Background / History

The disappearance of the Third Kazekage creates a political crisis within Hidden Sand. Its leadership suspects another village is responsible and dispatches spies to investigate; Konoha later learns that Sand is preparing to use the disappearance as a pretext for war. 3 4 6

Hidden Sand enters the conflict burdened by reduced funding from the Land of Wind daimyo, financial hardship, internal unrest, and accumulated resentment from earlier wars. Its leaders view an external war as a means to obtain resources, unify dissatisfied ninja, and redirect domestic tensions. 9 10

The village has also suffered personal losses during the Second Shinobi World War, including Chiyo's son and daughter-in-law. These losses help fuel its campaign against Konoha. 8

Strategy and Tactics

Opening Offensive

Hidden Sand begins its invasion with simultaneous surprise attacks on Konoha outposts in the Land of Rivers and the Land of Rain. Its initial deployment consists of roughly 6,000 elite troops: Rasa's 4,000-man northern main force, plus Maki's and Yekura's 1,000-man diversionary forces. 8

The attacks are intended to overwhelm border defenses, divide Konoha's response, and conceal the main advance toward the Land of Fire. Rock Turtle Pass is assaulted by puppet forces using toxic smoke, while Pakura's troops devastate two Konoha outposts bordering the Land of Rain. 9 10

Puppet and Poison Warfare

Hidden Sand combines puppet formations with poison needles, toxic mist, concealed blades, binding chains, and armored scorpion puppets. These weapons can cripple Konoha formations by obstructing vision, causing paralysis, and disrupting hand seals. 21 22 33

Puppets are specifically deployed against Uchiha Lan because they cannot be placed under genjutsu. Lan counters this advantage by using the Sharingan to identify chakra threads and hunt the puppeteers controlling them. 21 22

Wind Release Formations

Sand shinobi frequently employ coordinated Wind Release to suppress opponents, destroy fortifications, and cover troop movements. Their combined attacks can breach Konoha's Earth Release defensive lines at Mount Kikyo. 20 33

Maki personally uses wind blades during the border offensive and later attacks Orochimaru from behind the main battle line. 8 22

Political Deception

After Hidden Sand's advance stalls at Mount Kikyo, Chiyo abandons Rasa's proposal for a costly all-out breakthrough. She instead orders a deception campaign meant to convince Iwagakure that Konoha's main forces are trapped, weakened, and exposed. 29

The operation, codenamed Eye of the Sandstorm, combines falsified Sand Bee intelligence with Yekura's genuine withdrawal from the Land of Rain. The apparent abandonment of that front is intended to lure Onoki into attacking Konoha. 30
