Background

Wen Jingkong is Crown Prince Xiao Hanye’s cousin and childhood companion. The two were notorious pranksters when young, having stolen palace parrots, killed the Emperor’s koi, tampered with the Chancellor’s memorials, and braided their tutor’s beard; Wen remains familiar enough to tease Xiao openly, though he still knows when to retreat. 8

As commander of the Imperial Guard, Wen oversees the capital’s security and struggles with its chronic underfunding. The force has more than twenty thousand guards, yet its annual allocation cannot cover training, equipment, repairs, recruitment, or an adequate training ground. 15 16

Appearance

Wen carries the imposing martial presence of a longtime military commander. He can dress with deliberate elegance when he wants to appear less intimidating, though his military aura remains noticeable. 9

Personality

Wen is outspoken, irreverent, and fond of teasing, especially where Xiao Hanye’s private feelings are concerned. His intimacy with the Crown Prince lets him speak more freely than most, but Xiao’s authority still reliably frightens him into backing down. 8 29 44

He is practical about military affairs and deeply frustrated by the Imperial Guard’s lack of funding. He can be cynical about court corruption and aristocratic influence, yet continues to advocate for better conditions for his soldiers. 15 16

Story Role / Major Arcs

Discovery of Lin Zhao’s Survival

Wen visits Xiao Hanye to complain about his exhausting duties and learns that Lin Zhao has been found alive. His joking speculation about amnesia inadvertently comes close to the truth, and he is stunned to discover that Lin’s current identity, Shen Tingjue, was the person who supposedly fainted at the academy. 8

Meeting Shen Tingjue

Wen meets Shen at Drunken Immortal Tower after carefully dressing up to avoid frightening the supposedly delicate young master. He quickly becomes drunk while speaking with him, and Xiao Hanye has him knocked unconscious and sent home. 9

Imperial Guard Funding Crisis

Wen explains the Guard’s financial strain to Shen and challenges him to recover the Ministry of Revenue’s unpaid debts. Shen takes the challenge literally, threatening Minister Wang Zhonggui until payment is arranged. 15 16

Sang Wen Investigation

After a murder occurs at Spring Garden, Wen helps secure the scene and later reports evidence tying the dead student Sang Wen to the disgraced Zhan family. His findings help shift the inquiry toward the possible identity of Sang Wen as Zhan Lingxiang. 26 28

Drainage and Training-Ground Reforms

Following discussion of the Zizhou flood disaster and Chang’an’s delayed drainage repairs, Xiao Hanye orders Wen to supervise the Ministry of Works’ repairs. The Crown Prince also grants the Northern Plains Hunting Grounds to the Imperial Guard for renovation into a training ground. 29

Drowning Sorrows

Wen is persuaded by Shen to drink two jars of strong liquor at the Imperial Guard camp. He becomes completely unconscious, forcing his deputy to watch over him and prevent further humiliation. 45 46

• Wen once promised that every Imperial Guard would call Shen Tingjue “Dad” if Shen recovered the Ministry of Revenue’s debt; after Shen succeeded, he tried to make his deputy fulfill the promise instead. 16 26
