Background
Madara grew up during the Warring States period as the eldest surviving son of Uchiha Tajima and an older brother to Izuna and Yuan. He fought Hashirama Senju as a personal equal amid the larger Uchiha–Senju conflict, while the deaths of two of his younger brothers at Tobirama’s hands left him unable to separate clan hatred from personal grief 1 2.
After Tajima and Senju Butsuma killed one another during the battle that coincided with the Kaguya raid, Madara and Hashirama inherited leadership of their respective clans. The two immediately ordered a ceasefire, but Madara returned home to find the Uchiha settlement devastated and Yuan near death 12. He protected Yuan’s unexplained recovery by sealing off the shrine, then joined Izuna in the retaliatory destruction of the Kaguya Clan 13.
As clan head, Madara favored training and battlefield leadership over administration. He transferred the Uchiha’s paperwork and acting leadership to Yuan, trusting neither Izuna nor other clansmen with the role 16. He remained politically independent, rejecting the Land of Fire Daimyo’s proposal that the Uchiha become state-controlled ninja and inadvertently helping trigger broader suspicion of the clan 37.
A coalition ambush led by the Senju shattered Madara’s trust in Hashirama and drove him to escalate their battle with Susanoo 41. Later, he abandoned his duel with Hashirama to save the mortally wounded Izuna, then accepted Izuna’s eyes after his death and awakened the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 48 50.
Following Konoha’s foundation, Madara showed no interest in becoming Hokage and eventually left the village in secret 55 59. He later subdued the Nine-Tails, used it as a weapon against Konoha, and fought Hashirama at the Valley of the End 73 75. His apparent death was part of a concealed plan; Yuan discovered that he was alive and agreed to protect the deception 76.
Madara was eventually deceived by Black Zetsu and overpowered shortly before awakening the Rinnegan, losing both his life and eyes in the process 147. Yuan later resurrected him at the former Naka Shrine with the Reanimation Technique and Outer Path—Samsara Tensei, returning his Rinnegan afterward 147. Although he initially still wished to attempt a Ten-Tails fusion, he later chose to remain with Yuan and train Izuna instead 147 149.
Appearance
Madara is recognized by his spiky, extremely long dark hair, stern expression, and crimson Warring States armor. After resurrection, he initially returned in his old armor before changing into modern black clothing; his hair was long enough to drag across the floor 59 147 149.
- Crimson or red Uchiha battle armor 19 147
- Large Uchiha war fan and a long scythe carried on his back 59
- Mangekyō Sharingan, later Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan 50 147
- A severe, intimidating presence capable of frightening the Daimyo without physical violence 37
Personality
Madara is stern, proud, and intensely competitive, particularly where Hashirama is concerned. He resents being held back by administration and measures himself constantly against Hashirama’s growth, which is why he placed Yuan in charge of clan affairs 16. He also values independence absolutely; the prospect of an ordinary Daimyo directing the Uchiha provoked open contempt from him 37.
Behind his harsh demeanor, Madara is deeply protective of his brothers. He worried over Yuan’s injuries, supplied him with training notes and scrolls, guarded his recovery, and trusted him with defending the clan home 7 13 47. Izuna’s injury and death affected him profoundly; he abandoned combat to protect Izuna and accepted the Eternal Mangekyō only with grief over its cost 48 50.
In later life, Madara proves more adaptable than his reputation suggests. He quickly grasps modern technology, becomes absorbed in criminal law, enjoys Yuan’s cooking and wine, and develops affection for his descendant Hikari 148 149.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Madara’s ocular power grants him formidable chakra, perception, and combat capacity. His Mangekyō Sharingan is the basis of his most destructive techniques, though prolonged high-output use damages his eyesight.
- Awakened the Mangekyō amid catastrophic clan losses 12
- Uses Mangekyō-enhanced chakra to sustain enormous Susanoo forms 19
- Suffers optic pain and bleeding while fighting Hashirama at full output 19 48
- Evolved to the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan through Izuna’s eye transplant, eliminating his former blindness problem through self-repairing eyes 50
Susanoo
Madara can manifest progressively stronger Susanoo forms, from colossal armored warriors to a complete winged construct.
- Third-stage form was described as an approximately 800-meter azure warrior armed with twin blades 19
- Strengthened it into a winged armored form capable of slicing through a mountain during the coalition war 41
- Used a complete Susanoo against Mu; it endured long enough to give Madara time to evade Dust Release, then repaired itself afterward 59
- Used Susanoo to effortlessly suppress the Nine-Tails before placing it under ocular control 73
Fire Release
Madara is a high-level Fire Release user capable of overwhelming large numbers of opponents and matching elite shinobi.
- Used Fire Release to overpower Mu’s Earth Release during their encounter outside Konoha 59
- Can destroy Yuan’s clone formations with Fire Release: Overblaze Wind 24
- Fought Hashirama with Fire Release before escalating to Susanoo 1 47
Uchiha War Fan
Madara’s war fan is both a signature weapon and a countermeasure against powerful ninjutsu.
- Carried alongside a long scythe while traveling outside Konoha 59
- Deflected Mu’s Atomic Dismantling Jutsu with a technique he named Uchiha—Rebound 59
Nine-Tails Control
Madara can dominate the Nine-Tails through Susanoo and Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu.
- Defeated the beast after the Raikage’s forces had failed to restrain it 73
- Forced it into obedience through ocular control despite its continued resistance 73
- Rode the Nine-Tails toward Konoha and commanded it to fire Tailed Beast Bombs 73 75
Rinnegan
Madara possessed the Rinnegan before his death and recovered it after Yuan resurrected him.

- Long scythe — Carried alongside the fan while traveling beyond Konoha 59
- Crimson Warring States armor — His traditional combat attire; later regarded as an antique in the modern era 19 149
Relationships
- Uchiha Tajima — Father and former Uchiha Clan Head. Madara succeeded him after Tajima died fighting Senju Butsuma 12.
- Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother, closest battlefield partner, and eventual donor of Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Madara repeatedly prioritized Izuna’s life over his conflict with Hashirama 13 48 50.
- Uchiha Yuan — Younger brother and trusted administrator. Madara supplied Yuan’s training materials, entrusted him with clan duties, accepted his help in concealing the fake death, and was later resurrected by him 7 16 76 147.
- Senju Hashirama — Rival, equal, and intermittent political partner. Their friendship repeatedly clashes with their responsibilities as clan leaders, culminating in the Nine-Tails assault and Valley of the End battle 1 12 41 75.
- Senju Tobirama — Hostile rival responsible for the deaths or injuries of Madara’s brothers. Madara views Tobirama as a threat to both the Uchiha and any future peace 2 48.
- Black Zetsu — Hidden manipulator who altered the Uchiha stone tablet and deceived Madara into pursuing a false path 76 147.
- Hikari — Descendant who calls Madara “Great-Grandpa”; her greeting quickly earns his affection 149.
Major Arcs
Uchiha Clan Head
Following Tajima’s death, Madara assumed command of the Uchiha alongside Hashirama’s succession of the Senju. He directed the clan’s recovery, shielded Yuan’s healing, and led the revenge campaign against the Kaguya Clan with Izuna 12 13.
Coalition War and Izuna’s Death
Madara led two thousand Uchiha into a prepared coalition ambush and interpreted Hashirama’s presence as betrayal. The ensuing war devastated the Uchiha, while the later battle with the Senju led to Izuna’s fatal injury by Tobirama 41 48 49.
Eternal Mangekyō and Konoha
After receiving Izuna’s eyes, Madara awakened the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. He supported the Uchiha–Senju alliance but rejected both the Hokage position and the prospect of being politically subordinate within Konoha 50 55.
Nine-Tails Assault and False Death
After departing Konoha, Madara subdued the Nine-Tails and attacked the village, leading to his battle with Hashirama at the Valley of the End 73 75. He survived by faking his death, then pursued a secret plan while Yuan investigated the altered Uchiha stone tablet 76.
Resurrection and Return Home
Yuan resurrected Madara and restored his Rinnegan, reuniting him with Yuan and Izuna after decades apart 147. Exposure to the modern world, his family, and Yuan’s peaceful society ultimately led Madara to set aside his Ten-Tails plan and mentor Izuna instead 148 149.
