Background

Neji is Hizashi Hyuga's son and Hyuga Tenka's younger brother. When the clan elders sought to place the Caged Bird seal on Neji, Tenka violently opposed them; in this timeline, Neji never receives the seal. 1 12

Tenka's absence became Neji's greatest motivation. Though already praised as a genius, Neji trained relentlessly so that no one could regard Tenka's younger brother as inferior. 3 When Tenka returns to Konoha, Neji abandons his usual composure, embraces him, and proudly reports that he has never stopped training. 2

Tenka later tests Neji at the clan training ground. Although Tenka withstands his complete Gentle Fist sequence without meaningful injury, Neji's Vacuum Palm and Mountain Crusher make Tenka's body tremble slightly and earn his approval. 3

Personality

Neji is intensely disciplined and measures himself against Tenka's seemingly unreachable standard. He accepts the immense gap between them without resentment, treating it as a reason to work harder. 2 8

He is fiercely protective of Hinata. After Tenka reveals that Hinata's fear and neglected needs have hindered her development, Neji rushes to confront Hiashi and press him to change. He later states that he will protect Hinata until she becomes strong enough to protect him in return. 11 13

Though composed in combat, Neji can be blunt and provocative toward suspicious opponents. During the written Chūnin Exams, he warns Kabuto that his Byakugan can see through any attempt at concealment. 35

Neji is present when Root attacks the Hyuga training ground. He uses Heavenly Rotation against a surviving assassin but is wounded by a poisoned blade. Tenka treats him with an antidote and Mystical Palm Technique, determining that he will recover after several days. 4

During the Hyuga's retaliation against Root, Neji witnesses Tenka destroy a barrier with an enormous Vacuum Palm. The display leaves him discouraged by the difference in their strength, though Hizashi reassures him that Tenka is an unprecedented exception. 8

Hinata's Supporter

After learning of Hinata's Tenseigan potential and troubled upbringing, Neji confronts Hiashi over Hinata's fear of speaking up about hunger. His intervention helps push Hiashi toward becoming more supportive. 11 12

Neji later declares that Hinata surpassing him would be something to celebrate rather than fear. 13

Chūnin Exams
