Chen Jichuan was reborn with the memories and judgment of a previous life. Before he could escape his low-status family background, the Great Chu Empire collapsed, Yongfeng County was seized by bandits, and the families of yamen personnel were implicated. At twelve, he was imprisoned and exiled to the sunless Black Prison. 1

In Black Prison, Chen endured forced Yantie Ore mining alongside his younger brother Chen Shaohe. The brothers survived by concealing their anger, observing the overseers, and treating endurance as their only immediate path forward.
