Background and History

Warring States leader

Hashirama fought Madara Uchiha as the Senju and Uchiha clans continued their inherited war. Though their personal duels were intense, both repeatedly avoided seriously harming the other, unlike the wider battlefields around them. 1

After Senju Butsuma and Uchiha Tajima died in the same conflict, Hashirama and Madara respectively succeeded as clan heads. The new leaders immediately issued a ceasefire, with Hashirama refusing Tobirama’s demand to pursue the withdrawing Uchiha. 12

Hashirama secretly met with Madara to discuss ending the clan wars. He believed that unifying the shinobi clans under a powerful force could create peace, though Uchiha Yuan warned him that political unification alone would not resolve conflict. 14 26

Conflict, reconciliation, and Konoha’s founding

Hashirama was drawn into a Senju-led coalition ambush against the Uchiha at a mineral vein. He appeared conflicted throughout the attack, but ultimately ordered the coalition to advance against Madara’s forces. 41

After Izuna was gravely wounded by Tobirama, Uchiha Yuan challenged Tobirama to a formal duel. Yuan overwhelmingly defeated Tobirama, but Hashirama intervened before the killing blow, publicly conceded defeat for the Senju, and used the moment to declare reconciliation between the two clans. 50 52

Hashirama, Madara, Tobirama, and Yuan selected the site of their new settlement together. Hashirama named it Konoha, introduced the principles of the Will of Fire, and used Wood Release to construct the village’s initial framework. 52 53

First Hokage

With Yuan withdrawing from most village meetings and Madara declining the position, Hashirama became Konoha’s First Hokage. He struggled with administration and depended heavily on Tobirama’s institutional planning. 55

Hashirama embraced Yuan’s proposals for centralized schooling and public facilities, establishing the Konoha Academy while overseeing the rapid growth of the new village. 53

Valley of the End and final years

When Madara returned with the Nine-Tails to destroy Konoha, Hashirama confronted him alone. He subdued the armored Nine-Tails with Sage Arts, captured the beast, and defeated Madara after using a Wood Clone to create an opening. 75

Hashirama did not know that Madara had faked his death. At Madara’s public funeral, he asked Yuan not to turn the apparent death into another conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha. 76

As Hokage, Hashirama continued pursuing international peace. He personally aided the Uzumaki when the Land of Whirlpools was attacked, later convened the first Five Kage Summit, and distributed eight Tailed Beasts to other villages as part of a peace agreement. 87 95 110

Hashirama died unexpectedly in Konoha’s nineteenth year. His final wish was to see the peaceful world described by Shadow Clone Zero. 112

Personality

Hashirama is fundamentally idealistic and deeply weary of war. He repeatedly prioritizes reducing casualties over immediate military advantage, from halting Tobirama’s pursuit of the Uchiha to rejecting Madara’s proposal for world conquest. 12 58

His desire for peace is sincere, but it leaves him vulnerable to political maneuvering. He often struggles to understand Tobirama’s schemes, Uchiha Yuan’s long-term calculations, and the institutional consequences of his own decisions. 37 68 110
