Steve Rogers felt his blood, in this instant, seem to freeze into ice, and then in the next second, be completely ignited by magma from deep within the earth's core.
It was an extreme cold combined with an extreme, violent fury.
He watched with his own eyes as the oriental soldier who had just been fighting shoulder to shoulder with him, clearing countless obstacles for him with pinpoint marksmanship, was savagely pierced through the body by the enemy's venom-dripping saber in order to push him out of the way.
At that moment, time seemed to slow down.
He could clearly see a trace of bewilderment and pain flash across Chu Hang's face, see blood overflow from the corner of his mouth, and see the light in his eyes rapidly fading.
This soldier named Chu Hang—he had just remembered this name. He was brave, calm, possessing a tactical mind and battlefield intuition far beyond his years. Steve had even begun to consider him in his heart as the most trustworthy comrade-in-arms he had in this squad.
Yet now, this comrade had fallen before his eyes to save him.
"No—!"
A suppressed, ultimate roar burst from the depths of Captain America's throat. His bright blue eyes were, at this moment, flooded with an alarming bloodshot hue.
If the previous battle had still retained a soldier's reason and tactics, then now, only a single thought remained in his mind.
Kill the bastard in front of him! In the most cruel, direct way!
The Hydra soldier with the codename Hound, after stabbing Chu Hang, wore a look of morbid ecstasy on his face. He had failed to kill Captain America, but managing to wipe out an important helper by his side was enough to satisfy him.
He didn't even have time to pull out his blade, wanting instead to kick Chu Hang's corpse away to buy himself a moment to catch his breath.
"Whoosh—!"
Responding to him was a red, white, and blue residual blur carrying a piercing shriek through the air.
Steve did not even perform any superfluous movements; he simply poured all of his pent-up fury into his right arm, using all his strength to hurl the Vibranium Shield in his hand sideways like a heavy brick!
Hound's pupils abruptly shrank to the size of needlepoints.
He only felt a blur before his eyes, and an irresistible, terrifying force akin to a battering ram smashed solidly against the side of his face.
"Crack!"
A teeth-setting sound of fracturing bone rang out.
Hound's head bent toward the other side at a completely unnatural angle. The ecstasy on his face instantly froze, replaced by an extreme horror and disbelief.
He couldn't even emit a single scream as his entire body, like a sack with its bones removed, flew sideways limply, slammed heavily into a hard rock in the distance with a thud, and then slid down, making no further movement whatsoever.
One-hit kill!
A single strike! Just a single strike!
This Hydra elite who had just gone blow-for-blow with Captain America and displayed super-soldier qualities was thus thoroughly dealt with.
But Steve didn't even look at him.
The moment the shield left his hand, he had already turned around, rushing to Chu Hang's side in a single bound, carefully and gently supporting his falling body.
"Chu Hang! Hang on! Chu Hang!" Steve's voice carried a trembling and urgency that even he hadn't noticed.
He laid Chu Hang flat on the ground, intending to bandage him.
Yet just as Steve prepared to tear his own clothing and attempt some futile hemostatic measures, he suddenly froze.
When his gaze fell upon that wound on his abdomen that had been ferocious just a moment ago.
It had actually healed; the wound was completely invisible.
What... what is this situation?
Steve's mind went buzz, turning completely blank. He even subconsciously rubbed his eyes, thinking he was hallucinating due to mental stress.
Yet this was no hallucination!
That wound had healed!
Just as he was beyond measure shocked, Chu Hang lying on the ground let out a painful groan, his eyelids twitched, and he actually slowly opened his eyes.
It hurts!
It fucking hurts!
This was Chu Hang's first thought after regaining consciousness.
He felt as though someone was stirring back and forth inside his stomach with a red-hot iron rod, and that bone-deep, excruciating pain almost made him faint again.
Yet beneath this excruciating pain, he also sensed a different kind of sensation.
It was a warm, power-filled feeling like a surging river. This warm current was welling up from the deepest part of his body, flowing through all his limbs and bones, nourishing every parched cell of his.
He could clearly feel every part of his body undergoing earth-shattering changes. His muscles were becoming tougher.
His bones were becoming denser. His blood seemed to flow with much more vigor.
Was this the power of the Super-Soldier Serum?
Chu Hang couldn't help but let out a satisfied sigh of contentment in his heart. Although the process was a bit painful, the result felt fucking amazing! The Healing Factor was responsible for treating injuries, and the Super-Soldier Serum was responsible for enhancement; these two abilities were simply a match made in heaven!
"Chu Hang? How... how are you feeling?"
Steve's voice, carrying a hint of uncertainty and shock, rang in his ear.
Chu Hang turned his head with difficulty and saw Captain America's bewildered face, which was plastered all over with Who am I, where am I, what did I just see?
He instantly felt amused inside. Let you be knowledgeable, let you be the chosen one, you've never seen someone come back from the dead right in front of you, have you?
Yet on his face, he appropriately revealed an expression of weakness, confusion, and pain.
"It hurts... Sir... Am I... dead?" Chu Hang's voice was as hoarse as a broken gong, his acting skills rivaling an Oscar-winning actor.
"You're not dead!" Steve replied subconsciously, but then immediately realized something was wrong. He pointed at Chu Hang's stomach, his voice even stuttering slightly, "Your wound... your wound, it..."
Chu Hang lowered his head following his gaze to find that the saber was still stuck in his stomach, but the surrounding wound had already healed by more than half, leaving only a ring of ferocious red scars.
He secretly thought to himself, Holy crap, this Healing Factor is way too overpowered, while continuing to play dumb on the outside.
"I... I don't know... I've always been... tougher than others since I was a kid..." Chu Hang said as he reached out a trembling hand to grip the hilt of the knife, and then, under Steve's horrified gaze, he gritted his teeth and yanked the saber out in one hard pull!
"Splash!"
A spray of fresh blood jetted out once again!
"What are you doing!" Steve was startled and quickly reached out to press on it.
Yet in the next second, both he and Chu Hang froze.
They saw that the extracted knife wound, after spraying a gush of blood, actually shrank and closed at a speed several times faster than before! In almost the blink of an eye, not even a mark could be seen!
Chu Hang was also dumbfounded. He could sense that it was the newly born power belonging to the Super-Soldier Serum that had accelerated this process! These two powers had actually truly generated a marvelous chemical reaction!
Steve looked at that smooth skin and then at the fresh blood staining his own hands, completely losing his mind. He opened his mouth, unable to utter a single word for a long time. His worldview, built upon science and common sense, was battered into smithereens at this moment.
Just as the two of them were staring at each other with wide eyes in an awkward and bizarre atmosphere, a flurry of chaotic footsteps and shouts came from the mountain forest not far away.
"This way! The gunshots came from over here!"
"Quick! Keep up!"
It was the Howling Commandos! They had finally arrived!
Soon, Dugan, Logan, and several other team members rushed out from the forest. When they saw the slaughterhouse-like scene before them, along with Steve and Chu Hang standing amidst a sea of corpses, everyone froze.
Logan's nose sniffed hard in the air, his beast-like intuition making him sense that something was wrong in an instant. He first glanced at the miserably dead Hound, and then locked his gaze firmly onto Chu Hang.
In the air, besides the heavy scent of blood, he also smelled... a newly born, powerful scent that was somewhat similar to the captain's, yet entirely different.
"Good job, Captain!" Dugan broke the silence first, glancing at the surrounding corpses and praising sincerely. Then he looked back at Chu Hang and Gabe, "You two boys have nine lives!"
Steve didn't answer; he merely gave Chu Hang a deep look, his gaze complex to the extreme. There was gratitude, shock, confusion, but more than anything, a recognition akin to looking at one of his own kind.
He stepped forward, bent down, and pulled Chu Hang—whose legs were still somewhat weak—up from the ground with a single heave.
Then, he extended his thick, powerful hand and heavily patted Chu Hang's shoulder.
"Welcome back to the team, soldier."
