as an enemy. 221 222

  • Nanase Tsubasa — Initially attacks him over misplaced resentment, then accepts his offer to remain at school and cooperate against his father. 221 222
  • Kiryuuin Fuuka — Ally during Tsukishiro's attempted abduction; she returns with Ayanokoji to turn the confrontation into a two-on-three fight. 233
  • Sato Maya — Confessed to Ayanokoji and later became his girlfriend after he used a confession to give her an escape from the class vote. He ultimately chooses to maintain the relationship. 170 338 481
