Chapter 6: Orcs? Never Companions!
Five hundred handsome, dashing, beautiful, handsome Pure-Blood Elf royal guards. They were his foundation and his trump card.
There were one hundred Elven Rangers, Elven Warriors, Elven Knights, Elven Hunters, and Elven Magic Swordsmen each. Beyond them, there were also ten Mages. Siya, who had come to see him before, was a Low-Class Mage.
Among these five hundred royal guards, the Elven Magic Swordsmen were the strongest. They were all Warriors on the verge of reaching the middle class, only slightly lower in level than Nock and Norton.
William knew how to use these people.
"Since we're hunting, we'll have to enter Blackleaf Forest anyway. We might as well do something else along the way.
"Nock, mobilize three hundred royal guards. We'll search for beast packs near the town and eliminate anything that poses a threat!" William Blackleaf said to Nock at the door as he stepped outside.
He wore fitted elven leather armor, a longsword at his waist and a wooden bow on his back. Never mind the quality of the equipment—just in terms of appearance, elven equipment was far more pleasing to the eye. Basically, any equipment with even a little quality would add certain attributes...
For example.
Charm.
It seemed that throughout Gods Continent, only the Elves and Winged Folk added all kinds of charm bonuses to their equipment. The Elves in particular had no upper limit on charm increases.
"Yes, my lord." Nock nodded and sprinted toward the barracks.
By the time William met up with Lotner, three hundred Elven Royal Guards had arrived before them.
Among these guards were one hundred Warriors, fifty Rangers, fifty Sharpshooters, and one hundred Magic Swordsmen. There was no need to bring the Knights. This was not the Plains Continent, but Blackleaf Forest. Cavalry could not possibly display their full strength in a forest.
Even games had to follow common sense.
Mounted combat was possible, but it required agile, nimble, and powerful magical beasts—not ordinary riding horses.
"My lord, you call this hunting? Why does it look more like you're about to start a war?" Lotner held his forehead, looking rather dazed at the fully armed soldiers.
William shook his head. Instead, he looked at the neatly lined-up elven soldiers before him, and a surge of pride rose in his heart. As expected of Pure-Blood Elf Warriors. Regardless of their level, every movement they made under military discipline seemed to have come from the same mold.
So he took a deep breath and, ignoring the puzzled looks of passing civilians, awkwardly shouted, "My soldiers, I am your lord, William Blackleaf.
"Perhaps you do not enjoy following me!
"But I know that you are the finest and most outstanding Warriors!
"When I first came to this territory, perhaps I left a very poor impression on you. But during these past days of rest, I have reflected deeply on myself!
"I know I did many things wrong.
"So I have decided to change. I will seriously develop the territory of Border Town."
The speech was utterly uninspiring. Quite a few residents of the territory gaped wide enough to swallow an entire hot dog...
But William did not care. He was a legendary NPC. The defense value on his face was high enough; it was thick enough!
After a pause, he continued, "If the town is to develop, it cannot do without money. I know the territory has little income right now, but I believe treasure lies in the forest before us. Please march with me, clear the way for the territory, and press forward without fear."
"By your command, my lord!" Three hundred elven guards roared in unison, their momentum magnificent. Never mind whether they meant it sincerely—it looked intimidating enough. After all, cooperating with the lord's speech was a subordinate's basic duty.
William nodded expressionlessly, raised his hand, drew his sword, and pointed its blade south. "March with me!"
"Yes!"
Lotner looked at William Blackleaf and felt as though the young man had become a different person. The foolish, silly version of him from before had turned into a clever little rascal!
But William did not think much of it. He merely wanted to inspire their loyalty and fighting spirit. Making them submit to him completely would require many methods. There was no need to rush.
As for the soldiers who had once been in the territory, they had mostly been Half-Elves and humans.
But after his cheap old man disappeared, those people had fled the fastest, nearly emptying out his entire family fortune.
So now, he only had these five hundred Pure-Blood Elf royal guards. As for expanding his forces, it was not the right time yet. With no money and no food, even selling himself would not earn enough.
They headed south, leaving the town behind. Only after traveling seven or eight kilometers did they gradually enter the lushly forested Blackleaf Forest Mountains.
Three hundred elven Warriors definitely counted as a respectable military force—well, at least in this remote corner.
After all, for a minor noble in a human nation, having several dozen soldiers as guards was already quite good.
The moment they entered Blackleaf Forest, the sky seemed to darken.
William led the group at the front, with Lotner following closely behind to guide them toward the nearest and most threatening orc tribe.
Of the three hundred Elven Royal Guards, fifty Rangers had already spread out. They were the best scouts, able to swing through the trees like monkeys while observing the army's front, rear, left, and right to prevent unexpected incidents. They were also Sharpshooters.
The Elven Hunters also had to spread out, though they moved in groups of ten. Every one of them carried bows and arrows as well as short swords. A few also carried large packs containing huge, tough nets for capturing prey.
They could also make traps. Other than special items, most materials could be gathered locally. After all, NPCs rarely possessed spatial treasures.
As for the attributes of Elven Warriors and Elven Magic Swordsmen, one was half Constitution and half Strength, while the other was half Strength and half Agility.
The Elven Warriors carried moderately curved blades and shields. They were Shield Warriors.
The Elven Magic Swordsmen, meanwhile, wielded longswords. They could choose between one-handed and two-handed styles, or use spears instead. They were a particularly cool special class.
Moreover, the Magic Swordsmen possessed more abundant battle aura. Every move they made, whether at range or up close, could unleash more powerful aura sword techniques.
Not much time passed.
Three Elven Rangers came sprinting back in succession and briefly informed everyone that eight hundred meters ahead was a small orc tribe.
Orcs, Undead, Demons, and the like belonged to the Dark Faction.
Humans, Elves, Winged Folk, and so on belonged to the Light Faction, though the three rarely contacted or communicated with one another.
Half-Elves, Goblins, Dwarf Race members, and the like belonged to the Neutral Faction.
But Neutral Faction was merely a pleasant name. They generally did not take part in battles between the two sides because they preferred to go with the flow and seek benefits for themselves. They also leaned more toward the Light Faction.
What was more, Neutral Faction lords like town lords basically rushed wherever there were benefits to be had. They had nothing to do with the Chaotic Faction. Put more pleasantly, everyone simply called them the Neutral Faction.
But interestingly enough, William had triggered a quest.
[Quest: Crisis Near the Territory.] [As a Neutral Faction lord of a small town, if you wish to develop your territory, you must first protect the safety of its people. Only by bringing them safety can they bring you loyalty. If you want sustained development, you must eliminate or subdue every dangerous race within a thirty-kilometer radius.] [Class: A-Plus Class.] [First Stage: An unexpectedly discovered orc tribe. Cruel and bloodthirsty orcs can never be your companions, so kill their men and seize their women!] [Reward: 5,000 experience.] [Reward: Information about an unexpected mineral vein.]
Seeing the quest description, William Blackleaf tugged at the corner of his mouth. As expected of the Mainframe of Gods Game—it was still so improper. Yet his heart stirred nonetheless, because he had not expected that he could really accept quests. It was even an A-Plus Class chain quest. If he could complete it all, the experience would fill him right up.
He had once hoped for this, and now it had become reality. It truly was exciting.
In that case...
There was no need to grind day and night anymore. After going to bed early and rising early, his kidneys could steadily improve too.
He immediately said in a low voice, "This orc tribe once ambushed our town during the lord succession period. That was precisely what caused a large number of civilians to flee.
"Furthermore, filthy and cruel orcs are our eternal enemies. We must wipe them out in one stroke!
"How many orcs are currently in this tribe?"
"There are roughly more than seven hundred orcs, including around one hundred and eighty Warriors. From our observations, no other orcs have gone out hunting, so all the orcs should currently be within the tribe. There are very few guards. If we seize the chance, we can take out those guards immediately without making a sound," an Elven Ranger said indignantly. Clearly, they were extremely confident in themselves.
And why did the Elven Rangers possess such inexplicable confidence? Naturally, because they were genuinely formidable!
The approximate racial combat strength ratio on Gods Continent was this: at the same class and level, one Elf equaled one Demon, equaled 1.5 Half-Elves, equaled 1.5 Winged Folk, equaled two humans, equaled two Dwarves, equaled four orcs.
As for Goblins, an Elf of the same class and level could probably beat more than a dozen Goblins barehanded.
Oh, and there were also Murlocs, the most numerous race on the entire continent. An Elf of the same class and level could probably beat several hundred of them barehanded...
If not for the orcs having the powerful Demon Alliance, and their outrageously strong reproductive ability, they would have been wiped out in the previous era...
Among the races of the Gods, Goblins gave birth in litters, while orcs popped out three or four at a time.
And Murlocs? Have you ever seen fish eggs? They just kept bubbling out in clusters...
After learning the number of orcs, William immediately formulated a few tactics. Then he pointed his sword at the orc tribe and began advancing.
"Just when I was getting sleepy, you brought me a pillow. For the mineral vein, I suppose I'll have to apologize for the deep racial hatred between us." William licked his lips and strode toward the enticing orc tribe.
