History

Hydra is identified by Dum Dum Dugan as the Allies’ true enemy: a technologically superior German division commanded by Johann Schmidt, the Red Skull. Its blue energy weapons can vaporize ordinary soldiers instantly, forcing the newly formed Howling Commandos to rely on infiltration and unconventional warfare. 3

During the Klausberg operation, Chu Hang’s scattered unit unknowingly lands within the security perimeter of a secret Hydra base. After killing a patrol, he recognizes the organization from its skull-and-tentacle insignia and discovers that the base is protected by patrol routes, tracking units, military dogs, and deliberately falsified maps intended to mislead escapees. 7 8 12

Hydra deploys the elite tracker known as the Hound to hunt Chu Hang and Gabe Jones. Its forces also surround Captain America on the western ridge, intending to capture him alive for Red Skull. 13 16

The Howling Commandos later infiltrate Hydra’s Austrian factory through a drainage outlet, disable its defenses, and uncover a hidden laboratory containing a massive biomechanical experiment. The experiment escapes containment during the assault; Steve, Chu Hang, and Logan trigger Plan B by destroying the factory’s electrical system and escape as the facility collapses. 24 27 28 29 30

Despite the factory’s destruction and the rescue of its prisoners, Hydra remains operational. It later encircles the Commandos with at least two battalions, Tiger tanks, energy weapons, and surveillance equipment. By early 1945, Red Skull activates Valkyrie, a Cosmic Cube-powered bomber intended to strike major cities on the United States East Coast. 45 47 48 50

Military Doctrine

• Uses overwhelming firepower, fortified positions, patrol networks, and deception rather than conventional German military methods. 3 7 12
