However, news of his discomfort reached Qi Yan in less than a night.
Qi Yan insisted on taking Chi Li to the hospital, his tone firm. "You promised me last time that you'd get checked once you'd rested up. But you still haven't gone. I can't keep indulging you. We're going today, no excuses."
The moment Chi Li got home, he went back to bed. He slept until Qi Yan's knocking woke him. Standing in the doorway, he rubbed his messy hair, his expression clearly reluctant.
Qi Yan braced an arm against the door, looking fully prepared not to leave unless Chi Li agreed.
After a brief standoff, Chi Li could only compromise. He grabbed the T-shirt beside him and pulled it on. "Got it. Let's go."
A smile appeared on Qi Yan's face. He ruffled Chi Li's hair. "That's more like it. Listen to your brother."
Chi Li followed him to the hospital. They had only just finished several basic examinations and drawn blood when he suddenly received a call from the old commander of the mercenary corps.
Lang Bo said, "Chi Li, do you have time for a mission soon?"
Chi Li glanced at Qi Yan beside him, then walked farther away before continuing. "I do, Uncle Lang. What mission?"
The person on the other end hesitated for a moment. "Mm... it's a role-playing job. Not difficult. It's just that there aren't many people left at the base right now, and none of them meet the requirements. When are you free? I'll explain it to you in person."
Chi Li knew Lang Bo would not call out of the blue. There was an eighty-percent chance it was urgent, so he said, "I can come over in a little while."
Lang Bo said, "All right. I'll wait for you at the base."
After hanging up, Chi Li cooperated with the final few medical examinations. He did not think there was anything wrong with him. Without waiting for the results, he dragged Qi Yan away. The examination report would sync to his personal account anyway, so he could check it later.
Qi Yan was also worried about truly annoying Chi Li. "All right, all right. Let's go."
After returning home, Chi Li piloted his private spacecraft to the mercenary corps' base.
Bo Lang said, "The mission isn't complicated. The employer deals in interstellar jewelry. He was originally planning to hold an adulthood banquet for his younger son on the twenty-third—tomorrow. But this morning, he suddenly received an anonymous threat letter saying someone intended to kill his son. The employer used to conduct some under-the-table business too, and he's worried that an old enemy hired an assassin."
"The adulthood banquet still has to be held. Delaying it by one day is already the limit."
"You know what these sorts of banquets mean to celebrities and powerful figures—building connections, expanding business, and so on. Invitations were sent out in advance, and he can't go back on his word. It would seriously damage his reputation. He can't just cancel it, so the employer came to us, and we came up with this plan."
"Find a stand-in to replace his son. There aren't many people at the base right now, and we couldn't pick anyone suitable. How many people here have the air of a rich young master? They're either too tall and burly, or skinny little things with pointed faces and monkey cheeks."
Several mercenary corps members were sitting beside Chi Li and Bo Lang. Hearing that, they coughed unhappily. "Bo Lang!"
Interrupted, Bo Lang shrugged and told them, "Slip of the tongue. You're all very handsome."
Bo Lang continued to Chi Li, "When the time comes, we'll place several of our own people around you, disguised as bodyguards. We've already scoped out the area around the corridors and will station the rest of our people there as well, including long-range shooters, to protect you."
With Chi Li disguised as the guest of honor, his skills would allow him to sense danger in advance, and he would have a greater chance of evading it if danger did arise. With top-tier mercenaries protecting him nearby, it was a good plan.
The main thing was finding someone who resembled the employer's younger son to play the central role. Chi Li was worried. "Won't I be found out?"
Bo Lang said, "I saw the photo he provided. You're definitely better-looking than him."
Chi Li froze for a moment, then laughed.
Bo Lang laughed too. "No more jokes. Someone with a similar build will do. You're perfectly suited for it. We've worked out the plan. As the 'younger son,' the guest of honor at the banquet, you'll claim to be unwell and stay in a partially screened private booth on the second floor. You won't go downstairs to mingle."
"There's one more thing. His younger son was in a car accident. He needs a wheelchair, and his health isn't very good either, so you'll need to use a wheelchair too."
That would make it even easier to conceal his identity. Chi Li said, "All right. When do we leave?"
Bo Lang said, "Someone has already gone ahead to scout the situation. Get a good rest at the base tonight. We leave early tomorrow morning."
The mercenary corps members had long since developed enough mutual understanding. Once they discussed everyone's duties for the day, they could head straight into a mission without needing much coordination.
Bo Lang draped an arm over Chi Li's shoulder. "Stay at the base today."
Some of the mercenaries nearby had not seen Chi Li for a long time. They chimed in as well, "Little Chi Li, drink with me tonight!" Most of the people here were older than Chi Li.
Chi Li agreed. That night, everyone gathered around the large outdoor dining table to feast and drink, utterly unaffected by the mission awaiting them. They were all battle-hardened veterans; even drunk, they could raise a gun and aim by reflex. The little alcohol on the table was nothing to them.
Chi Li was plied with quite a bit of alcohol. By the time he returned to his room at the base, he did not check his light brain. After washing up, he went straight to bed.
It was not until the next morning that Chi Li turned on his light brain and saw the medical examination report sent to his inbox. Only several values in the blood test report were marked as noticeably elevated.
Chi Li frowned and opened the report analysis. The artificial intelligence began an automatic voice analysis: "...Preliminary testing indicates that you are in the early stages of pregnancy, but further examination is recommended..."
The moment he heard those words, Chi Li felt as if something had suddenly exploded in his mind, while his heart plunged hard. His first reaction was that it was impossible.
He checked it over and over again, until someone knocked on the door to his room, and then the door was pushed open directly.
Chi Li immediately put away his light brain. Du Wei, one of the mercenary corps members, stood in the doorway and waved at him. "Little Chi Li, are you sleeping in? Time for breakfast. Once we're done eating, we're setting off."
