Background

Gu Changsheng transmigrated to Douluo Continent and spent six years in the Holy Glory Orphanage outside Spirit City. Familiar with the future surrounding Tang San, Spirit Hall, and the path to godhood, he feared becoming an insignificant casualty of Spirit Hall’s predicted downfall. 1

At his martial-soul awakening, he manifested the ancient dark-gold Myriad Heaven Book and revealed Innate Full Soul Power. The simultaneous activation of the Civilization Deduction System gave him the ability to analyze, record, and deduce martial souls; he immediately used it to expose the orphanage director’s cultivation flaws and establish himself as a strategic asset to Spirit Hall. 1

Instructor Saluo transferred him into Spirit Hall Academy, where the Book’s recording function allowed him to compile martial-soul data from texts. Gu’s successful evaluation before Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan—including identifying ten concealed martial souls and defeating the ringed Lin Yan without a soul skill—earned him entry into the Pope Palace. 2 3

Before Bibi Dong, Gu requested access to Spirit Hall’s databases rather than wealth, spirit bones, or a personal master. He stated his goal of identifying suitable cultivation paths for all Spirit Hall spirit masters, leading Bibi Dong to admit him into the Pope Palace and assign Hu Liena to cultivate beside him. 4

His early research expanded from analysis into practical martial-soul guidance. He exposed flaws in Yan, Xie Yue, and Hu Liena’s combat paths, triggered the Golden Generation Remodeling quest, and temporarily awakened Shi Shan’s neglected plant-affinity wooden-stick martial soul into an iron-vine-like form. 6 7

Appearance

Gu Changsheng is presented as a calm, gentle-looking youth whose appearance contrasts with his calculating combat style. During the Continental Spirit Master Academy Elite Tournament, he wears Spirit Hall’s platinum team uniform. 45 47

  • Carries or manifests an ancient dark-gold book with turning golden pages: the Myriad Heaven Book. 1
  • Is described as a white-robed youth during the tournament period. 47
  • His fifth Soul Ring is black with faint silver-blue patterns after absorbing the Mirror Space Spirit Deer. 87

Personality

Gu is cautious, observant, and intensely strategic. He treats knowledge as a means of survival and institutional reform, preferring data and understanding over conventional rewards or raw displays of force. 4 17

He is willing to manipulate enemies’ fears, relationships, and tactical habits—most notably exploiting Tang San’s attachment to Xiao Wu—but does not regard everyone as expendable. Hu Liena is explicitly distinguished as “one of his own people,” while Gu protects Xiao Wu’s identity despite recognizing the political danger she represents. 47 48 87

His defining conviction is that fate is not immutable. Though visions of Tang San and Spirit Hall’s ruin repeatedly unsettle him, he ultimately rejects fatalism and pursues strength sufficient to shape outcomes himself. 11 29 33

Gu’s loyalty to Spirit Hall is sincere but conditional. He supports Bibi Dong while retaining the intention to stop her should she embrace the White Tower’s path of sacrifice and exploitation. 84 87

Abilities & Skills

Myriad Heaven Book

Gu’s Book-type Martial Soul analyzes martial souls, Soul Power, soul-skill structures, battlefield patterns, arrays, and soul-guidance devices. Its Civilization Deduction System is intended to establish a martial-soul civilization capable of challenging the God Realm’s monopoly. 1

  • Records martial-soul data directly from books, allowing Gu to build an expanding research archive. 2
  • Identifies cultivation rank, martial-soul type, combat route, weaknesses, and compatible development paths. 1 2
  • Deduces combat trajectories and exploitable flaws, enabling Gu to evade or counter stronger opponents. 3 60
  • Can analyze arrays, ancient residual patterns, and soul-guidance structures. 20 21 73
  • Cannot safely complete every analysis; Bibi Dong’s twin martial souls and contaminated divine aura exceeded its capacity, while the Rakshasa residual mark was judged too dangerous to analyze. 4 21

First Soul Skill — Myriad Burning

Obtained from the Phantom Bookworm, Myriad Burning reproduces recorded mental distortions and skill traces through the Myriad Heaven Book. 11

  • Replicated Hu Liena’s false-Charm effect to shift an enemy’s perception and make attacks miss. 11
  • Copied the mental-control technique Phantom Heart Guidance, helping force Yan Xiu to reveal information under Bibi Dong’s pressure. 17
  • Recorded Yan’s flame-based Soul Ring effects for use in their Training Ground rematch. 20

Second Soul Skill — Myriad Heaven Spirit Seal

Myriad Heaven Spirit Seal places a temporary mental mark on a target, reveals its Soul Power flow, and interferes with its soul-skill trajectory. 26

  • Maintains only one seal at a time. 26
  • Lasts approximately three breaths. 26
  • Caused Yan’s flaming punch to deviate into a pillar by briefly disrupting his Soul Power flow. 27
  • Concealed Xiao Wu’s unstable aura when her transformed spirit-beast identity risked exposure. 31

Third Soul Skill — Minor Thousand-Faced Phantom Realm

Created through the mutated 5,300-year Thousand-Faced Phantom Demon Spider Soul Ring, this area-control illusion distorts perception and produces realistic false images. 34

  • Confuses direction, sight, hearing, and spatial judgment rather than directly invading every target’s mind. 34 35
  • Can trap weaker opponents and briefly disorient stronger opponents. 34
  • Creates openings for allies such as Xie Yue and Yan to strike decisive targets. 34
  • Its effective range and stability can be weakened by mental suppression, including the combined effects of God-Bewitching Incense and the Soul-Suppressing Bell. 41

Fourth Soul Skill — Myriad Heaven Mirror Body

Obtained from the Mirror Shadow Spirit Fox, this skill creates mental projections that imitate Gu’s Soul Power fluctuations and partially reproduce his abilities. 36

  • Can maintain three projections for battlefield interference. 36
  • A single high-intensity mirror body can briefly simulate roughly seventy percent of Gu’s Soul Power fluctuations. 36
  • Combines with Minor Thousand-Faced Phantom Realm to make the real Gu difficult to distinguish from projections. 36 38
  • Helped dismantle the Academy Second Team’s formation and evade Yunluo Academy’s captain in tournament combat. 38 46

Fifth Soul Skill — Myriad Image Projection

Obtained from the 13,000-year Mirror Space Spirit Deer, this skill reproduces true movement trajectories, exposes weaknesses, and has exceptional compatibility with mental and spatial phenomena. 87

  • Disassembles enemies’ Soul Power flow, balance, attack habits, and movement paths in real time. 93 95
  • Enables precise close-quarters counters against trained assassins and palace infiltrators. 93 97
  • Identified the weak point in the Silver-Faced Man’s black-flame defense, allowing Gu and Xue Qinghe to break a battlefield deadlock. 97
  • Carries the uncontrolled residual ability Old Shadow Retrospect, which can glimpse traces hidden in memories and emotions. 87

Myriad Heaven Return to Storage: Soul Devouring

A technique developed during Gu’s mental battle against the Thousand-Faced Phantom Demon Spider’s remnant soul. 33

  • Sealed the spider’s consciousness within the Myriad Heaven Book. 33
  • Extracted disguise, inducement, and emotional-projection properties from the remnant soul. 33
  • Allows Gu to turn hostile mental contamination into analyzable resources when it enters the Book’s domain. 33

Myriad Heaven Breaking Momentum Chapter

An original counter-technique derived from Gu’s analysis of Tang Hao’s Great Clear Sky Hammer and Tang San’s Chaos Cloak Hammer Technique. 63

  • Targets the transition point where power forms, connects, or changes rather than opposing a technique at peak force. 63
  • Interrupted Yan’s linkage between his Flame Right Arm Bone and soul skill, causing premature flame eruptions. 63
  • Broke Xie Yue’s twin-blade rhythm during a transition between attacks. 63
  • Is less reliable against subtle mental techniques and opponents significantly stronger than Gu. 63
  • Can disrupt soul-destroying seals and soul-guidance device patterns only after identifying the relevant core node. 72 73

Array and Soul-Guidance Research

Gu applies the Book’s analysis to ancient arrays and emerging soul-guidance technology. 20 71

  • Activated the Training Ground’s ancient formation to absorb and return Yan’s fire energy. 20
  • Identified silver-pattern weapons as early soul-guidance devices capable of storing, compressing, conducting, transforming, or releasing Soul Power. 71 88
  • Reversed the Chisha Furnace’s energy circulation, freeing captives whose vitality and Soul Power were being used as fuel. 77
  • Helped destroy the White Tower’s main furnace while preserving the lives of the 37,621 people linked to it. 82

Equipment and Items

  • Ancient Array Scroll — Given by Bibi Dong for analysis after Gu identified the dangerous residual patterns beneath the Pope Palace. 21
  • Spirit Hall command token — Granted by Bibi Dong before the hunt for Gu’s third Soul Ring; capable of mobilizing a Titled Douluo. 29
  • Chisha Furnace Core — Entrusted to Gu by Bibi Dong after the White Tower incident. 84
  • Purple-gold authority token — Permits Gu to command most Spirit Hall branches, excluding the Elder Palace and Elder Hall. 84

Relationships

  • Bibi Dong — Pontifex, patron, and teacher figure. She grants Gu access to Spirit Hall’s resources, trusts his insight, and fears both his potential and the possibility that power may turn either of them into weapons. 4 17 84 87
  • Hu Liena — Fellow disciple, closest partner, and romantic interest. She supports Gu’s tactics, challenges his self-destructive habits, and refuses to be treated as a disposable chess piece. 3 29 47 64
  • Xie Yue — Teammate and Hu Liena’s brother. Initially skeptical, he becomes a disciplined executor of Gu’s strategies and supervises Gu’s physical training. 6 23 38
  • Yan — Competitive teammate and frequent test subject for Gu’s methods. Their rivalry develops into mutual respect and coordinated teamwork. 6 20 63
  • Yue Guan — Examiner, expedition leader, and senior supporter who recognizes Gu’s value early and repeatedly verifies his accomplishments before Bibi Dong. 3 35 43
  • Tang San — Principal rival and the greatest perceived threat to Spirit Hall’s future. Gu studies, provokes, and strategically pressures him, ultimately defeating him in the tournament final. 44 48 60
  • Xiao Wu — A transformed Hundred-Thousand-Year Spirit Beast whom Gu protects on several occasions. She once saved him during an assassination attempt and harbors unreciprocated feelings for him. 31 41 87
  • Xue Qinghe / Qian Renxue — Politically dangerous counterpart and intermittent ally. Their relationship is built on mutual recognition, concealed identities, and battlefield trust. 52 82 97
  • Qian Daoliu — Great High Priest who tests Gu’s courage and allegiance. Gu pledges loyalty to Spirit Hall rather than exclusively to Bibi Dong. 64

Major Arcs

White Tower Investigation

During a supposed holiday with Hu Liena, Gu uncovers the White Tower’s silver-pattern technology, human experimentation, and attempts to create a soul-guidance civilization through sacrificial furnace systems. He rejects the group’s methods while recognizing the legitimacy of ordinary people’s desire for power. 71 77 82

Elder Hall and Political Scrutiny

Gu’s research into the White Tower seed core and soul-guidance devices draws attention from the Elder Hall. He navigates the conflict between the Pope Palace and Elder Hall without openly declaring blind allegiance to either faction. 84 88
