Background / History

Thragg began as an ordinary soldier and was once subordinate to the already-renowned Teddus. By Algor's reign, he had become the Emperor's trusted guard commander, surpassing many older Viltrumite veterans in strength and standing. 97

As Algor's adviser, Thragg championed an enormous campaign of expansion against the Anti-Viltrum Alliance and unsubjugated planets. He proposed deploying one billion Viltrumite warriors to seize worlds within thirty million light-years, presenting universal conquest as achievable and inevitable. 23 He reinforced Algor's imperial ideology by characterizing invasion as the “reclamation” of resources that supposedly already belonged to the Empire. 23

When the Alliance counterattacked and millions of imperial warriors died within a day, Thragg recognized the strategic danger posed by superior enemy numbers and urged Algor to send reinforcements. Algor dismissed the warning, leaving Thragg troubled but still obedient. 34 48 He later carried out Algor's order to conscript conquered peoples into the war effort as expendable auxiliary troops. 49

Thragg's later extremism was shaped by Teddus's betrayal. Although Algor had ordered Teddus executed, Thragg spared his former superior out of personal feeling; Teddus subsequently assassinated Algor. Thragg came to believe that his mercy had caused the Emperor's death. 100 122

Following the civil war for the throne, Thragg defeated his rivals and assumed control as Grand Regent. His fight with Sparta left him one-eyed, but Sparta's unprecedented power also earned Thragg's respect and fascination. 116 117 Rather than eliminate Sparta, Thragg recruited him as Grand Marshal and offered him authority second only to the Regency. 119 121

Thragg later introduced the Purification Plan, a proposed internal purge intended to remove perceived dissent and corruption. Sparta's opposition and relentless pressure ultimately forced Thragg to cancel it. 122 123 He then prepared and launched the Great Expedition Operation, personally leading one of two fronts against the Anti-Viltrum Alliance while Sparta commanded the other. 133 137

Thragg can turn conquest into “reclamation,” frame mass violence as necessity, and inspire other ministers with visions of universal Viltrumite supremacy. 23 His strategic instincts are more cautious than Algor's: he understood the threat of enemy numbers and repeatedly advocated reinforcement when the front began collapsing. 34 48

His guilt over sparing Teddus made him increasingly distrustful of mercy. This culminated in the Purification Plan, which he saw as necessary surgery to remove the Empire's “rot.” 122 However, he can compromise when faced with Sparta's persistence, ultimately cancelling the plan rather than escalating their conflict. 123
