Back in the courtyard.
Chen Jichuan unpacked the bundle he carried. Ignoring everything else, he first looked over the five volumes of scriptures—
"Lotus Sutra."
"Hand-Copied Exposition on the True Classic of the Way and Virtue."
"Yellow Stone Daoist's Notes."
"Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method, Volume One."
"Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method, Volume Two."
Flipping through them casually, Chen Jichuan's eyes brightened slightly.
Of the five scripture volumes found on Five-Ghost Daoist, the Hand-Copied Exposition on the True Classic of the Way and Virtue was a Daoist scripture, while the Lotus Sutra was a Buddhist scripture. Both were common on the market, focusing on the meaning and teachings of the scriptures, containing explanations of many terms and technical expressions.
Chen Jichuan had read them before.
After leafing through them, he passed them over at once. Rather than hurriedly reading the Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method, he first opened Yellow Stone Daoist's Notes.
At a glance, he was immediately engrossed.
Yellow Stone Daoist's Notes was neither a Daoist nor a Buddhist scripture, but the casual writings of Yellow Stone Daoist—or perhaps a travelogue, or even a diary.
Its contents were rather scattered.
There were trivial passages of no real substance, such as descriptions of the day's weather, his mood, beautiful women he had encountered, and the like.
There were praises of mountains, rivers, and the land, mixed with more or less descriptions of Great Liang's geography and terrain.
There were also strange and novel happenings he had come across during his travels.
There were spirits and ghosts, as well as all manner of chivalrous, vicious, and bizarre affairs that Yellow Stone Daoist had seen, encountered, or personally experienced.
It also contained no shortage of descriptions of local customs and traditions.
Chen Jichuan read with great relish.
Without realizing it.
By the time he finished this section, he had already turned through half the volume in his hands.
"Eh?!"
He had thought it was a useless collection of idle ramblings, but halfway through, it unexpectedly gave Chen Jichuan a pleasant surprise.
"Shapeshifting Art."
"Circle-Light Technique."
Chen Jichuan's eyes lit up.
The latter half of Yellow Stone Daoist's Notes actually included two spells—
One was the Shapeshifting Art.
It could alter one's figure and appearance.
The other was the Circle-Light Technique.
This was a spell for "manifesting images," one of the means of gathering information. It was divided into the Greater Circle Light and the Lesser Circle Light. With the Lesser Circle Light, only children could see the manifested scenes. What Yellow Stone Daoist had recorded, however, was the Greater Circle Light, which some adults could also see.
The former was easy.
The latter was difficult.
Each had its own strengths and weaknesses.
Most ordinary Daoists cultivated the Lesser Circle Light. It was easy to learn but difficult to master. Some great figures of the Dao Sect cultivated the Greater Circle Light, which was difficult to learn and difficult to master. But once it reached great perfection, it could investigate every matter in the mortal world, examine the heavenly court and the underworld, inspect yin and yang and feng shui, probe the past and future, and seek out spirits and ghosts.
Within the Three Realms, nothing could not be investigated!
Of course.
The Circle-Light Technique cultivated by Yellow Stone Daoist was not an orthodox Dao Sect art and was nowhere near so mighty. It could only investigate certain matters in the worlds of yin and yang.
Even so, it was still a first-rate marvelous art.
Though this art was said to be used for "gathering information," beyond "investigating matters," it also included methods of Evil-Exorcising Technique, consecration, spirit communication, and punishing evil.
It could truly be called exquisitely profound.
As Yellow Stone Daoist walked the mortal world and traveled amid the dust of life, he relied on these two spells to be known by the world as one among immortals. He could also shift through a thousand forms, a divine dragon whose head could be seen but whose tail could not; even when he provoked enemies, no one could find him.
He lived until he died peacefully of old age.
The idle notes somehow found their way into Five-Ghost Daoist's hands.
"The Shapeshifting Art is fairly simple."
"The Circle-Light Technique is far too profound."
Chen Jichuan could not tell at a glance which was profound and which was simple, but Yellow Stone Daoist had written that the Circle-Light Technique could not be cultivated without great perseverance and great wisdom, and that it demanded a long expenditure of days.
The Shapeshifting Art, on the other hand, was much simpler.
In two or three years, one could achieve preliminary results, alter one's appearance, and conceal or change one's aura to a certain extent.
"Five-Ghost Daoist was shortsighted."
"He left an infinitely mysterious Circle-Light Technique unpracticed, yet went to cultivate the Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method."
Chen Jichuan secretly shook his head.
Yet he also understood.
Generally speaking, evil arts took shortcuts and were easy to master, and their power was immense. Their only flaw was that they harmed the harmony of Heaven.
Arts such as the Circle-Light Technique, however, consumed enormous amounts of time and energy to cultivate, and it was even harder to achieve anything great in a short time.
For a long period at the beginning—
They could neither kill enemies nor protect oneself.
For those of impatient temperaments, narrow horizons, or many enemies, such arts were naturally cast aside like worn-out shoes.
"I'm different."
"I have plenty of time."
Chen Jichuan's lips curved faintly upward. He carefully tucked Yellow Stone Daoist's Notes away against his chest, then put away the consecrated bronze mirror magic artifact left behind by Yellow Stone Daoist as well.
Then his gaze shifted to the final two volumes.
Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method.
This was an art of commanding and summoning ghosts, one of the evil arts among unorthodox paths. It was generally used by demonic Daoists, who committed every evil imaginable, harmed lives, and violated the wives and daughters of others.
It sounded simple and was easy to cultivate, but that was only in comparison to the Circle-Light Technique.
In truth, this method was also exceedingly complex.
In the first volume.
At the very beginning was recorded a visualization method. This was the foundation of the Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method. Even if one did not intend to cultivate it, one still had to visualize it to some degree and become familiar with its talismanic language before one could use this method.
Every Daoist sect in the world had its own secret methods.
The reason they could remain secret was because their crucial "language" and "codes" had not spread outside. Even if outsiders saw and read them, they would still find them difficult to cultivate.
If they forced the issue, they would only swallow the bitter fruit themselves.
"The method is the root."
"The technique is the branch."
"The former alone is the stairway to Heaven."
Chen Jichuan carefully examined this visualization method. Even with his meager Daoist cultivation, he could sense its ghostly aura and chilling evil energy. It was clearly not an orthodox path, and it was even less comparable to the Grand Yin Body-Refining Method he had obtained from Erban.
The former was an evil art. Not only did it lack proper principles, but after cultivating it, it would affect the cultivator himself and even change his temperament.
The latter, meanwhile, was hidden within the Supreme Lunar Yin Primordial Sovereign's Filial Piety Immortal King Golden Flower Yellow Scripture of the High Moon Palace. That scripture contained many principles of truth, goodness, and beauty, capable of guiding people toward virtue.
One evil, one good.
One wicked, one righteous.
They were as far apart as Heaven and earth.
However.
Chen Jichuan possessed the Grand Yin Body-Refining Method, an already superior visualization method. There was no need for him to switch to the Five-Ghost Visualization Method. He merely needed to understand it well enough to activate the Five Ghost Yin Soldiers.
Skipping over the visualization method.
He continued reading.
Within Volume One, aside from the visualization method, there were methods for drawing and using all kinds of talismans, such as the Troop-Dispatch Talisman, Soul-Seizing Talisman, Soul-Tracking Talisman, Soul-Suppressing Talisman, Soul-Summoning Talisman, Soul-Binding Talisman, Soul-Hooking Talisman, Troop-Recall Talisman, and many more.
Several dozen, nearly a hundred kinds of talismans.
Some captured ghosts, some summoned ghosts, some suppressed ghosts, and some killed ghosts.
They were all wicked talismans centered around the Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method, including the construction of a Yin Altar, the drawing of a Ghost-Head Command Banner, and more.
Chen Jichuan merely skimmed through them, yet his eyes were already dazzled, and he found it difficult to remember them all at once.
"No rush."
Putting away Volume One, Chen Jichuan continued on to Volume Two.
Volume Two contained quite a lot and was equally complex. Within, it recorded the specific procedures of the Five-Ghost Yin Soldier Method.
Every aspect was described in incomparable detail.
It also included corresponding hand seals, footwork, and incantations for enslaving different ghosts or issuing different commands.
In the appendix were descriptions from predecessors of all manner of ghosts.
The completeness of the method.
Filled Chen Jichuan with delighted surprise. "Once I learn this method, killing people in secret will be as easy as turning over my hand!"
