Vifapa Pasha soon realized that he and the Fairies were on completely different wavelengths... Vera did not care what humans were thinking. She only wanted to know where she could start, what had become of the natural environment, where there was still land to sow, and whether the seeds she had brought could grow there.
Fairies were exceptionally good at planting, and Hill had supplied her seeds... His Lesser Divine Artifact, the Seed Bag, was wonderfully useful... But Calimshan's environment left Vera deeply worried.
As for the humans' other intentions, the little queen ignored them all. The human in white robes before her kept trying to discuss how they might resist future attacks by the God-Monsters, but her only response amounted to: You wretches deserve divine punishment. How could you treat nature this way? Those were not her exact words, but the meaning was unmistakable.
Hill could not help laughing as he listened.
"Why would anyone try to reason with a Fairy?" Even Selûne was surprised. "Does he really think he can persuade Vera to help them restore their kingdom?"
Hill hesitated, then looked back at the bright moonlight in the pool... He was increasingly convinced that Selûne understood many things perfectly well; she simply chose not to act on them. Otherwise, her judgments would not be so accurate.
At the very least, she was nowhere near as politically clueless as she had once seemed... Someone who truly understood nothing would not have caught the veiled hints in Vifapa Pasha's roundabout remarks.
Unfortunately, Vera truly did not want to understand... She could have, but she had no interest.
To Fairies, anything unrelated to their purpose was beneath notice... What did human suffering have to do with them? They had not caused it!
