Background / History

The Chenghuan Emperor had the Imperial Astronomical Bureau official executed after discovering that the ominous prophecy surrounding his eldest son, Xiao Hanye, had been fabricated under the Imperial Noble Consort’s orders. He confined the pregnant consort to the Cold Palace and named Hanye heir apparent when the child was one year old. 1

After ascending the throne, he carried out reforms to stabilize the court and consolidate imperial authority. He deliberately kept the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Guard Bureau vacant for years while building a power structure loyal to the throne. 10

Despite having many sons, he lacks an easy, intimate relationship with them. His desire for uncomplicated familial affection makes Shen Tingjue’s frank concern, shared food, and stories especially meaningful to him. 10

Personality

The Emperor is politically experienced and authoritative, having spent much of his life navigating schemes and concealed hostility at court.
