Background

Su Yao is the daughter of a peak third-tier Snow Shadow Spirit Fox Yao who lives deep in the Cloudmist Mountain Range. Her mother entered seclusion to overcome a bottleneck and placed restrictions around their cave to keep Su Yao from leaving; after three years, Su Yao found a damaged section and slipped into the human world out of boredom and curiosity. 14

For her first month outside the mountain range, Su Yao concealed herself and observed human settlements from the shadows, mindful of her mother's warnings about the Demon Subduing Division and its anti-Yao tools. Near Creek Stone Village, she encountered Lin Xiu'er's vengeful spirit. Her bloodline instinct led her to refine the residual malicious essence from the innards of wicked people, an act her clan considers a sinless means of cultivation; this contributed to the village's Yao incidents. 14

She met Wang Lang after his Grand Righteous Qi disrupted and suppressed her demon power. Once he learned her name, she began trusting him and returned with him to Listening Waves Mountain Manor. 12 After the dangers of Golden Light Temple, Su Yao admitted that she regretted leaving home and asked to remain with Wang Lang until her mother could find her through their bloodline connection. 18

Su Yao later cultivated beside the Dadu River, copying Wang Lang's extreme training method. Though it visibly made her fox form more muscular, it pushed her from late First Tier to its peak. 21 She subsequently entered seclusion, broke through to Second Tier, and gained the ability to transform into a partly human form. 54

While Wang Lang cultivated in seclusion, Su Yao independently targeted evildoers. Her most consequential act was destroying Jingchen Temple in Mojian City after uncovering its usury, forced labor, human trafficking, and child-based pill refinement. She killed Abbot Jingchen and the temple's corrupt monks, burned the temple, seized its wealth, and distributed the proceeds to poor residents. 87 88 89 90 She later continued eliminating oppressive landlords, bandits, and child traffickers, though she became frustrated by the endless recurrence of evil. 95

Su Yao ultimately left Listening Waves Mountain Manor alongside Wang Lang on his journey toward Central Province and Yong Province. 94 96

In her usual form, Su Yao is a small, snow-white fox. After reaching Second Tier, she can transform into a young woman while retaining traits of her original form; complete human transformation requires Third Tier. 54
