Background

Minato was introduced as a young Konoha jōnin whose stated dream was to become Hokage. Hiruzen assigned him to personally supervise five-year-old Obito Uchiha, whose early graduation left him without teammates. Minato accepted the unusual arrangement and began providing one-on-one instruction. 7

He tailored Obito’s training around chakra control, teaching tree-walking, water-walking, cliff-climbing, meditation, and practical movement. Rather than simply drilling techniques, he observed Obito’s progress and built a training plan suited to his abilities. 8

During Obito’s first mission in the Land of Rain, Minato allowed him to conduct an intelligence investigation independently while remaining prepared to intervene. When Obito infiltrated Akatsuki beyond his original assignment, Minato reclassified the mission from B-rank to A-rank and later ordered his withdrawal. 8 11 13

Years later, Minato stopped Obito from injuring himself in an attempt to awaken the Sharingan. Third Shinobi World War

Minato and Obito arrive at the Land of Earth front when a Konoha unit is reduced to four survivors against fifty Iwagakure jōnin and three hundred chūnin. Using a distributed network of Flying Thunder God kunai, Minato takes the enemy jōnin while Obito attacks the chūnin ranks. Their victory establishes Minato’s Yellow Flash reputation alongside Obito’s new title, the Blood-Red Flash. 21 22 24

At Kannabi Bridge, Iwagakure traps the pair and surrounds them with ten thousand shinobi after cutting off their teleportation routes. Konoha’s leadership ultimately decides it cannot send a rescue force. Minato relies on Gamabunta, Sage Mode, and the two toad sages to reverse the battle, rescues the critically wounded Obito, kills Akatsuchi, and captures Kitsuchi. 27 28 30

The battle ends with nearly ten thousand Iwagakure forces killed or routed. Konoha publicizes Minato and Obito as the “Two Lights of Konoha,” while Iwagakure is forced to consider a ceasefire. 31 32

Hidden Cloud Front

After Obito returns from Dragon Cave training, Minato and Kakashi face the Third Raikage with their forces running out of chakra. Minato prepares to sacrifice himself with the Reaper Death Seal so his comrades can escape, but Obito and Rin arrive in time to stop him. 52

Minato, Obito, Kakashi, and Rin combine their chakra into a massive Rasengan that helps defeat the Third Raikage. Hiruzen subsequently elevates Minato toward the Hokage position and appoints Obito and Kakashi to ANBU command roles. 52 53

Obito’s Defection

At the Five Kage Summit, Minato arrives after widespread destruction and learns that Hiruzen has been murdered. Kakashi confirms Obito’s responsibility, and Obito personally confesses to both killing Hiruzen and abducting the Fourth Mizukage. 64

Minato offers Obito clemency and a chance to surrender, but cannot bring himself to attack immediately. Obito exploits that hesitation by taking Rin hostage and escaping, leaving Minato to face political blame, Konoha’s instability, and the prospect of becoming Hokage. 65 69
