Background
Hina came from a commoner background and entered the Marines after obtaining her Devil Fruit. Her career advanced through promotion to ensign, captaincy, and graduation from the Marine Elite Officer Training Academy before she became a Headquarters major and commander of Base 36 on Glass Island. She had held the command for only two months when Yang Yunzhi selected her as the superior he wished to serve under. 3 8
Before Yang’s arrival, Hina had begun purging Base 36 of lazy, criminal, and pirate-connected Marines, including personnel involved in weapons sales. The cleanup left the base severely understaffed, forcing her to begin a new recruitment campaign. 6
She initially recruited Yang under the alias “Rick” for clerical work because his literacy and reasoning were exceptionally valuable despite his poor physical showing in the enlistment assessment. His administrative ability, recruitment proposal, and political analysis gradually made him her confidant, adjutant, and closest adviser. 5 6 11 12
Appearance
Hina is a tall, striking Marine officer with pink hair, described as nearly 1.9 meters tall and possessing a heroic, imposing presence. 4
- Pink hair and a serious, disciplined expression. 3 4
- Tall, athletic build suited to Marine training. 4 27
- Fair complexion that becomes notably smoother after practicing the Great Yin-Yang Art with Yang. 27 28
- Usually wears a Marine uniform; during Gion’s visit, she led Base 36’s troops in formal command attire. 28
Personality
Hina is disciplined, forthright, and demanding without being needlessly harsh. She personally trains recruits, teaches them about piracy and geography, and refuses to simply shift responsibility when problems arise. 8
She values integrity and competence. Her reform of Base 36 targeted corruption and negligence, while her willingness to make Yang an aide, intelligence deputy, and adjutant reflects her readiness to recognize talent regardless of rank. 6 12 23
Although initially loyal to the Marines as an institution, Hina’s discussions with Yang lead her to distinguish justice from obedience to the World Government. She concludes that resisting oppressive nobles may be necessary to uphold justice, an ideological breakthrough that coincides with her awakening of Conqueror’s Haki. 17
In private, Hina is affectionate, direct, and possessive toward Yang. She becomes openly jealous of Robin’s presence and insists that Yang return regularly while establishing his intelligence network. 27 30 42
Abilities & Skills
Cage-Cage Fruit
Hina possesses the Cage-Cage Fruit, which she has primarily used by creating partial cage structures or prison walls to restrain and strike opponents. 25
- Creates cage-like barriers and restraining structures. 25
- Had previously focused on individual cage walls rather than complete prisons. 25
- Yang identifies its potential as a large-scale control ability centered on sealing and isolation rather than direct offense. 25
- Her proposed development path includes prisons that could suppress Devil Fruit powers, Haki, weapon skills, and other combat methods; this remains a training goal rather than a confirmed achieved ability. 25
Conqueror’s Haki
Hina awakens Conqueror’s Haki after accepting that justice may require opposition to the World Government. 17
- Her awakening reflects an independent will to resist oppression and change the world. 17
- She and Yang conceal the awakening by claiming an unidentified powerful individual released the Haki near Base 36. 17
- The secrecy is intended to prevent the World Government from viewing her as a dangerous, politically independent Marine. 17
Marine Command and Training
Hina leads Base 36 directly rather than relying solely on rank. 8
- Personally trains recruits in running, hand-to-hand combat, movement techniques, and swordsmanship. 8
- Educates subordinates on geography, pirate threats, and combat experience. 8
- Purged corrupt personnel and rebuilt the undermanned base through recruitment and training. 6
- Oversees Base 36’s increasingly disciplined force while delegating routine training to instructors so she can improve her own strength. 30 42
Institutional Leadership
Hina supports structural reforms that make Base 36 less dependent on any single commander. 12
- Established the Military Law Office, serving as its director while recruiting military police to investigate violations and maintain discipline. 12
- Established the Intelligence Office and appointed herself director, with Yang as deputy director. 12
- Entrusted Yang with recruitment, finances, logistics, and adjutant responsibilities after recognizing his ability. 23 25
- Leads Base 36 as it adopts formal unit structures, combat conferences, coordinated planning, and intelligence-led pirate operations. 45 46
Equipment / Items
- Den Den Mushi — Kept in her office and used to contact West Blue Weekly, Tsuru, and Gion. 7 9 19
- Devil Fruit Compendium — A Marine-issued reference used to identify the Link-Link, Cloud-Cloud, and Door-Door Fruits. 18 28
Relationships
- Yang Yunzhi / “Rick” — Initially her literate clerk, then her confidant, adjutant, ideological partner, and lover. Hina trusts his judgment, supports his reforms, and shares his long-term goal of opposing the World Government’s injustice. 5 11 12 27 30
- Tsuru — Her former teacher and a senior Marine mentor. Tsuru responds to Hina’s reports, praises Yang’s ability, and instructs Hina to value his advice. 8 9 25
- Gion — A close “sister” among the relatively few female Marines. Hina trusts Gion’s character enough to offer her the Cloud-Cloud Fruit and hopes to recruit her into their ideological camp. 18 19
- Little Bean — Yang’s AI companion and the communications foundation of the DD Party. Hina learns of Little Bean’s role in the group’s intelligence network. 20 42
- Nico Robin / “Rebecca” — A DD Party intelligence analyst whose arrival makes Hina jealous, though Hina accepts her operational value after Yang’s reassurance. 42
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rebuilding Marine Base 36
Hina’s command begins with a purge of corrupt Marines and a difficult recruitment effort. Yang’s newspaper advertisement helps bring in recruits, while Hina responds responsibly when its success threatens to overwhelm the available positions across West Blue. 6 8 9
Trusting Yang’s Reforms
Hina becomes Yang’s closest institutional ally after he proposes reforms to recruitment, military law, intelligence gathering, discipline, logistics, and anti-mafia governance. She provides the authority, funding, and protection needed to put many of those plans into practice. 10 12 23 25
Ideological Break and Haki Awakening
When Yang argues that merely strengthening the Marines could reinforce noble oppression, Hina reexamines her beliefs. Her realization that justice may require resisting the World Government triggers her Conqueror’s Haki awakening. 17
Relationship with Yang
Hina and Yang’s professional partnership turns romantic after she initiates an intimate encounter. Their relationship becomes known throughout Base 36, where the Marines broadly approve of the pairing. The Great Yin-Yang Art improves both of their vitality, recovery, senses, and appearance. 26 27
DD Party and Pirate Suppression
Hina joins Yang’s covert movement under the public cover of the DD Party. While Robin handles intelligence analysis, Hina prepares Base 36’s recruits for pirate-hunting operations that will advance her Marine career and strengthen their independent power base. 42
She later commands the Marine side of the Blood Knife Pirates operation, relying on Yang’s intelligence, coordinated battle planning, and Combat Command System. The raid ends with zero Marine deaths and eleven light injuries. 45 46 47
