Bloodraven woke with a start.

Hah...

He let out a long, ragged breath. In the cave, even its echo sounded as faint and feeble as a dying man.

He had not had a Green Dream in a long time.

Greenseers and some exceptionally gifted people possessed Green Sight. At times, they saw metaphors and symbols in dreams that foretold the future.

They might not understand a dream at the time, but later events often proved it true.

This dream was just as hard to understand.

He dreamed he was trapped among countless pillars of flame. They twisted and danced, taking the shapes of wolves, stags, lions, fish, and more. Every face was furious and cold as the flames cursed him together for his schemes.

What does this mean?

Unease filled Bloodraven. These omens could mean nothing good. Did I dream of my own death?

If so, a Greenseer who had let go of worldly concerns ought to accept his fate gladly.

Bloodraven was not such a man.

He resolved to do everything he could to avert it. He had spent too much energy on The Wall lately. Something must have happened in the south. He needed to look.

Winterfell's Heart Tree had heard Robb Stark and many others speak of their troubles. The Usurper and the traitorous Grey Wolf were still on the road, and The North remained fairly calm.

But for a week now, the Heart Tree had stood utterly alone. No one approached it anymore. Why?
