Ch. 21White Queen's Submission
Summary of “White Queen’s Submission”
Plot Points and Events
- Xu Mo decides to intervene when he sees White Queen, or Emma, being overwhelmed by Sentinel Robots in a forest clearing.
- Although Emma uses her Diamond Form to withstand their attacks, the robots have copied the same ability and are far larger and stronger. She is eventually knocked helpless and expects to die.
- Xu Mo arrives at the last moment, catches a robot’s weapon with one hand, destroys two Diamond-form Sentinels by crushing them together, and rapidly destroys the remaining robots.
- Emma is injured and falls when she leaves Diamond Form. Xu Mo carries her to a villa in Brooklyn, where he removes the bullet from her shoulder and treats the wound.
- During their conversation, Emma realizes Xu Mo already knows who she is. He admits that he saved her because she is useful to him, not out of pure altruism.
- Emma responds flirtatiously, testing what kind of “use” Xu Mo has in mind. She ultimately agrees to remain at his villa and accept his protection.
- Xu Mo leaves after ordering her to recover. Emma watches him depart and reflects on how extraordinary and frightening his abilities are.
- While flying away, Xu Mo considers Emma’s history: she had been hunted by Bolivar Trask’s Mutant research company and forced into hiding after discovering that she could not defeat their Sentinel Robots.
Character Developments
- Xu Mo: Demonstrates overwhelming physical strength, combat skill, flight, and powerful psychic or telekinetic abilities. He is pragmatic and openly transactional, saving Emma because he sees strategic value in her. His inability to be detected by Emma’s Telepathy suggests an especially formidable or unusual power.
- White Queen/Emma: Begins the chapter confident in her Diamond Form but is reduced to helplessness by the Sentinels. Her near-death experience makes her recognize Xu Mo’s superiority. She becomes more pragmatic, accepting his protection and submitting to an alliance rather than continuing to evade the robots alone.
- Emma also remains composed and seductive despite her injuries, using flirtation to assess Xu Mo’s intentions and maintain some control over the situation.
Significant Themes
- Power and vulnerability: Emma’s normally formidable abilities are rendered useless against the Sentinels, emphasizing the difference between personal power and technological adaptation.
- Protection and dependence: Xu Mo’s intervention saves Emma, but his help comes with implied expectations, creating a relationship based on unequal power and mutual utility.
- Pragmatism and survival: Emma chooses submission because continued independence would likely lead to capture and experimentation.
- Mystery and exceptional ability: Xu Mo’s immunity to Emma’s Telepathy makes him more enigmatic and potentially more dangerous than even Professor X.
Character Interactions
- Xu Mo rescues Emma physically and later treats her wound, establishing himself as both protector and authority figure.
- Emma thanks him but quickly challenges his motives, noticing that he already knows her identity.
- Their conversation becomes flirtatious when Emma asks what kind of “use” she might have to him, suggesting future personal and strategic entanglement.
- Emma’s inability to sense Xu Mo mentally contrasts with his apparent ability to observe and understand her, reinforcing the imbalance between them.
