Background / History

While affiliated with Akatsuki, Orochimaru discussed the Uchiha massacre with Sasori and regarded twelve-year-old Itachi’s rise to S-rank rogue ninja as remarkable. He had previously met Itachi and remembered him as a good child. 10

At an Akatsuki meeting, Orochimaru immediately attempted to recruit Itachi as his partner. Jūzō opposed the proposal, and Pain ended the dispute. 19

Six months later, Orochimaru met Itachi at a tavern. Itachi sought his expertise on turning unrelated people into biological brothers, offering Mangekyō Sharingan-related cells in return. Orochimaru recognized that Itachi’s real concern involved Shisui, agreed that the procedure was possible, and negotiated for repeated samples for cloning and refinement. 25 26

Orochimaru also granted Itachi a snake-summoning contract, giving him a connection to Ryūchi Cave and a potential path toward Sage Jutsu. After receiving Fugaku’s Mangekyō-derived cells and Shisui’s hair for DNA analysis, Orochimaru defected from Akatsuki. 26 27 28

He later completed a genetic serum intended to make Itachi biologically compatible with Shisui. The treatment successfully altered Itachi’s body, but Orochimaru concealed its severe paralysis and immobilization effects. He later admitted that he had wanted Itachi to see how Akatsuki would treat him once weakened, though he did not expect Itachi to lose an eye. 41 47

After Itachi escaped Akatsuki and sought him out again, Orochimaru treated him as a trusted guest, restored one of Little White’s eyes, continued researching Mangekyō replication, and began planning with Itachi to recover Shisui’s other eye from Danzō. 47 48 49 50

Personality

Orochimaru is intensely curious about knowledge that others consider forbidden or impossible. He is especially fascinated by the Mangekyō Sharingan, genetic inheritance, cloning, and the relationship between cells and supernatural abilities. Itachi’s unusual questions initially unsettle him, but they also make him regard Itachi as an intellectual equal rather than a child or specimen. 25 26

He is exceptionally perceptive and difficult to deceive. Orochimaru immediately identifies Shisui as the subject behind Itachi’s fabricated story, later detects that Itachi’s supplied Mangekyō cells did not originate from Itachi himself, and deduces much of Itachi’s plan for genetic alteration. 26 41 48

Despite his manipulative habits, Orochimaru can display unexpected consideration. He regrets the consequences of withholding the serum’s side effects, prepares a guest room for Itachi, replaces Little White’s eye, and promises to find Itachi a suitable replacement eye. 47 49 His confidence can also become a flaw: he initially treats Danzō as a straightforward Kage-level target before Itachi explains the danger of Izanagi and Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan. 49 50
