Ch. 241The Royal Court Chronomancer's Moves: Nested Prophecies and Rewinds

Plot points and events

  • Lahkhoz, the Suhabel Dynasty’s chronomancer, discovers that powerful opponents can counter his attempts to alter events involving the Maelstrom Alliance. He cannot simply erase their Crusade Fleet from history, and even lesser interference fails to harm it.
  • Seeking help, he confronts Grand Vizier Ilimanok about secretly awakening Tomb Worlds and undermining Lord Regent Ahotek’s bid to seize control of the dynasty. Rather than expose him, Lahkhoz orders Ilimanok to lead his private forces against an approaching enemy.
  • Lahkhoz secretly reinforces Ilimanok by awakening more than a dozen Tomb Worlds and placing their armies under his command. Ilimanok mistakes this aid for proof of Lahkhoz’s extraordinary foresight.
  • The Crusade Fleet encounters an enormous Warp Rift, apparently sprung as a trap. Valens uses the fleet’s psyker field, strengthened by a Light of Hope device and Emperor Chan’s blessing, to rescue the fleet, purify the invading Chaos forces, and close the rift. A nearby Defense Fleet then arrives to repair the damaged reality veil.
  • At the next Tomb World, the Alliance discovers that the Necrons are awake and waiting with a large army and fleet. The Crusade Fleet chooses a direct decisive battle, reasoning that ordinary tactics are futile against an enemy with comparable prophetic abilities.
  • Before the fleets even reach firing range, both sides maneuver repeatedly in response to predictions of the other’s moves. Their competing prophecies and rewinds produce an absurd-looking standoff, with neither side willing to act without first countering the other’s forecast.

Character developments and interactions

  • Lahkhoz is powerful but not omnipotent. He hides the limits of his abilities to preserve his exalted standing, and uses Ilimanok as a proxy rather than risk revealing his weakness.
  • Ilimanok, a politically isolated but secretly ambitious vizier, is coerced into helping Lahkhoz. He accepts the order and benefits from Lahkhoz’s unexpected military support, interpreting it as evidence of the chronomancer’s insight.
  • Valens demonstrates the strength of his personal domain, turning the fleet’s psychic defenses into an effective counter to the Warp Rift and its entities.
  • The Crusade Fleet’s Prophecy Unit and Lahkhoz’s side engage in an escalating contest of foresight, each anticipating and countering the other before combat begins.

Significant themes

  • Limits of power: Even control over time has boundaries when opposing forces can intervene.
  • Political intrigue: The Necrons’ rivalries over authority mirror the scheming of the races they look down on.
  • Faith in prediction: Both forces trust their respective systems of prophecy so completely that they obey forecasts before anything happens.
  • Absurdity of strategic stalemate: Perfect foresight does not produce certainty; it creates an endless loop of counter-prediction and maneuvering.

Ch. 242The Necrons annihilated, Shards of the C'tan

The Alliance's Crusade Fleet annihilated Ilimanok and Lahkhoz's Necron fleet, then swept through the Suhabel Dynasty's Tomb Worlds. With the dynasty facing destruction, Lord Regent Ahotek rejected proposals to awaken Phaeron Amontek or seek the Silent King's help and authorized the deployment of two Shards of the C'tan.

  • Lahkhoz warned Ilimanok that the Crusade Fleet was about to attack, while both Necrons privately plotted against each other.
  • Vanessa's fleet teleported Supernova Cannon shots into the Necron formation, then used expendable Drones to clear a path as the fleets closed in.
  • The Alliance unleashed its full psyker field, teleported over a billion Combat Citizens aboard Necron ships, and destroyed or captured the fleet within hours.
  • Resurrected Combat Citizens fought challengers to regain combat eligibility, while the Alliance advanced through the Suhabel Dynasty's Tomb Worlds and destroyed more than a dozen.
  • Lahkhoz and Ilimanok reported the defeat to Lord Regent Ahotek, who argued with them over their failure to warn him sooner.
  • Ahotek and Archivist Ozakhan refused to awaken Phaeron Amontek or contact the Silent King, then agreed to activate the dynasty's two Tesseract Labyrinths and deploy its Shards of the C'tan.

Ch. 243Overwhelming the Battlefield

The Suhabel Dynasty deployed the Shards of the C'tan to ambush the Crusade Fleet, but Huron and the Alliance's lesser gods intervened and turned the battle against them. Huron took control of the battlefield and severed the Necrons' connection to their Tesseract Labyrinths, leaving Lord Regent Ahotek unable to retreat or command the Shards.

  • Ozakhan teleported the Suhabel Dynasty's fleet to the Crusade Fleet and used the Unbound to scatter two billion enemy warships across other dimensions.
  • Ozakhan unleashed the Burning One's flames, but the Crusade Fleet's ritual shields channeled the heat into the Tower of Babel Domain, where Huron converted it into matter.
  • Huron, Vanessa, and Liam arrived with a vast force of psychic manifestations, restored the Crusade Fleet to realspace, and extinguished the flames.
  • Huron reassured Corian that the Crusade Fleet had succeeded in drawing out the Shards of the C'tan.
  • Lord Regent Ahotek ordered Ozakhan to retreat, but Ozakhan revealed that the Unbound had lost control of space and the Tesseract Labyrinths.
  • Huron severed the Necrons' control of the Tesseract Labyrinths by casting them into a Warp environment, trapping the Suhabel Dynasty's forces under his command of the battlefield.

Ch. 244Vanessa, the New Phaeron

Huron seized the Suhabel Dynasty’s Throne World, and Vanessa extracted its master control protocol, becoming the dynasty’s new Phaeron. With the Necrons forced to surrender their technology to the Alliance, Huron turned to the imprisoned Shards of the C’tan and offered them freedom.

  • Huron captured two Shards of the C’tan and made Lord Regent Ahotek, Ilimanok, Lahkhoz, and the other Necron nobles surrender, while Ozakhan remained loyal to the Phaeron.
  • Ahotek and Ilimanok explained that the Necrontyr had fought the Old Ones because they refused to help them and because their long lifespans inspired envy.
  • The Alliance followed the Necron guides to the Throne World, and Huron used The Unbound to draw its hidden structure into realspace.
  • Vanessa took control of the Throne World and extracted the master control protocol, killing Phaeron Amontek and becoming the Suhabel Dynasty’s new Phaeron.
  • Vanessa ordered the Necrons to deliver their technology and research to the Alliance, while Huron studied The Burning One and The Unbound in their Tesseract Labyrinths.
  • Huron asked the two imprisoned Shards of the C’tan whether they wanted their freedom back, and they turned toward him.

Ch. 245The C'tan were shit, and Guilliman was getting ready to wake up

Huron rejected cooperation with the treacherous C'tan shards, instead assigning them uses while planning to integrate their powers into his Tower of Babel Domain. Meanwhile, Vanessa organized the Suhabel Dynasty’s expansion, and an Alliance fleet arrived at Macragge to awaken Roboute Guilliman before a vast crowd of Alliance citizens.

  • Huron freed The Burning One, discovered its plan to betray him, and kept the shard in his domain as an energy source while sending The Unbound to help repair the reality veil.
  • Huron considered incorporating C'tan authority into his Tower of Babel Domain to make it operate and resist the Warp more autonomously.
  • Vanessa ordered the Suhabel Dynasty to absorb smaller Necron dynasties and Tomb Worlds, while Liam took charge of restoring Necrons’ memories after resurrection.
  • Emperor Chan accompanied the Alliance fleet to Macragge, where Calgar and the Ultramarines prepared to welcome the visitors and awaken Roboute Guilliman.
  • The Alliance fleet arrived above Macragge with so many citizens that their Psyker Power nearly blotted out the star.

Ch. 246Guilliman: "That's my boy!"

Odinson and the Alliance representatives helped Calgar awaken Roboute Guilliman, whose wound was healed by golden fire. Learning that he had slept for over ten thousand years and that the Imperium was ruled by the High Lords, Guilliman took heart from the Ultramarines’ strength before asking what the Alliance was.

  • Odinson told Calgar that the visitors were representatives of the Alliance, and the group went to the Primarch Sanctuary to awaken Guilliman.
  • Archbishop Damien prayed, and golden fire burned away Fulgrim’s corruption and healed Guilliman’s wound as he awoke.
  • Calgar told Guilliman that it was 897.M41 and that his brothers had disappeared, leaving the High Lords to rule the Imperium.
  • Guilliman learned that the Ultramarines still followed the Codex Astartes but had grown to over eighty thousand, with the ability to expand to two hundred and fifty thousand.
  • Calgar explained that the Alliance supported the Ultramarines’ growth, and Guilliman asked what the Alliance was.
