Luo Yan was crossing his arms, walking behind with a gloomy look on his face.
The two girls ahead walked closer and closer. Although Ning Rongrong's skirt was torn, she was still livelier with her mouth than she had been in Suotuo City.
She pulled Zhu Zhuqing to ask about this and that, asking what Star Luo Empire was like, what the Hell Spirit Cat usually ate, and whether Zhu Zhuqing had ever stolen bird eggs when she was little.
At first, Zhu Zhuqing only said "uh", "right", and "I don't know", but Ning Rongrong was the kind of person who could grind even ice cubes into lukewarm water.
Following behind and listening to them chat about tree bark and mushrooms, Luo Yan felt like an old rag thrown by the roadside.
Fine.
He muttered under his breath, You guys are great, you go ahead and chat, I'll go talk to the mushrooms myself.
He squatted down, picked a mushroom, and looked at it.
"Don't pick that," Zhu Zhuqing suddenly said.
"I didn't pick it." Luo Yan put his hand behind his back.
"That one is poisonous."
"I was just looking."
Ning Rongrong let out a laugh, and Luo Yan opened his mouth to retort, but suddenly stopped.
A low beast roar exploded from deep within the woods, followed by bushes being shoved aside. An off-white shadow wrapped in wind lunged straight toward the three of them.
That thing was extremely fast. Its four paws hit the ground, and its tail dragged three long shadows behind it—a thousand-year-old Three-Tailed Fox.
It was carrying injuries on its body; there was an extremely deep claw mark on its hind leg, and blood was still dripping down, but its eyes were red.
A wounded Spirit Beast was fiercer than usual. Seeing people ahead, it didn't even hesitate, let out a low growl, and pounced directly at the nearest Ning Rongrong.
"Step back." Luo Yan's voice wasn't loud, but it was faster than Ning Rongrong's reaction.
He took a step and crossed in front of Ning Rongrong, his entire person leaping into the air. His body twisted half a turn mid-air, executing a spinning roundhouse kick, and his right heel accurately smashed into the side of the Three-Tailed Fox's waist.
Bang!
The Three-Tailed Fox flew sideways for several yards, slamming into an old tree trunk. The tree trunk shook, and a few withered leaves drifted down.
The Three-Tailed Fox rolled on the ground, twitched twice, and didn't get up again. It was still breathing, but the injury was too heavy.
Luo Yan landed, his feet turning as he already stood in front of Ning Rongrong.
He lowered his head to look at his own foot, then looked up at that fox.
"A thousand-year Spirit Beast?" He raised an eyebrow. "This fox runs pretty fast, it just can't take a kick."
Zhu Zhuqing had already stepped forward. She half-squatted down to check the Three-Tailed Fox's injuries; the claw mark on the hind leg was very deep, and the bones on the side of its waist had been broken by Luo Yan's strike.
She reached out to probe the pulse under the fox's neck. It was still beating.
"Not dead," she said, "but it won't last long."
"Six thousand years... good enough, actually usable too," Luo Yan said.
Before he finished speaking, extremely fast footsteps came from the other side of the woods.
Three people. The woman leading the group had a head of red hair and a gorgeous face, with two yellow Spirit Rings rotating at her feet. She was followed by two men—one short and stocky, the other tall and thin. All three wore Spirit Hall standard casual clothes, with golden badges embroidered on their cuffs.
The leading woman caught sight of the Three-Tailed Fox lying on the ground, her expression sinking first before sweeping across Luo Yan and the other two.
The short and stocky man had already rushed out. His hair was fiery red, and his face was red too.
Seeing the Three-Tailed Fox collapsed on the ground, and then seeing Zhu Zhuqing half-squatting beside the fox with her hand resting on its body, his eyes instantly turned red.
"You guys—!"
His Martial Soul possessed him instantly, flames surging out from his limbs and wrapping around his entire body as he charged straight toward Zhu Zhuqing.
He didn't ask anything at all, nor did he listen to anyone speak. He only saw the Spirit Beast he had chased the entire way get beaten by someone, and even touched by someone's hand.
"Stop!" the woman shouted from behind. But the man could no longer hear.
Luo Yan didn't dodge. He turned his head sideways, glancing at the woman with a very brief look to confirm who she was.
Gray fog "whooshed" up from the soles of his feet. With just a swirl and a disperse, by the time the man rushed within three steps, the person in front of him was no longer Luo Yan.
It was that woman.
An identical face, identical red hair, and that identical lazy, nonchalant coldness. The angle at which she tilted her head was even completely identical to the woman's just now.
The man was as if poured over from head to toe with a bucket of ice water. He abruptly slammed on the brakes, pulling back his Soul Power violently. He was far too familiar with this face, familiar to the point that his body stopped before his brain did.
He opened his mouth, squeezing a single "You" out from his throat.
The time of just that one word was enough.
The "woman" raised her left foot, clean and decisive, delivering a front kick straight into the man's chest.
Bang!
Yan flew backward, colliding with the tall, thin man's shoulder, and the two of them tumbled into the bushes together.
The man lay on the ground, clutching his chest, staring wide-eyed at that "woman". The expression on his face was more colorful than if he had been struck by lightning.
The woman herself, standing a few steps away, was also stunned. She only watched as another version of herself stood there, head tilted, curving the corners of her mouth toward her.
"Thanks."
Luo Yan's voice came out from that face belonging to the red-haired woman, carrying a hint of a smile. "Your teammate is even dumber than I thought."
"What kind of people are you?"
"Spirit Hall is on official business," the thin man spoke, his voice not loud, but carrying a matter-of-fact oppression. "You snatched the prey we've been tracking for three days. How do we settle this account?"
Luo Yan tilted his head.
"You've been tracking it for three days?"
He pointed at the Three-Tailed Fox. "The wound on its hind leg is your doing?"
"Yes," the thin man said. "We tracked it for three days and it was just about to be ours, but you guys had it good, picking up free scraps. Do you know who we are?"
Luo Yan's gaze swept over them one by one—Spirit Hall, Hu Liena, Xie Yue, Yan, the so-called Golden Generation.
"I don't know, and it doesn't matter."
Yan bounced up from the bushes, his face already burned to a fiery red.
"Bastard, you're asking to die!"
He roared furiously, his arms abruptly spreading wide as flames exploded from his limbs.
His First Spirit Ring lit up, and a blazing pillar of fire spewed out from his palm, sweeping straight toward Luo Yan.
"The Seven Treasures is famous—first is Power! Second is Speed!"
Ning Rongrong reacted extremely fast. The Seven Treasures Glazed Pagoda rotated in her palm, and two rays of light shot out almost simultaneously—one landing on Zhu Zhuqing, and the other landing at her own feet.
Zhu Zhuqing's entire body seemed lifted from the ground by a force, and with a tap of her feet, she had already shifted sideways in front of Ning Rongrong.
She sidestepped to avoid the direct hit, her sharp claws extending to carve an opening along the edge of the pillar of fire.
The scorching heat wave brushed past her arm, instantly scorching her sleeves black.
She let out a muffled grunt, forcefully cleaving that pillar of fire down the middle to leave a gap of breathing room behind her.
Xie Yue stood in the distance, watching coldly. "The Hell Spirit Cat, truly quite interesting."
Still wearing Hu Liena's face, Luo Yan didn't dodge. The pillar of fire grazed past his side, singeing a few strands of red hair. He lowered his head to look at those charred strands, then raised his gaze to look at Yan.
"Are you done hitting?" he asked. His voice was Hu Liena's, cold and languid.
Seeing "Hu Liena" standing right in front of him with flames still grasped in her hands, Yan stiffened all over once more. The feeling was bizarre to the extreme; he clearly knew that she was fake.
Yet his body simply refused to listen to commands. In front of this face, his Soul Power felt as though a switch had been pressed down by something.
Luo Yan tilted his head, and then, he closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, those eyes had changed—pink, an extremely, extremely faint pink.
At the same time, two Spirit Rings rose, a tail appeared behind him, and a ball of flame condensed.
Charm. Fox Fire.
