Appearance

  • Features: Handsome, with a cold expression 131.
  • Military attire: Wears armor while defending Golden Rooster Ridge 131.
  • Daoist attire: Changes into a five-colored Daoist robe for the Eastern Sea treasure negotiations 141.
  • Divine light: Azure, yellow, red, black, and white radiance circulates behind him when his signature ability is active 131 139.

Personality

Kong Xuan is proud, blunt, and fiercely resistant to unwanted recruitment. After Medicine Master persists in discussing his supposed affinity with the Western Regions, Kong Xuan imprisons him. He later rejects Zhunti’s offers outright, including access to the Merit Golden Lotus and Eight Treasures Merit Pool 131 139.

He enjoys testing powerful opponents and treats repeated Elucidation Sect attacks with dry amusement. His taunts are usually brief: when asked to return captured treasures, he simply tells their owners to win them back. Despite collecting substantial spoils, he places little value on ordinary artifacts and freely offers Holy Mother Huo Ling a bronze mirror 135 137.

His confidence does not prevent him from keeping promises or accepting sound advice. He ends Lin Yuan’s trial after exactly three breaths, prepares an escape route when warned about a Saint, and retreats once his clash with Zhunti proves unwinnable. He subsequently requests a Life Lamp so that others can detect danger to him 132 138 139 141.

Abilities & Skills

Five-Colored Divine Light

Kong Xuan uses a complete Five Elements Great Dao to seize control of opposing laws, drawing affected cultivators and treasures into his divine light 132.

Color Element Demonstrated Applications
Cyan / Azure Wood Envelops Lin Yuan and presses upon his Primordial Spirit, body, and magical power 132.
Red Fire Suppresses a captured sword and burns through True Person Huang Long’s sword energy 135 137.
Yellow Earth Resonates with the Heaven-Flipping Seal and exposes the Immortal Binding Rope beneath the ground 136.
White Metal Grinds against sword energy and forms a blade that destroys a confinement formation flag 137.
Black Water Counters fire arts and works with White Metal to redirect the Yin-Yang Mirror’s attack 136 137.
  • Treasure capture: Seizes the Heaven-Flipping Seal, Yin-Yang Mirror, and Immortal Binding Rope directly from their owners’ attacks 136.
  • Cultivator confinement: Imprisons Medicine Master, continuously suppressing his Western Regions magical power 130.
  • Selective force: Uses only Cyan Divine Light for Lin Yuan’s trial; unleashing all five colors would have amounted to a genuine capture attempt 132.
  • Combined attack: Merges all five colors into one strike against Zhunti, with their mutual generation increasing its power 139.

Limits

  • The light must reach its target, and its use consumes Kong Xuan’s magical power 136 137.
  • Capturing a treasure does not immediately erase its owner’s imprint. The three major Elucidation Sect treasures remain suppressed rather than fully re-refined 141.
  • Daluo cultivators ordinarily suffer no immediate harm during brief confinement. Medicine Master’s worsening injuries result from tribulation aura exploiting the suppression 130 131.
  • Its full combined power cannot overcome Zhunti. The Saint counters it with the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree and forces Kong Xuan back seven steps 139.

Five Elements Cycle

His five elemental powers form a self-sustaining cycle, allowing him to defend even when a formation suppresses the surrounding elemental energy 137.

  • Neutralizes spells through appropriate generating and restraining relationships rather than attempting to capture every attack 136.
  • Compresses his divine light within a hundred zhang to withstand a coordinated assault 137.
  • Changes methods against similar attacks, demonstrating several ways to counter fire arts or sword energy 136.
  • Lin Yuan judges that disrupting the cycle would require overwhelming its elemental links simultaneously; an ordinary group assault is insufficient 137.

Five Elements Passage

Kong Xuan creates a retreat passage in Golden Rooster Ridge’s rear mountain before Zhunti arrives 138.

  • Opens it with his divine light after testing his strength against the Saint 139.
  • Closes the passage behind himself, escaping the immediate confrontation 139.
  • The passage is not untraceable: Zhunti can follow its residual energy, but abandons pursuit after Lin Yuan intervenes 140.

History

Medicine Master’s Capture

Kong Xuan guards Golden Rooster Ridge, an important Great Shang pass blocking West Qi’s advance. Medicine Master arrives bearing a Western Saint’s decree and attempts to recruit him. After warning the visitor to leave, Kong Xuan captures him with the Five-Colored Divine Light 130 131 135.

Lin Yuan arrives with Zhao Gongming and Holy Mother Huo Ling to secure Medicine Master’s release. He explains that tribulation aura is turning otherwise survivable confinement into a threat to Medicine Master’s true spirit. Kong Xuan, who has no mortal enmity with the captive, offers a test: Lin Yuan must withstand his divine light for three breaths 131.

Lin Yuan survives the Cyan Divine Light by using its wood laws to complete his own Five Qi cycle, even regaining enough control to take a step. Kong Xuan honors the agreement, releases Medicine Master, and invites Lin Yuan to return when he can withstand all five colors 132.

Battles with the Elucidation Sect

After Lin Yuan leaves, Kong Xuan repels three Elucidation Sect attacks and accumulates a row of captured treasures. A stronger force led by Guangchengzi and Chijingzi follows, but loses the Heaven-Flipping Seal, Yin-Yang Mirror, and Immortal Binding Rope 134 135 136.

The attackers then surround him with eight Jade Clarity Formation Flags. Kong Xuan sustains his own elemental cycle, breaks the northeastern flag with concentrated White Metal light, and escapes the enclosure. He captures further treasures before Guangchengzi orders a retreat 137.

Zhunti’s Recruitment Attempt

Lin Yuan detects deepening Western Regions karma around Kong Xuan and suspects that his complete Five Elements Great Dao has attracted Zhunti’s interest. Following Lin Yuan’s advice, Kong Xuan returns ordinary disciples’ treasures to reduce unnecessary entanglements and prepares a retreat passage 137 138.

Zhunti arrives personally, but Kong Xuan refuses recruitment and tests his divine light against the Saint. Individual colors fail, and his combined strike only makes Zhunti’s sleeve flutter while leaving Kong Xuan bleeding. Accepting Lin Yuan’s warning, he escapes through the prepared passage. Lin Yuan then prevents pursuit by warning that forced recruitment would bring Tongtian into the dispute 139 140.

Treasure Exchange and Life Lamp

Kong Xuan entrusts Lin Yuan with negotiating the return of the captured core treasures. He agrees to exchange them for high-grade formation materials supporting the Interception Sect, partly to repay Lin Yuan for shielding him from a Saint’s interference. Guangchengzi redeems the Heaven-Flipping Seal, after which negotiations begin for the other two treasures 141.

Kong Xuan also receives a separate Life Lamp connection to the sect’s warning array. It can report abnormalities in his soul fire or tribulation aura without linking him directly to the Interception Sect’s core fortune. When the array detects danger approaching Great Shang’s front lines, he departs with Lin Yuan and Zhao Gongming 143.

Equipment / Items

  • Life Lamp — Independently linked to the warning array so Golden Turtle Island can detect danger to him 141 143.
  • Heaven-Flipping Seal — Captured from Guangchengzi and subsequently returned for formation materials 136 141.
  • Yin-Yang Mirror — Captured from Chijingzi; offered for negotiated redemption 136 141.
  • Immortal Binding Rope — Captured from Juliusun after its underground approach fails; offered for negotiated redemption 136 141.
  • Other captured treasures — Includes swords, banners, bells, mirrors, ropes, a jade bottle, and formation flags. He gives away or returns some ordinary items rather than retaining everything 135 137 138.

Relationships

  • Lin Yuan — Fellow Daoist, sparring prospect, and trusted ally. Earns Kong Xuan’s respect during the three-breath trial and later advises him on surviving Saint-level danger 132 138 139.
  • Zhao Gongming — Friendly associate who admires his treasure-seizing ability; later accompanies him to the front lines 136 143.
  • Holy Mother Huo Ling — Friendly visitor whom he offers a captured bronze mirror 135.
  • Daoist Medicine Master — Unwanted recruiter and former captive, released after Lin Yuan passes the trial 131 132.
  • Zhunti — Saint seeking to recruit him into the Western Regions; Kong Xuan refuses and escapes their ensuing contest 139 140.
  • Guangchengzi, Chijingzi, and Juliusun — Battlefield opponents whose core treasures become bargaining assets after Kong Xuan captures them 136 141.
  • Tongtian — Not his master. Lin Yuan nevertheless offers to seek Tongtian’s intervention if a Saint forcibly suppresses him 138.
