History

Recruit Company

Nolan distinguished himself before enlistment by surviving the Coming-of-Age Trial’s one-against-two battle against his parents and injuring both of them. Sparta considered him the standout among six otherwise ordinary incoming recruits. 92

Upon joining Sparta’s squad, Nolan was the only newcomer to recognize that Sparta’s offer to fight all six recruits concealed overwhelming confidence. During the resulting duel, he coordinated with two allies, headbutted Sparta hard enough to rupture tiny blood vessels in his nose, and continued attacking after being used as a shield against his own teammates. Sparta identified Nolan as the strongest and most courageous recruit, but defeated him after only five minutes. 94 95

Over the following months, Nolan completed missions alongside the squad—including planetary conquests, Anti-Viltrum Alliance base attacks, and rebellion suppression—and grew closer to the older soldiers. 96

Succession Conflict

When the Empire legalized unrestricted violence in its succession struggle, Nolan helped restrain Sparta from confronting the generals alone. He first considered escape, then concluded that the squad’s mutual trust was its greatest advantage: united, they could overwhelm enemies who attacked them individually. 102

Nolan survived the civil war after Sparta returned to save him and the squad from attacking Viltrumite Warriors. Of the squad, only Sparta, Clayton, and Nolan remained alive afterward. 105 117

He remained at Sparta’s bedside during the latter’s recovery, though he accidentally tilted the hospital bed while waking up in panic. He later relayed Sparta’s sudden Empire-wide fame, including rumors that Sparta defeated Conquest and blinded Kregg. 116 117

Promotion and Great Expedition

Sparta approved Nolan’s appointment as squad leader despite considering him young and still lacking in strength. Nolan’s potential and service record convinced Sparta that he deserved room to grow. 125

Before the Great Expedition, Nolan pressed Sparta for its scale and was shaken to learn that it would deploy at least ten billion Viltrumite Warriors. 132

Defection and Resistance

Nolan became the father of Mark Grayson, a half-Viltrumite raised on Earth by a human mother. He attempted to recruit Mark into the Empire’s conquest of Earth, leading to a father-son battle on Thraxa. 155

After betraying the Viltrumite Empire, Nolan was imprisoned, tortured by Craig, and held for execution. Allen rescued him; Nolan broke free, fought beside Allen against Viltrumite guards, and ultimately agreed to join Allen’s rebellion. 159 173

When he reunited with a parallel-universe Sparta, Nolan recognized him immediately as his former captain and embraced him despite believing Sparta had died. He later persuaded Sparta to join Tardis by appealing to the deaths of Clayton, Digger, and their other comrades. 181 182

Following Thragg’s death and the Empire’s decline, Nolan argued that Viltrumites should rebuild through reproduction with other species rather than disband. He and Duken convinced Sparta to serve as the Empire’s temporary ruler and reform its racial-purity laws. 196

Personality

Nolan is cautious and perceptive, often recognizing danger before his peers do. He distrusted Sparta’s apparently reckless six-versus-one challenge and later asked the practical question that revealed the Great Expedition’s immense scale. 94 132

He is also stubbornly courageous. Even after being bloodied and outmatched by Sparta, Nolan continued attacking and chose a headbutt when conventional strikes failed. 95

Nolan is deeply loyal to Sparta and his comrades. He remained beside Sparta during his recovery, secretly followed him when he drank himself unconscious, and carried him back to safety rather than leaving him alone. 116 128

Later experiences make Nolan more politically pragmatic. He embraces cooperation, population reform, and long-term rebuilding, though he is willing to use emotional pressure when persuading Sparta to lead the Empire. 102 196
