Appearance
Zhunti is frequently presented in tattered or ragged clothing, using poverty and humility as part of his public image. When acting openly as a Sage, he is surrounded by Buddhist radiance and golden lotuses. 57 147
- Often adopts a mournful, bitter, or hypocritically apologetic expression to gain sympathy. 6
- His Sage manifestation is marked by glazed treasure-light skin and Buddhist light. 147
- Lost an arm to Tongtian’s Green Duckweed Sword at Zixiao Palace; Tongtian later returned and restored it. 91 94
Personality
Zhunti is calculating, opportunistic, and remarkably willing to sacrifice dignity for the Western Sect’s interests. At Zixiao Palace, he used self-pity, insult, and a staged collision to obtain a prayer cushion; later, he repeatedly pursued Human Race fortune, Heavenly Court offices, sectarian influence, and rare treasures through similar methods. 6 57 77 147
His courage is selective. Zhunti readily pressures weaker opponents, manipulates mortals, and exploits chaos, but immediately prioritizes escape when he believes Tongtian may be present. His flight during the ambush on Zhao Gongming and Yunxiao left both Western and Chan Sect disciples behind. 97 98 133
Despite this self-preservation, Zhunti is deeply committed to the West. The loss of the Eight-Treasure Merit Pool’s accumulated merit devastated him, and his resentment at weakness later made him vulnerable to demonic influence. 134 138
Abilities & Skills
Sage Power
Zhunti possesses Sage-level cultivation and can manifest overwhelming Buddhist light, wield immense dharma power, and contend directly with other top-tier cultivators.
- Formed a massive spiritual-energy hand inside Lu Chen’s devouring black hole to contest him directly. 148
- Intervened in the battle for the Human Sovereign, breaking Laozi’s suppression and sending Guangchengzi flying. 84
- Was strong enough to act openly while other Sages were restricted during the Investiture conflict. 147
Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree
Zhunti’s principal treasure is the Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree.
- Used it against Tongtian, though Tongtian’s sword qi damaged its precious radiance. 18
- Attempted to use it against Lu Chen after trying to seize the Heaven-Devouring Treasure Vase. 147
- Was forced into a prolonged struggle after Lu Chen’s Devouring Dao trapped the tree within a devouring black hole. 148
Disguise and Infiltration
Zhunti conceals his identity to influence factions that would reject him openly.
- Lived among the Lieshan Tribe as Daoist Youde or the Virtuous Daoist, subtly spreading Western teachings among humans. 77 78
- Used the identity of Daoist Youlian while participating in the scheme against Yao Ji. 95 97
- His Human Race infiltration was discovered when Lu Chen sensed Human Race fortune drifting toward the West. 77 78
Manipulation and Political Scheming
Zhunti is adept at exploiting grievances, public appearances, and other people’s ambition.
- Manipulated Hong Yun’s generosity and stole Kunpeng’s prayer cushion through a staged accident. 6
- Attempted to exploit Haotian’s affection for Yao Ji through a manufactured rescue and false narrative. 95 97
- Turned the pure-blooded Black Jade Qilin into the Western Sect guardian Mo Yu and assigned him to guard the Eight-Treasure Merit Pool. 140
- Accepted Shen Gongbao’s proposal to draw the Chan Sect, Dao Sect, and Western Sect into a joint confrontation with the Jie Sect. 145
Equipment & Assets
- Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree — Zhunti’s primary treasure and weapon; later trapped by Lu Chen’s Devouring Dao. 18 147 148
- Eight-Treasure Merit Pool — A major Western Sect resource. Its merit was used to cleanse Guangchengzi’s karmic sin, consuming roughly forty percent of its reserves. 133 134
- Mo Yu — The renamed Black Jade Qilin, mentally altered into a devout Western Sect guardian for the damaged Merit Pool. 140
Relationships
- Jieyin — Senior brother and fellow Western Sect Sage. Jieyin often restrains Zhunti’s impulsiveness, negotiates compensation for his actions, and supports his Western Sect ambitions. 61 134 140
- Tongtian — Persistent adversary. Tongtian repeatedly humiliated Zhunti, damaged his treasure, severed his Dao Corpse, cut off his arm, and terrified him into retreat on several occasions. 18 19 91 98
- Lu Chen — Major opponent. Lu Chen exposed Zhunti’s Human Race infiltration, rejected his political overtures, and later fought him after Zhunti attempted to seize the Heaven-Devouring Treasure Vase. 36 77 147 148
- Haotian — Target of Zhunti’s resentment after Haotian refused to grant Western Sect disciples Heavenly Court offices. Zhunti later plotted to exploit Yao Ji, Haotian’s sister. 57 58 95
- Yuanshi — Uneasy collaborator. Zhunti cooperated with Yuanshi against the Jie Sect, but their relationship deteriorated after Zhunti abandoned Chan Sect disciples during the Chentang Pass ambush. 132 133
- Shen Gongbao — Secret collaborator during the Xiqi conflict. Zhunti approved Shen’s plan to entangle the Three Religions and promised to accept him as a personal disciple if it succeeded. 144 145
- Xuanyuan — Temporary beneficiary of Zhunti’s intervention. Zhunti prevented Laozi and Guangchengzi from rescuing Xuandu, allowing Xuanyuan to secure victory at Zhuolu. 84
Story Role / Major Arcs
Zixiao Palace and the Prayer Cushions
Zhunti and Jieyin arrived late to Hongjun’s lecture and portrayed themselves as impoverished outsiders without seats. Zhunti secured a cushion for Jieyin after Hong Yun yielded his place, then insulted Kunpeng and faked a stumble to take Kunpeng’s cushion for himself. Hongjun declared the seating fixed before Kunpeng could retaliate. 6 7
Sagehood and Conflict with Tongtian
After becoming a Sage, Zhunti’s hostility toward Tongtian intensified. He and Jieyin fought Tongtian together, but Tongtian damaged the Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree and severed one Dao Corpse from each of them. 18 19
During the Witch–Demon war, Zhunti and Jieyin attempted to abduct witches and demons for the West. The Pangu Phantom injured Zhunti, while Tongtian forced Jieyin to release the captives. 39
Zhunti later suggested that the Jie Sect should provide candidates for the Investiture List. Tongtian answered by cutting off his arm in Zixiao Palace, after which Zhunti publicly pretended the attack was merely friendly jest rather than risk further retaliation. 91
Struggle for Human Race Fortune
Zhunti secretly preached among the Lieshan Tribe as Daoist Youde, planting Western doctrine and drawing a portion of Human Race fortune westward. Lu Chen detected the scheme but chose not to expel him, provided no outside lineage monopolized humanity’s fortune. 77 78
At Zhuolu, Zhunti interfered with Laozi’s attempt to save Xuandu, enabling Xuanyuan to kill his rival and become the third Human Sovereign. Xuanyuan later allowed Western teachings to spread for one hundred years as repayment, but refused to recognize the Western Sect as humanity’s official religion. 84 85
Schemes Against the Heavenly Court
After Haotian denied Western Sect disciples official posts, Zhunti began seeking revenge. He investigated Haotian’s relationship with Yao Ji and engineered the Three-Headed Evil Flood Dragon’s pursuit of her, intending to create a staged rescue that would give the West influence over the Heavenly Court. 57 95 97
The plan collapsed when Six Ears arrived. Fearing Tongtian’s involvement and the Green Duckweed Sword, Zhunti abandoned both the scheme and his disciple rather than confront Six Ears. 97 98
Investiture Conflict and Demonic Influence
Zhunti participated in the ambush on Zhao Gongming and Yunxiao, but fled when he mistook an imitation of Tongtian’s voice and sword intent for Tongtian himself. His abandonment led to the deaths of Sunlight, Moonlight, Wenshu, Cihang, Puxian, and Juliusun. 133
The Western Sect later surrendered the Eight-Treasure Merit Pool’s resources to restore Guangchengzi. Zhunti’s grief over the pool’s loss and his hatred of weakness opened him to a mysterious voice; demonic qi from Luohou subsequently entered his body through Spirit Mountain’s veins. 134 138
Xiqi and the Four Religions’ Plot
Zhunti created a Black Jade Qilin omen to legitimize Xiqi’s rebellion, but Kong Xuan shattered the manifestation from afar. Zhunti seized the wounded qilin and transformed it into the Western Sect guardian Mo Yu. 139 140
He later accepted Shen Gongbao’s proposal to gather the Three Religions against the Jie Sect, judging that even failure would leave him the option of retreating with the Western Sect disciples. 145
Battle with Lu Chen
Zhunti entered the battlefield after the Heaven-Devouring Treasure Vase appeared, intending to claim the Primordial Supreme Treasure for the West. The vase devoured part of his hand and disrupted several Sage treasures before Zhunti directly challenged Lu Chen. 147
Lu Chen used the Heaven-Devouring Treasure Vase and Devouring Dao to trap the Seven-Treasure Wondrous Tree in a black hole. Zhunti focused on recovering his treasure even as Duobao and the Jie Sect captured Maitreya, Medicine Master, Guangchengzi, Xuandu, and other opposing cultivators. 148
Notable Quotes
