Ch. 1241The True Enemy
Chapter Summary: “The True Enemy”
Key Plot Points and Events
- The storm giant confronting Hill is revealed to be Gruumsh, the Orcish god, controlling Talos’s avatar and attempting to devour the remaining divine power of Lei, the former Storm God.
- Gruumsh confirms that he targeted Telashir because its large Elven population made it ideal for his brutal “animal experiments.” He also reveals that the White Wolf’s refusal to enter the Abyss delayed his plans.
- Hill declares war on Gruumsh as the god threatens his world. He summons hurricanes and attacks with sand chains, testing whether his connection to the Wind Elementals can overcome Gruumsh’s control of the storm.
- Gruumsh boasts of his strength and attempts to defend himself with an Entropic Light Shield, but Hill’s chains bypass the shield entirely. Gruumsh becomes increasingly enraged by Hill’s extraordinary luck, which he associates with Corellon’s divinity and Hill’s World Tree heritage.
- Falan supports Hill with the crystal ball and the Myriad Laws Orb, blocking Gruumsh’s lightning and adding flames to Hill’s hurricanes. Gruumsh protests that the fight is unfairly two against one.
- Gruumsh summons Baghtru, his son, to assist him. However, Baghtru immediately attacks the surrounding Undead instead of helping his father. Although immensely strong, he becomes trapped in the Undead’s massive formation and is unable to reach Hill.
- Gruumsh then calls for Shargass, another Orcish deity. Shargass emerges from a distant hill, signaling that the Orcish Pantheon is continuing to enter the conflict.
Character Developments
- Hill openly embraces his identity as “Hill of Telashir, child of the World Tree.” Rather than seeking revenge merely as an Elf, he frames the battle as a defense of his homeland and a direct challenge to Gruumsh.
- Hill’s confidence grows as his attacks penetrate Gruumsh’s defenses. His natural luck and World Tree heritage become important advantages.
- Gruumsh is portrayed as violent, arrogant, and obsessed with conquest and slaughter. His anger intensifies when Hill’s luck repeatedly defeats his preparations. He is also frustrated by the limitations imposed on him by Toril’s Primordial Power, which begins rejecting his presence.
- Falan remains composed and strategically useful, quietly correcting Hill’s hesitation and providing crucial magical support.
- Baghtru is shown as powerful but foolish and impulsive. His lack of discipline causes him to waste his appearance in battle and become vulnerable to the Undead.
- Shargass is introduced as a stark contrast to Baghtru: cold, ruthless, controlled, and authoritative.
Significant Themes
- Nature versus destructive intrusion: Hill draws strength from the World Tree and natural elemental forces, while Gruumsh represents conquest, slaughter, and corruption of divine power.
- Luck and destiny: Hill’s inexplicable fortune repeatedly undermines Gruumsh’s defenses, suggesting that divine heritage and fate may protect him.
- Identity and inheritance: Hill claims both his Elven identity and his connection to the World Tree, distinguishing himself from Corellon while acknowledging the divine power within him.
- Strength versus strategy: Gruumsh relies on overwhelming force, whereas Hill and Falan combine magic, elemental control, defensive spells, and coordinated tactics.
- The danger of unchecked conquest: Gruumsh’s plans to turn Telashir into a “killing ground” emphasize the chapter’s conflict between civilization and ruthless experimentation.
Character Interactions
- Hill and Gruumsh engage in a tense exchange of accusations and insults, debating Gruumsh’s identity, motives, and connection to the World Tree.
- Hill deliberately provokes Gruumsh by invoking Corellon and the World Tree, exploiting the god’s long-standing hatred and frustration.
- Falan interrupts Hill’s momentary distraction and works with him in battle, creating a clear two-person magical partnership against Gruumsh.
- Gruumsh attempts to shift the battle by summoning Baghtru, but Baghtru’s stupidity prevents him from supporting his father effectively.
- After Baghtru fails, Gruumsh calls upon Shargass, raising the stakes and suggesting that Hill and his allies may soon face multiple members of the Orcish Pantheon.
