Ch. 1Awakening

Plot points and events

  • In a mysterious palace above a sea of mist, an enigmatic figure tells a six- or seven-year-old boy that he has discovered one of God’s contingencies in the Chaos Sea. The boy confirms it represents an opportunity, and the figure decides to let the person involved awaken in a relatively safe world rather than release him directly. The boy mentions “The Hanged Man” before returning home.
  • An Chen wakes in Qingshi Village with the memories of both a 24-year-old office worker and a six-year-old village child. He realizes he has transmigrated into the world of Douluo Continent.
  • On the day village children awaken their Martial Souls, most receive ordinary farming tools or Blue Silver Grass, with no soul power. An Chen’s Martial Soul appears to be an ordinary iron pot—but he notices faint gray mist surrounding it.
  • Testing reveals that An Chen has innate full soul power, stunning the Spirit Hall deacon. The deacon invites him to join the Spirit Hall, and An Chen accepts, hoping to gain access to its resources.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen is initially disoriented by his merged memories but quickly assesses his new circumstances. Though villagers mock his iron-pot Martial Soul, he remains composed and notices the mysterious mist others overlook. His exceptional soul power changes him from an unremarkable village child into a promising recruit.
  • The Spirit Hall deacon begins the ceremony indifferent and disappointed by the children’s ordinary results. An Chen’s full soul power shocks him, prompting him to treat the boy seriously and offer him a place in the Spirit Hall.
  • An Chen’s foster parents, Li Fang and An Dashan, show their hope and support by preparing a special breakfast and taking him to the awakening ceremony.
  • The mysterious figure and the boy in the palace discuss a hidden contingency and arrange for someone to awaken in a safer setting; the boy’s reference to “The Hanged Man” hints at a larger connection not yet explained.

Significant themes

  • Destiny and hidden forces: The palace scene suggests An Chen’s awakening may be part of a much larger supernatural plan.
  • Appearance versus potential: An iron-pot Martial Soul seems ridiculous, but An Chen’s innate full soul power and the gray mist hint that its true nature may be more significant.
  • Opportunity and social mobility: For a poor village child, awakening and joining the Spirit Hall offer a rare chance to change his future.

Ch. 2Potion

Key plot points and events

  • An Chen awakens a Big Iron Pot Martial Soul with Innate Full Soul Power, making him the first Soul Master in Qingshi Village in more than a decade.
  • Spirit Hall deacon Wang Gang registers An Chen and offers him the village’s working-student place at Tieyan Junior Soul Master Academy. An Chen chooses to go despite his parents’ worries.
  • That night, An Chen discovers that saying “Start the pot” activates a system. It identifies his Martial Soul and Soul Power, and offers potion formulas, materials, divination attempts, and a meditation method as rewards for absorbing his first soul ring. The system’s “shielding” status remains unexplained.
  • Three days later, An Chen leaves the village with new clothes, food, and pooled silver from the villagers. Wang Gang escorts him to Tieyan City and explains Soul Master advancement.
  • At the academy, Elder Chen confirms An Chen’s talent and unusual Martial Soul. He promises to oversee his training and take him into the Soul Hunting Forest to obtain a soul ring. An Chen is assigned a dormitory bed and meets two other students.

Character developments

  • An Chen shows independence and determination: he willingly leaves home, conceals his knowledge as a transmigrator, and focuses quickly on obtaining a soul ring. The system’s arrival gives him a new, mysterious path to investigate.
  • An Dashan and Li Fang are proud but anxious about their young son leaving. They support his choice, prepare supplies, and give him affectionate advice.
  • Old Li, the village chief, is deeply moved by An Chen’s talent and helps him depart with the village’s good wishes and a small contribution.
  • Wang Gang acts as a practical guide, arranging An Chen’s placement and transport.
  • Elder Chen is enthusiastic about discovering a rare talent and personally takes responsibility for An Chen’s education.

Significant themes

  • Talent and opportunity: An Chen’s rare aptitude gives both him and his village hope for a better future.
  • Family and community support: His departure is made possible by his parents’ care and the villagers’ generosity.
  • Ambition and uncertainty: An Chen is eager to advance, but the system’s potions, attributes, and hidden status introduce unfamiliar possibilities.
  • Tradition and transition: The village’s farewell ritual contrasts with An Chen’s move toward the larger world of the city and Soul Master society.

Character interactions

  • Wang Gang reassures An Chen’s parents about the working-student arrangement and promises safe transport.
  • An Chen’s parents and Old Li offer emotional support and practical help as he leaves.
  • Wang Gang introduces An Chen to Elder Chen, who tests his Soul Power and examines the iron-pot Martial Soul.
  • At the dormitory, one student regards An Chen with curiosity, while another dismissively labels him “another working student,” hinting at possible tensions ahead.

Ch. 3Cafeteria Dispute

Plot points and events

  • An Chen meets his new roommates, Shitou and Qian Yiming. They joke about his Iron Pot Martial Soul, especially after he claims it has Innate Full Soul Power—something they find hard to believe.
  • The boys help An Chen make his bed. Shitou says he awakened with level-three Soul Power, while Qian Yiming boasts of level five.
  • The next morning, An Chen attends a basic Soul Master lesson with the other new students. He already knows much of the material and spends part of class considering what kind of Soul Ring would suit his Iron Pot.
  • At lunch, a student from the Wu Family insults Shitou and tries to kick him. An Chen pulls Shitou out of the way, causing the student to stumble. Before the fight can escalate, the dean of discipline intervenes and orders the aggressor to report his violation.
  • The dean then tells An Chen that Elder Chen wants to see him and arranges deluxe meals for him. An Chen sends Shitou back to the dormitory and meets Elder Chen.
  • An Chen explains that he is considering a wind- or Shadow-attribute Soul Ring so he can fight offensively. Elder Chen prefers a defensive ring but respects his choice, asking him to decide by the following morning, when they will hunt a Soul Beast together.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen remains quiet and composed, responding to the teasing without taking offense. He shows quick reflexes by protecting Shitou and increasingly clear independence in choosing his own combat style.
  • Shitou is outgoing and quick to tease, but he also helps An Chen settle in and becomes his friendly companion. He is easily provoked by the Wu Family student’s contempt.
  • Qian Yiming is proud of his level-five awakening and sensitive about his Kitchen Knife Martial Soul, though he joins in teasing An Chen.
  • Elder Chen acts as a mentor: he favors a defensive path for An Chen’s Iron Pot but listens seriously to An Chen’s reasoning and leaves the final choice to him.
  • The Wu Family student uses status to bully working students, while the dean’s intervention establishes that the school has rules—even if the bully’s threat leaves the conflict unresolved.

Significant themes

  • Prejudice and status: The Wu Family student looks down on working students, and the cafeteria’s two floors reflect the academy’s social divide.
  • Self-determination: An Chen considers a fighting style that suits his ambitions rather than accepting the obvious defensive role associated with an Iron Pot.
  • Underestimated potential: An Chen’s unusual Martial Soul and quiet manner lead others to doubt his claim of Innate Full Soul Power, while the dean’s attention hints that he may be more important than he appears.
  • Friendship and protection: Despite their teasing, the boys begin forming a bond, and An Chen acts to shield Shitou from harm.

Ch. 4Elder's Order!

Chapter Summary: “Elder’s Order!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • An Chen wakes early on the academy’s rest day and meets Elder Chen at the academy gate.
  • After discussing possible first soul rings, An Chen chooses a shadow-attribute soul beast, believing his current physical weakness makes wind, earth, or defense-based options less suitable.
  • Elder Chen secretly gives An Chen the Basic Meditation Cultivation Method, a superior technique associated with Grandmaster Yu Xiaogang. Although Spirit Hall officially rejects Yu Xiaogang’s theories because of political and personal conflicts, Elder Chen recognizes the method’s value and warns An Chen not to reveal it.
  • They travel to the Soul Hunting Forest, where they discover that the forest has been sealed because a millennium-level soul beast recently advanced to the ten-thousand-year level after consuming something unknown.
  • An Chen worries that Elder Chen, who appears to possess only Soul Ancestor-level strength, may be unable to face such a powerful beast. He suggests postponing the trip, showing caution and concern rather than recklessness.
  • Elder Chen reveals an Elder Token of Spirit Hall, proving that his status is much higher than An Chen previously realized. With the token, he gains permission to enter the forest and promises to remain in the safer outer ring.
  • Inside the forest, they encounter a forty-year iron-backed rabbit and an eighty-year shadow wolf, but neither is suitable for An Chen’s first soul ring.
  • Elder Chen discovers unusually large claw marks resembling those of a lizard, likely belonging to the mysterious ten-thousand-year soul beast. Its presence has frightened away most of the stronger soul beasts, making it difficult to find an appropriate target.

Character Developments

  • An Chen demonstrates independent judgment by choosing the shadow attribute according to his physical limitations and desired abilities.
  • He also reveals a practical and cautious personality when he questions whether entering a forest containing a ten-thousand-year soul beast is worth the risk.
  • An Chen learns that Elder Chen is far more influential within Spirit Hall than he had assumed.
  • Elder Chen acts as both mentor and protector. He respects An Chen’s decision, provides him with a powerful cultivation method, and uses his authority to secure access to the forest.
  • Elder Chen’s appreciation for Yu Xiaogang’s research shows that he is open-minded and willing to value useful knowledge despite Spirit Hall’s official opposition.
  • Their relationship develops through trust: Elder Chen shares a forbidden technique, while An Chen feels responsible enough to warn him about the danger.

Significant Themes

  • Practicality versus ambition: An Chen selects a soul beast attribute based on his current abilities rather than pursuing an idealized option.
  • Hidden knowledge and institutional conflict: The meditation method is useful despite being officially suppressed, highlighting the gap between political doctrine and genuine truth.
  • Caution in the face of danger: An Chen’s reluctance to confront an unknown ten-thousand-year beast emphasizes the importance of survival and careful preparation.
  • Status and hidden power: Elder Chen’s Elder Token reveals that appearances can conceal significant authority and influence.
  • The unpredictability of cultivation: The mysterious beast’s sudden breakthrough suggests that unknown forces or objects can radically alter a soul beast’s power.

Character Interactions

  • Elder Chen guides An Chen’s choice of soul-ring attribute while leaving the final decision to him.
  • He gives An Chen confidential instruction and warns him to keep it secret, strengthening their mentor-student bond.
  • An Chen expresses concern for Elder Chen’s safety, reversing the usual dynamic in which the elder simply protects the younger character.
  • Elder Chen teases An Chen for being afraid but ultimately accepts his caution and reassures him.
  • Zhou Ping initially blocks their entry but immediately changes his attitude after recognizing Elder Chen’s token, demonstrating Elder Chen’s authority within Spirit Hall.
  • Elder Chen evaluates each soul beast for An Chen and explains the forest’s structure, continuing his role as teacher and guide.

Ch. 5Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast

Key plot points and events

  • Elder Chen leads An Chen deeper into the forest despite the danger of a ten-thousand-year soul beast. They spot a roughly two-hundred-year Shadow Snake, which flees, and pursue it.
  • The chase brings them to a clearing where a mutated, ten-thousand-year Crystal Scale Basilisk appears. Elder Chen reveals his seven-ring cultivation and mutated Martial Soul, the Myriad Beasts Codex, which can summon recorded soul beasts.
  • Elder Chen conjures a thousand-year Stone Armor Bear to protect An Chen, then attacks the Basilisk. When it burrows underground, he summons a cyan bird and pursues it, leaving An Chen behind.
  • A Shadow Leopard ambushes An Chen. With the Stone Armor Bear shielding him, An Chen dodges the leopard’s attacks and uses his iron pot as a weapon. The bear’s blow creates an opening, and An Chen kills the leopard.
  • A yellow hundred-year Soul Ring rises from the corpse. An Chen, exhausted, stares at it and reflects on his unexpected victory.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen remains frightened by the forest’s dangers but acts resourcefully under pressure. He recalls what he knows about Shadow Leopards, uses the iron pot defensively, and takes advantage of the bear’s support to defeat one.
  • Elder Chen is revealed to be far more powerful and unusual than his genial professor persona suggested. He is eager to capture the rare Basilisk for his codex and entrusts An Chen’s safety to the Stone Armor Bear.
  • An Chen and Elder Chen share a brief exchange about the danger, but Elder Chen’s confidence outweighs An Chen’s fears. Once they encounter the Basilisk, their paths divide: Elder Chen pursues it while An Chen faces the ambush alone.
  • An Chen and the Shadow Leopard engage in a brief fight shaped by misjudgment: the leopard underestimates An Chen’s iron pot and is struck by the Stone Armor Bear.

Significant themes

  • Hidden strength and identity: Elder Chen’s humble appearance conceals formidable power, while An Chen proves more capable than his fearful circumstances suggest.
  • Improvisation and cooperation: An Chen survives through knowledge and quick thinking, but the Stone Armor Bear’s protection is crucial.
  • Risk and opportunity: The expedition’s danger brings the chance to encounter rare beasts—and leaves An Chen with a Soul Ring after an unexpected kill.

Ch. 6Black Fog

  • Elder Chen returns: He reports that the giant lizard is dead and discovers An Chen has killed the Shadow Leopard with help from the Stone Armor Bear. The beast’s roughly 400-year-old yellow Soul Ring is a suitable match for An Chen’s Shadow attribute.
  • An Chen gains his first Soul Ring: Following Elder Chen’s instructions, An Chen absorbs the ring. Its fierce mental attack is unexpectedly repelled by the gray fog around his Iron Pot Martial Soul. The absorption succeeds, raising his Soul Power to level 13 and granting him the first Soul Skill, Black Fog.
  • Black Fog’s abilities: The skill conceals An Chen, blocks vision, and weakens other people’s senses, while sharpening his own perception within the fog. It grows denser and spreads farther at night or in shadowed places. Elder Chen considers it an unusually versatile skill.
  • Return to the academy: Elder Chen advises An Chen to cultivate until level 20, register with Spirit Hall, and collect a monthly Soul Master subsidy. Back at the dormitory, An Chen gives Shitou and Qian Yiming only brief answers about his trip.
  • The system’s rewards: Unable to sleep, An Chen sneaks away at night and claims the reward for his completed mission. He receives a Secrets Suppliant Potion formula, four uses of Divination, and a Meditation Method for staying mentally clear after taking a potion.
  • A risky decision: An Chen uses the Iron Pot to brew the potion. Its eerie singing alarms him, so he traps the sound inside Black Fog while the ingredients melt. Despite the system’s warning that the potion could cause madness or loss of control, he drinks it.
Character developments and interactions: An Chen moves from cautious first-time Soul Ring user to someone willing to experiment with the mysterious system. Elder Chen acts as mentor, guiding the absorption and evaluating the new skill; the Stone Armor Bear silently confirms it did not kill the leopard. Shitou and Qian Yiming show eager curiosity, while An Chen keeps his deeper discoveries private.
Significant themes: The chapter contrasts established Soul Master cultivation with an unexplained potion-based system; explores the risks of power and experimentation; and emphasizes perception, concealment, and the boundary between control and madness.

Ch. 7Secrets Suppliant

Key plot points and events

  • After drinking the Sequence 9 Secrets Suppliant potion, An Chen becomes temporarily paralyzed and experiences shadowy visions and distant whispers. He uses the potion’s meditation method to regain control, then activates spirit vision, seeing his red Ether Body and filth in the outhouse as gray-black mist.
  • The potion gives him heightened perception, ritual knowledge, and an involuntary urge to pray. When he begins muttering, his Martial Soul Mark sends gray fog into his mind, interrupting him before he can complete a dangerous invocation.
  • The system reports that he has advanced to Sequence 9 and attracted an Outer Deity’s attention, then strengthens its concealment barrier to block the gaze.
  • The system reveals his pathway and a new quest: obtain a second, Shadow-attribute soul ring. A side quest offers the Potion Acting Method in exchange for praying to the great Fool.
  • An Chen’s complaints about the Fool provoke a brief, ominous reaction from the system, though the disturbance quickly passes.
  • He discovers that Grandmaster’s ordinary meditation method also steadies and strengthens his potion-related spirituality.
  • After several unsuccessful attempts to complete the prayer quest, An Chen realizes he needs the Fool’s full honorific name. The system provides it; reciting it completes the quest and grants the acting method.
  • The method teaches that potion users digest their potions by imitating the behavior associated with their sequence, while remembering that acting is a means—not an identity. An Chen’s digestion progress rises from 5% to 7%, leaving him unsure how a Secrets Suppliant should act.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen gains new supernatural perception and knowledge, but also confronts the risk of losing control to the potion’s compulsions. He becomes more cautious, questioning what the potion’s urges mean and how to digest it safely.
  • His relationship with the system is both practical and uneasy: it provides quests and warnings, protects him from the Outer Deity, and reacts strangely to his irreverent remarks.
  • The Fool remains an enigmatic presence. An Chen’s successful prayer seems to draw its gaze, though the chapter leaves the nature of that connection unclear.
  • Shitou appears only through his loud snoring, which keeps An Chen awake as he ponders the night’s revelations.

Significant themes

  • Power and loss of control: The potion grants abilities while imposing urges that may endanger An Chen.
  • Faith, ritual, and hidden forces: Prayer has tangible consequences, and proper names appear to matter.
  • Identity and performance: The acting method frames role-playing as a tool for transformation, while warning that the role must not consume the person.
  • Uncertainty and cosmic danger: The Outer Deity, the Fool, and the gray fog suggest a larger supernatural world that An Chen does not yet understand.

Ch. 8Soul Master Badge

Key plot points and events

  • An Chen uses Spirit Vision while walking through Tieyan City, observing passersby’s physical health and emotions. He realizes the ability can reveal hidden strain and feelings, but shuts it off when the sensory overload—and the attention he attracts—becomes uncomfortable.
  • At the local Spirit Hall branch, An Chen presents Elder Chen’s note to register as a Soul Master. He meets Deacon Wang, who worries that the academy may have mistreated him.
  • An Chen confirms that he is well and reports that Elder Chen helped him obtain a hundred-year Soul Beast. A test shows his Soul Power is 13, and Wang registers him and gives him a Soul Master Badge and that month’s Gold Soul Coin.
  • Wang encourages An Chen to value Elder Chen’s instruction. An Chen leaves proud to be formally recognized as a Soul Master.
  • Back at the academy, Elder Chen gives An Chen an old Body Forging Method intended for Tool Martial Soul users, along with iron weights for training. He also orders An Chen to eat with him, judging that the boy is too thin for the regimen.

Character developments

  • An Chen becomes more confident in using Spirit Vision, while learning that it can be tiring and socially conspicuous. Receiving his badge marks a concrete step in his progress as a Soul Master; he is eager about the training method but less enthusiastic about the weights.
  • Wang Gang shows a protective, fatherly concern for An Chen, revealing that he cares about the boy beyond his official duties.
  • Elder Chen shifts from mentor to hands-on trainer, planning both An Chen’s physical conditioning and his diet.

Significant themes

  • Perception and hidden feelings: Spirit Vision exposes the gap between a person’s outward condition and inner emotional state.
  • Care and mentorship: Wang Gang’s concern and Elder Chen’s practical support show adults investing in An Chen’s future.
  • Discipline and growth: Formal Soul Master status is only a beginning; An Chen’s advancement will require demanding physical training.
  • Class and opportunity: The monthly Gold Soul Coin is significant for ordinary people, while An Chen recognizes it as merely a starting point for a Soul Master.

Character interactions

  • An Chen and Wang Gang reunite warmly: Wang checks that the academy is treating him well, registers him, and urges him to make the most of Elder Chen’s guidance.
  • An Chen meets Elder Chen after registering; Elder Chen gives him the training method and weights, then insists on feeding him properly before the hard work begins.

Ch. 9A Duel

Key plot points and events

  • An Chen follows a demanding routine of study, Soul Power cultivation, physical training, and nightly prayers to The Fool as part of acting out the Secrets Suppliant role. His attempts at Ritual Magic fail, but he discovers that using Spirit Vision helps digest the Potion.
  • Overuse of Spirit Vision drains his Spirituality, causing a frightening episode of pain, eerie whispers, and a sense of being watched. Meditation calms the experience, and he learns to stop using the ability when symptoms begin.
  • Three months later, his fitness and Soul Power have improved substantially: he has reached level fifteen, and his Potion digestion is at 23%. He has also sent saved Gold Soul Coins home to support his parents.
  • In the cafeteria, An Chen’s friend Shitou is accused by Wu Lei of dirtying his expensive boots. Wu Lei demands either twenty Gold Soul Coins or that Shitou kneel and lick them clean.
  • An Chen steps in to protect Shitou. Wu Lei, remembering their previous conflict and An Chen’s connection to Elder Chen, avoids an immediate confrontation but challenges An Chen to a three-on-three duel in the back mountain in three days. An Chen accepts.

Character developments

  • An Chen grows stronger and more disciplined, learning to manage the risks of Spirit Vision. He also shows greater confidence and loyalty by accepting the duel to defend Shitou.
  • Shitou remains stubborn in the face of humiliation, though the threat of a fight makes him consider apologizing.
  • Wu Lei is still arrogant and bullying, but he is wary of An Chen’s connection to Elder Chen. His aura suggests he trains regularly and may be troubled by something beneath his anger.

Character interactions

  • An Chen supports his family by sending home much of his saved stipend.
  • Qian Yiming urgently alerts An Chen to Shitou’s predicament.
  • An Chen shields Shitou and challenges Wu Lei’s accusation, while Wu Lei tries to force him into a public contest without relying on Elder Chen’s protection.
  • After the challenge, An Chen tells Shitou that apologizing likely would not make Wu Lei relent.

Significant themes

  • Discipline and gradual growth: Consistent training and practice bring measurable progress.
  • Power and its risks: Spirit Vision is useful but dangerous when overused.
  • Loyalty and standing up to injustice: An Chen protects his friend despite the danger.
  • Class inequality and bullying: Wu Lei uses wealth and status to intimidate poorer students, while the spectators’ reactions reflect the social divide.

Ch. 10The Battle Begins

Chapter summary

At the back mountain’s Martial Stage, An Chen, Shitou, and Qian Yiming face Wu Lei and his two lackeys in a teacher-supervised, winner-stays-on duel. Before the fight, Wu Lei proposes humiliating stakes: if his side wins, the trio must pay him or kneel and apologize. An Chen counters that if they win, Wu Lei must publicly admit he framed them over the boots and avoid them afterward. Wu Lei accepts, and Zhao Qinian sets the rules: surrendering or being knocked off the stage means defeat; killing blows are forbidden.
The first match goes to Wu Lei’s side. Shitou shows how much his training has improved, but the short lackey’s Triple Stab gets past his defense and knocks him off the stage. An Chen comforts him and says the rest is up to them.
Qian Yiming wins the second match with a swift, controlled attack. He throws his Kitchen Knife to force the short lackey to block, then closes in and holds the blade at his throat, prompting a surrender.
In the third match, Qian faces the tall lackey, who uses a Savage Bull Beast Martial Soul to become heavily armored and charge with overwhelming force. Qian’s knife cannot penetrate his hide, and the charge sends him crashing into the flagpole. Injured and unable to stand, he loses.
With two defeats and Wu Lei’s side still having both the Savage Bull fighter and Wu Lei remaining, An Chen is the trio’s last competitor. After a short rest, he steps forward to fight.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen remains composed under pressure, negotiates terms that demand public accountability, supports Shitou after his loss, and takes responsibility as the final fighter.
  • Shitou is visibly nervous, but speaks up to challenge Wu Lei and demonstrates the progress his training has brought him before being defeated. An Chen reassures him.
  • Qian Yiming stays characteristically quiet and focused. He wins decisively against the short lackey, then fights bravely against a much tougher opponent and leaves the stage injured.
  • Wu Lei turns the duel into a public contest of status as well as skill. Though confident, he accepts An Chen’s terms after Shitou challenges him.
  • Zhao Qinian acts as a detached referee, ensuring the duel remains within agreed limits.

Significant themes

The chapter emphasizes training and perseverance, shown in Shitou’s improved abilities; courage under pressure, as the working students accept unequal odds; and honor and accountability, expressed through An Chen’s demand that Wu Lei publicly admit his wrongdoing. The winner-stays-on format also creates escalating tension, leaving An Chen to face the remaining opposition alone.

Ch. 11Turnaround

Plot points and events

  • In the fourth match, An Chen defeats Tall Lackey by using his Iron Pot to deflect the lackey’s punches, then strike his knee and neck, ending the fight.
  • In the fifth match, Wu Lei tries to counter An Chen’s Spirit Vision, which lets An Chen anticipate attacks. Wu Lei feints mid-strike and wounds An Chen’s leg, exposing the limits of relying on Spirit Vision.
  • An Chen switches off Spirit Vision and endures Wu Lei’s relentless whip assault behind the Iron Pot. He waits for a brief pause, then uses his first Soul Skill, Black Fog, to conceal himself. Emerging unseen, he restrains Wu Lei and pushes him off the stage.
  • An Chen’s side wins the contest, two matches out of three. Wu Lei admits he framed An Chen over the boots and promises to avoid the three working students at the academy, though he warns An Chen that their conflict is not over.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen shows composure and adaptability: when Spirit Vision is countered, he recognizes its weakness, abandons it, and wins through observation, timing, and his Soul Skill. He remains calm despite his injury and victory.
  • Wu Lei begins confident and taunting, but accepts defeat and publicly admits his wrongdoing. His final threat suggests his resentment—and the rivalry—remains.
  • Shitou celebrates An Chen enthusiastically, then worries about his injured leg. Qian Yiming silently acknowledges An Chen’s performance with a nod.
  • An Chen approaches Wu Lei after the fight, and their brief exchange of looks leads to Wu Lei’s admission and apology of sorts.

Significant themes

  • Adaptability over dependence: An Chen succeeds by revising his strategy when Spirit Vision proves unreliable.
  • Courage and restraint: He withstands pressure without panicking, while Wu Lei’s defeat forces him to acknowledge the truth.
  • Victory and unresolved conflict: The working students’ triumph challenges the academy’s class hierarchy, but Wu Lei’s parting warning makes clear that the rivalry is not settled.

Ch. 12The Gathering Storm

Chapter Summary: “The Gathering Storm”

Key plot points and events

  • An Chen and his friends arrive at the Cafeteria, where students are discussing his victory over Wu Lei. A Wu Family member warns that Wu Lei’s cousin, Wu Ming, is powerful and protective of his family, then threatens An Chen’s group.
  • An Chen dismisses the provocation and focuses on breakfast. Shitou and Qian Yiming are visibly uneasy, while An Chen remains calm.
  • At Elder Chen’s residence, An Chen learns that the yellow bird he saw at the previous day’s fight is Elder Chen’s century-old Hibiscus Bird Martial Soul, used to carry messages. Elder Chen confirms he witnessed the battle.
  • Elder Chen questions An Chen’s unusually precise ability to anticipate attacks. An Chen explains that he watches physical cues such as posture and muscle movement, concealing the true source of his perception.
  • Elder Chen warns that this approach can be countered, praises An Chen’s composure and adaptability after being deceived, and stresses that he must improve his physical condition.
  • Elder Chen also cautions that An Chen’s Iron Pot Martial Soul may be unusual or mutated, and warns him about signs of Evil Soul Masters near Tieyan City. He advises An Chen to avoid going out and assures him the Wu Family need not be feared.
  • As An Chen heads back to the dormitory, an earthquake-like tremor and a huge explosion shake the city. Black smoke rises from the north. A panicked Soul Master rushes to Elder Chen with news of a disaster.

Character developments

  • An Chen stays composed in the face of social pressure and focuses on practical matters. He is thoughtful about Elder Chen’s warnings and accepts the need to train and recover.
  • Elder Chen acts as both mentor and protector: he carefully evaluates An Chen’s combat ability, recognizes its limits, and offers support against the Wu Family.
  • Shitou and Qian Yiming are worried by the Wu Family’s threat, highlighting their loyalty and concern for An Chen.
  • Wu Ming is introduced indirectly as a formidable potential adversary, setting up future conflict.

Significant themes

  • Composure under pressure: An Chen refuses to be drawn into provocation and adapts calmly in battle.
  • Limits of talent and perception: Even a remarkable ability can be anticipated or exploited; physical preparation and adaptability matter.
  • Mentorship and protection: Elder Chen balances criticism, encouragement, and practical support.
  • Foreshadowing and rising danger: The warnings about Evil Soul Masters culminate in the explosion and smoke, signaling a broader threat beyond the Wu Family dispute.
  • Uncertainty about identity and power: An Chen’s unusual Martial Soul may be a beneficial or dangerous mutation.

Character interactions

  • An Chen’s calm responses contrast with Shitou’s anger and Qian Yiming’s quiet concern during the Cafeteria confrontation.
  • Elder Chen questions An Chen closely about his fighting technique, then praises his ability to adjust after a feint while warning him not to rely on prediction alone.
  • Elder Chen reassures An Chen that he can seek help if the Wu Family causes trouble, strengthening their mentor–student bond.
  • The chapter ends with an urgent interruption: a panicked Soul Master brings Elder Chen news just as the city faces an apparent attack.

Ch. 13Blood Moon

Plot points and events

  • Black smoke rises north of Tieyan City after reports that Evil Soul Masters have massacred nearby villages. Elder Chen and the Spirit Hall deacon hurry to the northern wall, where they find the Hall Master’s deputy, Wen, and other Soul Masters.
  • Below them, black-robed Evil Soul Masters chant around a pit filled with human remains and blood. The pit gives off no Soul Power, making its purpose unclear.
  • The smoke gathers into a crimson Blood Moon. Its light drains the pit and causes villagers, corpses, the chanting Evil Soul Masters, and even Elder Chen’s summoned Soul Beasts to swell grotesquely and split open, producing infant-like creatures that quickly turn to ash. Attacks against the Moon fail.
  • Meanwhile, An Chen collapses in agony, bleeding from his orifices. In an inner vision, he is surrounded by living flesh, the Blood Moon, and umbilical cords that try to pull him into a welcoming “Mother’s” embrace. A roar and Gray Fog from his right hand repel them; he wakes in the infirmary.
  • Shitou and Qian Yiming explain that they found An Chen and brought him to a doctor. An Chen connects his vision to the Blood Moon Shitou says appeared shortly after the loud bang.
  • As the Moon’s light approaches Tieyan City, Elder Chen orders Wen to evacuate Spirit Hall personnel and civilians while he stays behind to try to destroy it. He begins activating his seventh Soul Skill, Myriad Beasts Possession.

Character developments and interactions

  • Elder Chen moves from investigating the threat to taking command under extreme pressure. Though he recognizes the danger and asks Wen to prepare an evacuation and seek reinforcements if he fails, he chooses to confront the Blood Moon himself.
  • Wen is capable and authoritative, but the supernatural disaster leaves her uncertain; she challenges Elder Chen’s decision to remain behind.
  • An Chen experiences a mysterious, seemingly psychic encounter with the Moon’s flesh-and-mother imagery. His Gray Fog protects him, but something inside him breaks or dissipates in the process, suggesting a significant change whose nature is not yet clear.
  • Shitou and Qian Yiming show concern for An Chen, rescuing him and staying with him until he wakes. An Chen immediately asks them about the northern event.

Significant themes

  • Body horror and corrupted birth: The Blood Moon turns living beings, dead bodies, and even summoned creatures into vessels for grotesque “births.”
  • The limits of familiar power: Soul Skills cannot reach or harm the Moon, and established explanations based on Soul Power do not account for what is happening.
  • Protection and sacrifice: Elder Chen prioritizes civilian evacuation while accepting the risk of facing the threat alone.
  • Connection between the personal and the catastrophic: An Chen’s inner vision mirrors the events at the northern gate, hinting that he is linked to the Blood Moon in some way.

Ch. 14Believer

Plot points and events

  • Elder Chen uses his seventh Soul Skill, Myriad Beasts Possession, and a speed enhancement to rush the Blood Moon, hoping to destroy it. Before he reaches its moonlight, it abruptly vanishes. The city’s afflicted Soul Master recovers, and daylight returns.
  • Elder Chen tells Wen to handle the aftermath and inspects the ritual site. Most of the Evil Soul Masters’ bodies remain, but the leader’s corpse is missing. He warns that the survivor may repeat the ritual and orders a search.
  • At the academy infirmary, Shitou tells An Chen that rumors about the Blood Moon are spreading. Alone, An Chen checks his system and discovers his Secrets Suppliant digestion has reached 100%, up from 23%.
  • An Chen concludes that his near-total surrender to the “mother” during the crisis made him a perfectly devout believer—and completed his acting. He is relieved by the result but has no desire to experience it again.
  • Far from the city, the missing cult leader kneels in a village and prays. A strange, living force surges through his body; convinced the Mother has answered him, he leaves, apparently empowered and still dangerous.

Character developments and interactions

  • Elder Chen shifts from attempting to stop the Blood Moon to investigating the ritual’s aftermath. His fatigue gives way to alarm when he discovers the leader is missing, showing his awareness that the threat persists.
  • An Chen gains a major advance in his mystical path and recognizes that faith—not merely ritual practice—was the key to his progress. His dry reaction contrasts the terrifying experience that enabled it.
  • The surviving Evil Soul Master appears to deepen his devotion and receive a supernatural response, suggesting the ritual’s disappearance did not end the cult’s influence.
  • Wen accepts responsibility for managing the city’s immediate aftermath, while Shitou brings An Chen news and food.

Significant themes

  • Faith as power: An Chen’s intense belief completes his spiritual “acting,” while the cult leader’s prayer seems to grant him new power.
  • Victory without resolution: The Blood Moon ends and the victims recover, but the missing leader means the danger remains.
  • Cost of advancement: An Chen’s progress comes through a horrifying loss of control and surrender—effective, but not something he wants to repeat.
  • Public uncertainty versus hidden truth: The city trades conflicting rumors, while the surviving cultist’s private experience reveals that the supernatural threat is still active.

Ch. 15Hibernation

Key plot points and events

  • Three days after the Blood Moon incident, An Chen is released from the infirmary. He visits Elder Chen to ask about the explosion and black smoke at Tieyan City’s north gate.
  • Elder Chen says Evil Soul Masters performed a sacrifice. Many people fainted after seeing the smoke, but he believes there is no lasting danger. The ritual’s leader escaped and may still be nearby.
  • An Chen avoids mentioning the strange voice and vision he experienced. Elder Chen gives him an old storage ring containing Combat Insights and his research, the Soul Skill Compendium.
  • Elder Chen tells An Chen to stop cultivating Soul Power for several months: he has advanced too quickly and needs to strengthen his foundation through exercise and study.
  • An Chen notices that his Spirit Vision has become clearer, reaches farther, and lasts longer. He also feels the mental heaviness he had experienced after drinking a Potion has eased, suggesting he has fully digested it. His attempts to use Ritual Magic still fail.
  • Three months pass. An Chen studies and trains instead of cultivating Soul Power. As the final academy assessment approaches, he learns it will include both a written test and actual combat.

Character developments

  • An Chen follows Elder Chen’s advice, balancing study with physical training. His improved Spirit Vision and lighter mental state suggest progress with the Potion, though he keeps his more unusual experiences secret.
  • Elder Chen shows concern for An Chen’s recovery and growth, offering both practical guidance and valuable research.
  • Qian Yiming is confident about the written portion of the assessment despite his notoriously hard-to-read notes.
  • Shitou remains teasing and energetic, and joins An Chen’s training.

Significant themes

  • Caution and self-discipline: An Chen must consolidate his rapid progress rather than push further.
  • Knowledge and preparation: Elder Chen’s books provide a foundation for understanding Soul Skills and combat.
  • Secrets and uncertainty: An Chen conceals his vision and the voice he heard, while the escaped Evil Soul Master remains a threat.
  • Friendship and humor: The banter among An Chen, Shitou, and Qian Yiming lightens the chapter’s more ominous backdrop.

Character interactions

  • An Chen and Elder Chen share a trusting teacher-student relationship, mixing serious advice with playful teasing over the storage ring.
  • Shitou and Qian Yiming bicker about the legibility of Qian’s notes, while An Chen laughs along.
  • When An Chen suggests running laps to prepare for the assessment, Shitou eagerly follows and Qian Yiming joins after a brief pause.

Ch. 16Top Freshman

Plot points and events

  • Freshman final assessments begin with a written exam and a combat tournament. An Chen finishes the written test quickly, relying on prior knowledge and sound reasoning.
  • In the tournament, An Chen wins each match with calm, efficient technique: he waits for openings, uses opponents’ momentum against them, and avoids using any Soul Skills. He brings out his Iron Pot Martial Soul only against stronger opponents.
  • Shitou finishes twelfth, while Qian Yiming places sixth. An Chen takes first place, becoming the academy’s top freshman.
  • The following morning, An Chen meets Wu Ming, Wu Lei’s older cousin, practicing swordsmanship in the back mountain. Wu Ming acknowledges that Wu Lei was at fault in their earlier conflict and challenges An Chen to a duel, promising not to use his Second Soul Ring. They agree to fight the next morning.

Character developments and interactions

  • An Chen demonstrates composure, tactical skill, and restraint throughout the tournament, winning without revealing the full extent of his abilities. Though pleased to be first, he treats the result as only a beginning.
  • Shitou is enthusiastic about An Chen’s victory and earns a respectable twelfth place despite weaknesses against agile opponents.
  • Qian Yiming shows steady improvement thanks to his training with An Chen and finishes sixth, though he conceals his disappointment at coming behind An Chen.
  • Wu Ming is introduced as a disciplined, accomplished fighter with a strong competitive streak. Unlike the impulsive Wu Lei, he approaches An Chen respectfully, framing the duel as a test between peers rather than an attempt at revenge.

Significant themes

  • Skill over brute force: An Chen’s timing, adaptability, and use of opponents’ momentum let him defeat stronger students.
  • Restraint and hidden potential: He wins without using Soul Skills, leaving others uncertain about his true abilities.
  • Competition as growth: The freshman rankings celebrate progress, while Wu Ming’s challenge suggests that rivalry can be a way to test and improve oneself.

Ch. 17The Ninth Hammer

Plot

  • An Chen duels Wu Ming in the arena. Wu Ming agrees to use only his Martial Soul and martial techniques, revealing a compact black hammer called the Hao Hammer, which he identifies as his family’s true Martial Soul.
  • Wu Ming’s strength and controlled, defensive hammer style overwhelm An Chen in direct exchanges. An Chen relies on footwork and uses the Iron Pot to deflect blows rather than meet them head-on.
  • Wu Ming unleashes a sequence of nine increasingly powerful hammer strikes. An Chen survives the final blow, but realizes the technique is incomplete and suspects it resembles the Clear Sky School’s Chaotic Cloak Hammer Technique.
  • An Chen uses his Black Fog Soul Skill to obscure the arena and gain heightened awareness. Wu Ming’s senses are hindered, but he adapts by staying guarded and listening, limiting the skill’s advantage.
  • In a second use of the fog, An Chen feints high, targets Wu Ming’s leg, and exploits the momentary imbalance to land a blow to his chest. The chapter ends with both acknowledging the move, while An Chen is nearly out of Soul Power and likely to lose if the fight continues.

Character development

  • An Chen shows tactical flexibility, agility, and patience. Recognizing he cannot overpower Wu Ming, he adapts his defense and eventually uses deception to create an opening, though the effort drains him.
  • Wu Ming proves exceptionally strong, disciplined, and composed. He quickly studies An Chen’s Soul Skill and counters it intelligently, while remaining respectful of An Chen’s skill.

Themes

  • Strategy versus strength: An Chen’s movement and trickery help him withstand Wu Ming’s overwhelming power.
  • Adaptation and observation: Both fighters adjust their approach as they learn each other’s abilities.
  • Limits and endurance: An Chen’s Soul Power and stamina constrain how long he can rely on his strongest tactic.
  • Inherited techniques and mystery: Wu Ming’s Hao Hammer and fragmentary nine-strike technique evoke the Clear Sky School, hinting at a connection or shared tradition.

Character interactions

  • The duel remains respectful and measured: Wu Ming praises An Chen’s reactions and footwork, while An Chen recognizes Wu Ming’s hearing and tactical intelligence.
  • Their brief compliments reflect mutual respect, even as each tries to find a decisive advantage.

Ch. 18Farewell

Chapter Summary: “Farewell”

Key plot points and events

  • An Chen’s training spar with Wu Ming ends when Wu Ming recognizes that An Chen is exhausted and calls a halt. Zhao Qinian briefly watches them and approves before disappearing again.
  • Six years pass. At twelve, An Chen has reached Soul Power Level 29 and fully digested the Listener Potion. The potion sharpened his hearing and intuition, and gave him the ability to hear whispers from mysterious entities—an ability he considers dangerous.
  • An Chen decides to leave Tieyan City for Shrek Academy. He hopes that meeting Tang San may eventually help him obtain an Immortal Herb from the Ice and Fire Yang Well, despite Dugu Bo’s guarding it.
  • He tells his dormitory friends, Shitou and Qian Yiming, who react with worry and farewell wishes.
  • An Chen asks Elder Chen’s permission to travel. Elder Chen approves, offers advice about Flender and Shrek Academy, and gives An Chen a supplementary Black Card for expenses.
  • An Chen visits his adoptive parents in Qingshi Village, gives them his saved Soul Master allowance, and helps with chores. The next morning, he sets out again, promising to return.

  • Found family and belonging: His friends, teacher, and adoptive parents each provide support as he departs.
  • Ambition tempered by danger: An Chen seeks powerful opportunities, but his new ability and memories of past supernatural danger make him wary.
  • Farewell and uncertainty: Those who care for An Chen send him off with affection, knowing the world beyond home is perilous.

Character interactions

  • Wu Ming ends the spar out of concern for An Chen’s condition, while Zhao Qinian offers only a brief word of approval.
  • Shitou and Qian Yiming joke with An Chen, then respond emotionally when he announces his departure.
  • Elder Chen questions An Chen’s destination, advises him about Flender, and equips him for the journey.
  • An Chen’s adoptive parents welcome him home, accept his help, and send him away with provisions and heartfelt concern.

Ch. 19Suotu City

Chapter Summary: Suotu City

Key Plot Points and Events

  • An Chen arrives in Suotu City after traveling from Qingshi Village through two provinces. He settles into an inn but delays seeking out Shrek Academy, hoping to encounter Tang San and Xiao Wu naturally.
  • Using his Spirit Vision, An Chen observes the people around him and studies their physical and emotional auras.
  • He eventually spots Tang San and Xiao Wu walking together. Rather than approaching them directly, he follows at a distance to avoid arousing Tang San’s suspicion.
  • The pair enters the Rose Hotel after Xiao Wu admires its appearance. When they discover that only one room remains, Xiao Wu readily agrees to share it with Tang San, mirroring the original storyline.
  • An Chen sits nearby and watches events unfold while pretending to be an ordinary guest.
  • Dai Mubai then enters the hotel with two women and demands the remaining room, claiming that the hotel always reserves one for him. His arrogant behavior sets up the impending confrontation with Tang San and Xiao Wu.

Character Developments

  • An Chen: Demonstrates caution, strategic thinking, and knowledge of the original plot. He deliberately engineers an apparently accidental meeting with Tang San and Xiao Wu instead of approaching them openly. His Spirit Vision allows him to analyze people’s strength and emotional states.
  • Tang San: Appears modest and honest but remains perceptive and cautious beneath the surface. He calmly accepts Grandmaster’s arrangements and agrees to share the room with Xiao Wu.
  • Xiao Wu: Retains her lively, impulsive personality. She enthusiastically chooses the Rose Hotel and treats sharing a room with Tang San as completely natural, emphasizing their close sibling-like bond.
  • Dai Mubai: Is introduced as powerful, arrogant, and accustomed to privilege. Spirit Vision reveals that beneath his confidence, he is suffering from suppressed pain, dissatisfaction, and pressure connected to his family and exile from the Star Luo Empire.

Significant Themes

  • Fate versus altered destiny: An Chen observes major events from the original story occurring almost exactly as remembered, raising the possibility that he can influence events while still being drawn into the established timeline.
  • Caution and manipulation: An Chen’s indirect approach to Tang San shows the importance of appearing harmless and avoiding suspicion.
  • Outward appearance versus inner reality: Tang San’s ordinary appearance hides his intelligence, while Dai Mubai’s arrogance conceals emotional turmoil and suffering.
  • Observation and hidden emotions: Spirit Vision provides An Chen with insight into the true physical and psychological states of others, allowing him to see what ordinary perception misses.
  • Power and privilege: Dai Mubai’s confidence and entitlement reflect his noble background and access to authority.

Character Interactions

  • An Chen observes Tang San and Xiao Wu from a distance, studying their relationship without directly interfering.
  • Xiao Wu playfully persuades Tang San to stay at the Rose Hotel, and Tang San indulgently agrees.
  • The hotel waiter interprets their decision to share a room suggestively, though Tang San fails to understand the implication.
  • Dai Mubai interrupts their check-in and asserts his privilege by demanding the room. The chapter ends as the hotel manager is summoned, preparing for the expected conflict between Dai Mubai and Tang San.

Ch. 20White Tiger

Key plot points and events

  • Tang San and Xiao Wu clash with Dai Mubai over a hotel room he claims was reserved for him. The manager tries to smooth things over, but Xiao Wu refuses to yield.
  • Dai Mubai challenges them to fight. Tang San steps in first, using Xuanyu Hand and a force-diverting technique to withstand Dai Mubai’s initial attacks. Impressed, Dai Mubai agrees to let them have the room but asks for a proper match.
  • Dai Mubai reveals his White Tiger Martial Soul and three Soul Rings, including a Millennium Soul Ring. Tang San responds with Blue Silver Grass and two rings, insisting that no Martial Soul is inherently useless.
  • Their battle escalates. Tang San’s techniques and unusually tough Blue Silver Grass briefly restrain Dai Mubai, but Dai Mubai breaks free and activates White Tiger Vajra Transformation, overwhelming Tang San.
  • As Dai Mubai prepares a dangerous finishing strike, Xiao Wu moves to intervene. An Chen steps between the fighters, summons two yellow Soul Rings and an Iron Pot, and fills the hall with Black Fog that disrupts Dai Mubai’s senses while enhancing An Chen’s own.

Character developments and interactions

  • Tang San remains composed and strategic, choosing to fight rather than let Xiao Wu take the risk. He earns Dai Mubai’s respect through skill and determination, even while outmatched.
  • Xiao Wu is fiercely protective and confrontational; she refuses to back down and later tries to protect Tang San.
  • Dai Mubai begins arrogant and aggressive, but his attitude shifts toward admiration once Tang San proves himself. His greater strength and additional Soul Ring ultimately give him the upper hand.
  • An Chen watches from the sidelines until Tang San is in serious danger, then intervenes with a powerful sensory-disrupting ability. His dry comments also provide comic relief.
  • The hotel manager tries to appease Dai Mubai, while a nearby waiter is caught in the collateral damage of the fight.

Significant themes

  • Skill versus raw power: Tang San’s precision and control let him challenge an opponent with greater Soul Power, but Dai Mubai’s superior strength eventually prevails.
  • Respect earned through combat: Dai Mubai’s hostility gives way to respect as Tang San demonstrates his ability.
  • Belief in potential: Tang San rejects the idea that Blue Silver Grass is useless, emphasizing that a Soul Master’s ability matters more than the Martial Soul alone.
  • Intervention and loyalty: Xiao Wu and An Chen both act to protect Tang San when the fight turns dangerous.
