Background / History
Galactus was born near the beginning of the universe and spent billions of years consuming planetary essence, stellar energy, and civilizations. His devouring also served a cosmic function: clearing exhausted stars and systems as part of the universe’s cycle of renewal 569 576.
After Loren killed a Celestial Judge, the Celestials gave Galactus Earth’s coordinates to retaliate without confronting Loren themselves. Drawn by Earth’s unusual concentration of energy and potential, Galactus sent his herald, Silver Surfer, to eliminate its defenders before he descended to consume it 569 570.
Silver Surfer instead abandoned the mission. Galactus attacked Earth, but Loren bound his Destruction Origin with Temporal Order, inflicted a difficult-to-heal wound through causal backlash, and expelled him from the Solar System. Loren chose not to kill him then because removing his cosmic function without a replacement could destabilize the universe 572 573 574.
Galactus hid in a dead starfield and rapidly recovered by devouring its energy. When Loren returned with Spiral Power, he broke the laws protecting Galactus’s origin. Loren then erased him and used Spiral Power to assume his balancing function, preventing the cosmic backlash he had previously feared 588 592 593.
Appearance
Galactus manifests on an immense scale rather than as an ordinary physical celestial body 573.
- At the Solar System, he appears as a phantom billions of meters tall, formed from dark-purple void barriers and surrounded by black-hole fissures 573.
- His eyes resemble stellar remnants burning with white flames 573.
- While recovering, he appears as a star-sized humanoid figure wreathed in black flames of destruction 592.
Personality
Galactus treats the destruction of worlds as both sustenance and cosmic duty. He dismisses resistance as insignificant and condemns Silver Surfer’s decision to protect Earth as a betrayal of the order Galactus believes he represents 573 574.
Loren’s ability to injure his origin changes that certainty. Galactus withdraws rather than risk losing more of his foundation, but retains his grudge against Earth. When Spiral Power later threatens the rules sustaining him, his anger gives way to fear 574 592.
Abilities & Skills
Cosmic Devouring
- Consumes planetary essence, stellar energy, and the vitality of civilizations 569.
- Replenishes his damaged origin by draining abandoned planets, asteroid fields, and barren star regions 588 592.
Destruction and Oblivion
- Wields Destruction Origin and Devouring Power; his giant hand of Oblivion threatens to erase matter, life, energy, laws, and spacetime in its path 573.
- His arrival alone disrupts planetary orbits and causes storms, earthquakes, and tsunamis on Earth 573.
Cosmic Origin and Recovery
- His connection to cosmic balance protects his core origin from conventional energy attacks and sustains his recovery 574 592.
- Temporal causality can wound that origin; Loren’s evolved Spiral Power later severs the rules and universal connection sustaining it 574 592 593.
Relationships
- Silver Surfer / Norrin Radd — Former herald empowered to find worlds for Galactus to consume. Norrin renounces him to defend Earth, and Loren later breaks their contract 369 573 575.
- Loren Morgan — Defender of Earth who first wounds and expels Galactus, then returns to erase him and replace his cosmic balancing function 574 592 593.
- The Celestials — Give Galactus Earth’s location as an indirect means of avenging the Judge’s death 569.
