Epilogue: Si Chi

In the newly prepared nursery, the little silver-white mermaid hatchling swam a circle around his new home. He had placed his eggshell on a miniature pink shell-shaped bed.

Three adults stood around the outside of the nursery, staring intently at the newborn mermaid hatchling. Every inch of his skin glowed with a translucent, pearly whiteness, so fragile that it seemed it could be scratched open with ease.

Lu Jiu arrived a little late, but fortunately, what he had worried about had not happened. The mermaid hatchling was far more lively than he had imagined.

The little hatchling glanced at Si Jinyan, then slowly swam toward Chi Li. He reached out and pressed his hand against the glass in front of Chi Li's face.

There were still translucent webs between the hatchling's fingers that had not fully receded. He remembered that, during that time in the past, Chi Li had not liked him.

He also remembered how Chi Li had looked lying in the hospital bed. He cautiously watched Chi Li, sensing his breathing and heartbeat. The hatchling let out a breath of relief. Chi Li was healthy. Chi Li had recovered well.

Chi Li had no idea what this little fellow was thinking. He only stared at him without speaking, his little face seeming somewhat wary and afraid.

He knew he had been rather cold toward this little thing before. Did he need to coax him?

Chi Li reached out and tapped the glass wall. The little hatchling was so startled that he backed away two steps. Only after seeing the smile appear on Chi Li's face did he steady himself.

The tip of his silver-white tail swayed uneasily in the water. He slowly swam toward Chi Li again, while the faint smile remained on Chi Li's face.
