Qin Fen pressed his finger to the image and instantly grew nervous. He had no idea how much data would cost, nor did he know the item's assessed value. But he could not worry about that now. If it could be uploaded, there was hope. He could only pray that this ridiculously bizarre WeChat was at least a little more humane, like his carrier, and allowed overdrafts.
"This download will consume 1,500 in phone charges."
Huh? Qin Fen noticed something. His phone's response was a little different from before. Could it be because the fee was higher?
He had no idea what exactly was going on, but was there any point agonizing over it? No. The prompt had already made it clear: the download had worked, and he even had five hundred left over this time.
Holding the little yellow paper figure in his hand, Qin Fen saw that it had been cut quite convincingly. It looked docile enough, but he had no idea how useful it would be. After all, it had cost him 1,500 Merit—practically an astronomical price.
Qin Fen was thrilled. What man did not dream of being a hero? He was not crazy enough to stand on a rooftop and become a shadowy vigilante in the night, but with this, his safety would at least be guaranteed. Who knew what he might encounter in the future?
As the saying went, the poor relied on mutation, while the rich relied on technology. With all the Merit he would have in the future, he would not need to mutate. He would play with magical treasures and tools instead. If anyone asked someday, he could coolly say, "I'm Doraemon."
Hahaha. Qin Fen let his imagination run wild, unable to suppress the excitement in his heart.
As he stroked the little figure, he wanted to test it. But a problem lay before him. Qin Fen was no fool. After obtaining the Golden-armored Warrior, he had thought about it: how was this thing supposed to be activated? Spiritual power? Sorry. Immortal power? No luck. He did not seem to possess anything that could power it. He could not exactly set it beside his phone and charge it, could he?
"I'll find a chance to test it. Now that I have something to save my life with, I can properly plan my future. My dreams... now I've got data." The exhaustion vanished from Qin Fen's body, replaced by ever-growing energy.
"Should I get another one?" Qin Fen thought it over. "Forget it. Be content with what I have."
The sky grew darker. Qin Fen packed up his things and walked out of Dayang Department Store with light steps. The crescent moon hung overhead as he climbed onto his little scooter and headed toward his residential complex.
He had enjoyed himself today, but Zhang Ye, lying at home with his eyes half-closed, received a call from his disciple. The other party had recorded what happened today on video. After receiving it, Zhang Ye watched it carefully from beginning to end, not missing a single frame. In his eyes, Qin Fen's movements were like those of a figure in a misty painting—flawless.
When he saw Qin Fen appear on camera with both hands in view, Zhang Ye nearly spat blood. No matter how carefully he had guarded against it, that brat had still managed to show his face. Then, when countless customers began applauding, he could not hold it in any longer and broke into a violent coughing fit. A glob of snot fell onto his crotch. "Qin Fen, don't even think about taking my place. I contracted the kitchen in that restaurant."
A scream like a pig being slaughtered rang out from Zhang Ye's room.
Riding his little scooter at full speed, Qin Fen could barely contain himself. A Yellow Turban Warrior! Even if it was a toy, it was still top-grade stuff.
As he was thinking, he passed another construction site beside the residential complex and seemed to hear a low female voice.
It sounded like a pained moan, but not quite. There was a tremor mixed into it, as if someone was holding back urine. Qin Fen stopped and saw an Audi TT by the roadside, though no one seemed to be inside.
It made no sense for the car to be parked here. This was not a time for viewing apartments, and there was not a soul around at night. The workers were gathered far away, while the outskirts held little besides piles of materials. Qin Fen took a few steps into the darkness and spotted a small stack of boards. The sound seemed to be coming from there.
Quietly approaching, Qin Fen saw two figures. A burly man was pressing a woman against the materials, covering her mouth and twisting her arm. He could not see the woman's face. Her body writhed uneasily, and her feet kicked wildly. She seemed drunk; Qin Fen caught a faint scent of alcohol in the air.
Crack. A board beneath his foot snapped.
The man suddenly turned around. Moonlight flickered, scattering pale flecks of light over the two of them.
Qin Fen gave them a quick glance in the moonlight. The man stood still, one hand twisting the woman's arm behind her back while holding her waist. The fingers of his right hand were half-curled against his pants, and his pocket bulged.
Qin Fen could not make out his expression, but something felt off. The woman's head hung low, her black wavy hair covering her face. Her feet were positioned like Wing Chun's pigeon-toed stance, her knees pressed tightly together. One hand kept tugging at the man's arm while the other dangled limply. She really had drunk too much.
Watching the man's fingers slowly tighten, Qin Fen smiled and fixed his gaze on him. The moment his hand moved, the man immediately took a step forward. Heh. Qin Fen laughed inwardly, but his mouth moved just as quickly. "Xiangzi, still playing around outside this late? I knew a guy like you enjoyed getting wild outdoors. Take it easy. I'm heading home first. Stay safe, and be careful not to catch something.
"Sorry, I got the wrong idea. I interrupted you two. My apologies, I'm leaving."
Hearing Qin Fen's words, the man froze, unable to react for a moment. What the hell? Wasn't he supposed to shout, 'Let go of that girl'? Had he misunderstood?
The woman's body jerked when she heard Qin Fen's voice, but the man held her tightly. Her hand waved unconsciously.
"Yeah, I like this kind of thing. Want to join, brother? This babe's really open, and she has a great body." As he spoke, he pushed the girl forward, revealing her hot pants and oversized off-the-shoulder T-shirt. Her shoulders were smooth, and a sheen of oil glimmered above her collarbones.
"Is that really okay?" Qin Fen sounded hesitant as he casually pulled a lighter from his pocket and lit a cigarette.
"What's the problem? Good things should be shared with friends."
Listening to their conversation, the girl was overcome with despair. She had only had a little to drink. She had not felt much at first, but before long the alcohol had hit her. This guy she had met at the bar had offered to drive for her, but before they even reached her sister's house, he had revealed his true colors. Now she had no strength left, and her consciousness was beginning to blur again.
The wolf in front of her had not even left, and another jackal had arrived in the blink of an eye. She was finished today.
"Then I won't hold back." An excited, lecherous smile appeared on Qin Fen's face as he walked over.
The man smiled as well. "It's more fun together. Come on." His hand slowly began to tighten.
When Qin Fen was about three meters away, he suddenly hurled the fake Zippo in his hand, striking the man squarely on the forehead. The man was instantly dumbfounded. What the hell? Had he seen through him? That was impossible. Then, after thinking it over, he stared at Qin Fen in shock. You bastard, you had been acting from beginning to end.
Now there was no trace of lechery on Qin Fen's face, only an utterly undisguised smile. "Kid, did you think you were the only one stalling for time?" Qin Fen suddenly raised his hand and threw out a paper talisman.
"Golden-armored Warrior activated. Roaming fee consumed: 300."
The man, who had just pulled out a dagger with a ferocious expression, suddenly saw golden light shining from Qin Fen's hand as he threw out a paper figure. The figure grew with the wind. The man touched his crotch. Damn it, it was wet. Dear heavens, magic!
"Hero, spare my life!"
