Background & History

Uchiha Massacre

Obito appears during the Uchiha massacre as a masked participant. He continues killing survivors and harvesting their Sharingan, describing the operation as both fruitful and pitiable. He considers Itachi an exceptional but expendable pawn and remains suspicious enough that Itachi kills another clansman to maintain his cover. 1

After the massacre, Obito meets Itachi outside Konoha and brings him toward Akatsuki. Their journey briefly becomes almost domestic when they hunt and cook together, but the atmosphere collapses when they accuse one another over the deaths of the Uchiha and Izumi. 6

Recruitment of Itachi

When Itachi attacks him with Amaterasu, Obito emerges unharmed and physically overpowers him. Rather than kill Itachi, he exploits Izumi’s death and offers him a vision of a peaceful world where the dead may return. Itachi outwardly accepts the premise, while both remain wary during their shared meal. 7

Obito introduces Itachi to Pain in the Rain Country, then withdraws into the background as Akatsuki’s concealed mastermind. Pain accepts Itachi largely because of Obito’s involvement. 8

Surveillance and the Mist Trap

In the Mist Village, Obito controls Yagura through Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu and uses the resulting crisis to test Itachi. He is prepared to eliminate Itachi if the younger Uchiha has grown beyond his control. 31

Itachi disrupts Obito’s control over Yagura, extracts the Three-Tails, and seals it within himself. Obito considers revealing himself to intervene, but remains hidden because exposure would endanger his larger plans. 32

Exploiting Itachi’s Illness

When Bloodline Disease leaves Itachi bedridden, Obito takes the opportunity to extract the Three-Tails from him. He then removes Itachi’s right Mangekyō Sharingan, implants the Amaterasu eye in place of his own ordinary Sharingan, and attempts to claim Tsukuyomi as a spare. 43

Itachi wakes during the second extraction and feigns cooperation. Before Obito can take Tsukuyomi, Itachi crushes the eye and escapes through Reverse Summoning. This betrayal turns Obito from a figure Itachi once viewed with detached understanding into the target of a personal grudge. 43 44
