Ch. 461Better Alive Than Dead
Plot points and events
- Yan Wuji challenges Di Wushuang’s leadership, claiming the Imperial Residence needs an explanation for her decisions. He offers to accept punishment if she can justify herself, but Di refuses to answer to him.
- Jian Shang recognizes that Yan is using the dispute to seize power, but lets the Imperial Residence’s internal conflict play out.
- Yan calls for battle and attacks Zhao Deping, while Jian Shang cuts through Di Wushuang’s silken threads with the Scarlet Firmament Divine Sword. The Wuhuan Faction and the Otherworlders then clash before Hengpu Pass.
- Jian Shang proves overwhelming in combat, but the gathered Apex Otherworlders avoid confronting him directly. Meanwhile, Yan Wuji’s Violet Star techniques drive Zhao Deping back.
- Di Wushuang attacks Jian Shang with her Lotus Manual. He catches her strike and quietly warns that Yan likely wants her killed so he can take control. Though surprised, Di begins reconsidering the situation. Jian Shang throws her clear rather than killing her.
- Yan notices Jian Shang spared Di and suspects he knows her secret. Jian Shang then attacks Yan, shattering his right hand. Yan flees, followed by the other enemy leaders.
- Jian Shang orders his forces not to pursue. He judges that letting the leaders escape will avoid provoking a larger conflict and may spread word of Wuhuan’s strength. Those enemies who cannot retreat are killed.
Character developments and interactions
- Jian Shang shows strategic restraint as well as martial superiority. He understands Yan’s ambition, warns Di in private, and chooses deterrence over pursuing a potentially costly victory.
- Yan Wuji presents his challenge as serving the Imperial Residence, but his ambition is clear. His confidence collapses when Jian Shang cripples him, and he flees.
- Di Wushuang remains proud and combative, yet Jian Shang’s warning makes her question whether Yan’s campaign is truly about their shared goal. Jian’s decision to spare her leaves their relationship and her secret unresolved.
- Jian Shang and Yan clash directly: Jian sees through Yan’s maneuvering, while Yan becomes increasingly suspicious that Jian knows Di’s secret.
- The Wuhuan commanders obey Jian’s order to halt pursuit, despite their anger and desire to chase the retreating enemies.
