Chapter Thirty-Nine

After the guards at the entrance verified his name and identity, they respectfully invited Ye Nanxun to get out and transfer to the special car prepared by the He Household. The car then took guests invited to He Lanxue's birthday banquet to the banquet hall.

Lush trees lined both sides of the road, while precious flowers bloomed in abundance.

The air carried a faint, refreshing warmth, without a trace of the biting chill from outside.

Ye Nanxun glanced up through the car window and could vaguely make out a pale blue light screen enveloping the entire He Household.

Even the enormous Dream Star Imperial Palace only activated its light screen on special occasions, such as the New Year's Eve banquet a few days ago, to keep the central palace square pleasantly warm.

Yet the He Household kept its light screen activated every day, all year round.

After getting out of the car, Ye Nanxun took off his long coat and black-and-gray cashmere scarf.

He wore mid-calf boots today. His black fitted bootcut pants outlined his long, straight legs and slim waist and hips, while his upper body was clad in a silk shirt with jeweled buttons, shimmering with flowing color—romantic and refined.

Compared with the other guests invited today, Ye Nanxun's family background and status were utterly unremarkable. Yet as soon as the young, beautiful omega with his elegant, noble bearing stood at the entrance to the banquet hall, most people cast curious glances his way.

"Brother Nan Xun!"

A fiery red figure raced closer, like a dancing fire butterfly flying down the steps. He Lanxue rushed before Ye Nanxun, her bright, captivating face filled with delight.

Ye Nanxun smiled faintly and handed her the exquisite bag he carried in his other hand. "Happy birthday."

"Thank you, Brother Nan Xun."

He Lanxue personally led Ye Nanxun into the banquet hall, winding through several corridors until they reached one of the rooms on the second floor.

Quite a few guests had already gathered in the banquet hall downstairs. At a glance, there were barely any young people their age; that was the social venue for the older generation of the He Household.

The spacious, brightly lit room upstairs was a completely different world. The young, eye-catching faces were lively and vibrant, and everyone in the room He Lanxue had brought Ye Nanxun to was an omega.

Not long after He Lanxue came upstairs, her father called her back down.

Worried that Ye Nanxun would be bored here because of his introverted personality, He Lanxue specifically asked several of her closest friends to take care of him before she left.

They said birds of a feather flocked together, and that was indeed true.

He Lanxue was straightforward and lively. Though the personalities of her close friends varied, one could still feel their sincerity and warmth among them.

Ye Nanxun had initially worried that he would seem unsociable because he did not talk much. Fortunately, several of He Lanxue's friends were good conversationalists. As they chatted, they occasionally steered the topic toward Ye Nanxun, never making him feel left out.

"Are all the people in this room omegas?" Holding a glass of juice, Ye Nanxun asked seemingly casually.

"Yeah, everyone in this room is an omega. We can relax and have fun. Those alphas are in the room at the end of the corridor," one person said, then deliberately lowered his voice to warn him, "Lan Xue's brothers are all over there. Don't go there no matter what. They play pretty wildly."

Ye Nanxun acknowledged it and lowered his head to take a sip of juice.

The phone in his pocket began to buzz. Ye Nanxun used it as an excuse to stand. "Sorry, I need to step out and take a call."

The caller ID displayed Ye Zhineng's name.

As Ye Nanxun pushed open the door and left the room, he answered the call. "Hello."

"I'm here, Nanxun."

The voice came simultaneously from the receiver and from his right.

Ye Zhineng walked over from not far away with a smile. The alpha's gaze settled on Ye Nanxun, faint lights glimmering in his eyes.

"You look pretty good in that outfit," Ye Zhineng said as he reached Ye Nanxun. "Very handsome."

"Cousin." Ye Nanxun lowered his head to look at his clothes. "Lan Xue comes from such an influential family. I was worried about disgracing the family by attending her birthday banquet, so I put more thought into my attire."

At that, Ye Zhineng gave an inscrutable smile.

These wealthy and powerful people would not think more highly of someone just because they dressed nicely.

His little cousin's thoughts were still too simple.

Remembering how he had sent Ye Nanxun invitations several times recently, only for Ye Nanxun to repeatedly refuse on the grounds that he was busy, Ye Zhineng's voice carried a hint of displeasure.

"Nanxun, do you have some issue with me?"

"No. Why would you say that, Cousin?"

"I messaged you yesterday. Why didn't you reply?"

Ye Nanxun paused, his apologetic attitude utterly sincere. "Sorry, I've been genuinely busy these past few days. I meant to reply, but I got interrupted and accidentally forgot."

He truly had been busy.

And he truly had not wanted to reply.

As for whether Ye Zhineng believed his excuse, Ye Nanxun did not care much.

Ye Zhineng frowned slightly and clicked his tongue. "What could you possibly be busy with?"

His offhand words were laced with undisguised contempt. Ye Zhineng had investigated Ye Nanxun's background. His cousin had been eccentric in the past and disliked going out; he had not even attended school.

He stayed home all day, did not attend school, and had no job.

Drinking tea and playing the piano—what could he possibly be busy with?

"Conducting experiments," Ye Nanxun replied.

If they were being serious, Ye Zhineng was the one with nothing to do.

The Ye Household's businesses were not on Dream Star. Ye Zhineng wanted to develop a career on Dream Star, but had no one to show him the way.

The young masters he knew were happy to bring him along for fun, but whenever the conversation turned to business and money, they disdained sharing their resources with someone from another planet.

Ye Zhineng froze for a moment, badly wanting to ask: What experiments?

The question rolled around in his throat, but before he could voice it, Ye Nanxun had already strode past him and called out toward the front.

"Cao Xi?"

Ye Zhineng followed Ye Nanxun's gaze. A thin, pale omega stood at the doorway of a room at the corridor entrance. At the sound of Ye Nanxun's voice, his entire body trembled.

"Professor Ye?"

Startled by someone suddenly calling his name, the already extremely tense Cao Xi jumped. When he turned and saw Ye Nanxun, surprise appeared in his clear eyes.

Ye Nanxun had already walked over first. "Cao Xi, are you here for Lan Xue's birthday banquet too?"

Ye Zhineng followed him over, his gaze lightly sweeping over the frail omega. He remembered that this omega named Cao Xi had been brought by Jiang Ying to entertain everyone later.

A very clean S-rank omega who had not yet been used.

Rather than tear him apart and enjoy him right away, watching the omega panic, grow anxious and afraid under teasing eyes was another kind of pleasure.

"I..." Cao Xi stammered. He secretly glanced at the alpha behind Ye Nanxun, but after stuttering for a long while, he could not get out a single complete word.

"Xiao Xi came with me. His studies at school are demanding, so I brought him out to get some fresh air."

Jiang Ying pushed open the door and stepped out, standing behind Cao Xi. The refined, courteous alpha greeted Ye Nanxun politely. "Professor Ye."
