Background / History

Ye Zhineng is the eldest legitimate son of the wealthy Ye Household’s main branch. Before arriving on Dream Star, he was accustomed to privilege and admiration; Dream Star’s more powerful families instead make him conscious of his comparatively limited status and influence 14.

In Ye Nanxun’s previous life, Ye Zhineng was one of Xu Wenyan’s devoted supporters. After visiting the Ye family and discovering Nanxun, he repeatedly used Nanxun to provoke Xu, eventually kidnapping him to curry favor with Xu Wenyan. After Nanxun’s death, Ye Zhineng planned to seize the Ye family’s assets for himself and Xu 11 14.

In the new timeline, Ye Zhineng accompanies Xu Wenyan among Dream Star’s elite but is humiliated when Xu leaves him for He Yiming. Learning that Ye Nanxun is his cousin immediately transforms his social position: nobles who had previously disregarded him begin seeking his friendship in hopes of gaining access to Nanxun 10.

He visits the Ye family to meet Nanxun, presenting himself as an attentive cousin while privately assessing Nanxun’s beauty, musical talent, and connections as opportunities to enter Dream Star’s highest social circles 13 14. He later arranges for William to approach Nanxun at an art exhibition, attempting to use his cousin as a bridge for business and social advancement 24 40.

At He Lanxue’s birthday banquet, Ye Zhineng’s behavior becomes more conflicted. He shields Nanxun from Jiang Ying and Zhu Shixin, cautions him against accepting strangers’ drinks, and grows uneasy after leaving him with William to pursue their business arrangement 40. However, when Nanxun is later harassed by several alphas and pushed into a pool, Ye Zhineng is too intimidated by He Yiming to intervene despite wanting to help 53.

After Nanxun cuts off contact, Ye Zhineng becomes increasingly preoccupied with regaining his attention. His guilt, wounded pride, and possessiveness lead him to pursue Nanxun in public, retaliate against mall security personnel who humiliated him, and eventually attempt to force a reconciliation at the Scientific Research Institute 53 97. Yan Beiyou violently stops this final confrontation, leaving Ye Zhineng severely injured and triggering the exposure of his broader criminal activities and his family’s abuses of influence 98 101 118.

He even derives a distorted sense of pride from being connected to Xu and Dream Star’s elite alphas 14.

He is opportunistic in his treatment of Ye Nanxun. Once he realizes how much social value his cousin possesses, he uses their family connection to attract noble acquaintances, probes Nanxun for useful information, and introduces him to William without properly considering Nanxun’s wishes 10 14 24.

Despite these motives, Ye Zhineng gradually shows genuine protective impulses toward Nanxun. His warnings about Jiang Ying and strangers’ drinks, as well as his intervention against Zhu Shixin, conflict with his earlier willingness to exploit Nanxun for personal gain 40. Those impulses remain unreliable: he fails to save Nanxun from the later pool incident because he fears He Yiming’s power, then allows guilt to become possessive fixation rather than accepting responsibility for his inaction 53.

When rejected, Ye Zhineng’s polished façade quickly collapses into impatience, coercion, and entitlement. He believes money, gifts, family pressure, and personal apologies should be sufficient to purchase Nanxun’s forgiveness, and attempts to seize Nanxun’s phone when these methods fail 97. His humiliation by mall security and subsequent loss of status further intensify his vindictiveness 53 97.

Although he later witnesses Nanxun being harassed by alphas and pushed into the pool, Ye Zhineng does not intervene after He Yiming’s threatening look reminds him of the limits of his influence on Dream Star 53.

Estrangement

Nanxun increasingly ignores Ye Zhineng’s invitations and messages, maintaining a polite but deliberate emotional distance. By Chapter 49, Ye Zhineng’s apologetic messages remain unanswered 38 49.

Following the birthday-banquet incident, Nanxun blocks Ye Zhineng’s messages, refuses his calls, and denies him access to the family estate. Ye Zhineng’s guilt over abandoning Nanxun is inseparable from his wounded pride and growing need to regain control of their relationship 53 97.

Downfall and Punishment

After being removed from a mall by security, Ye Zhineng hires someone to assault a security guard in retaliation. The resulting police investigation exposes additional crimes connected to Ye Zhineng and the Ye Household, causing his Dream Star associates to abandon him 97 118.

He later confronts Nanxun at the Scientific Research Institute, offering gifts, money, vehicles, jewelry, and family mediation in exchange for forgiveness. When Nanxun refuses and begins calling security, Ye Zhineng attempts to seize his phone; Yan Beiyou intervenes and inflicts severe injuries on him 97 98.

While hospitalized with nearly every bone in his body broken, Ye Zhineng learns that the authorities intend to investigate and seize Ye Household assets on Muli Star, imprison those involved, and send him to the interstellar battlefield once he recovers 101 118.
