Background
Cai Qingwen belonged to the Cai Family, a Qinglin County merchant household chiefly involved in tea trading. The family sponsored Chen Clan Martial Hall’s Third Senior Brother, Yang Zheng, who was Cai’s strongest supporter within the hall. The Cai and Chu Families were commercial rivals, making Cai’s conflict with Chu Yunjiang an extension of their families’ longstanding feud. 9 12
Before Cheng Yang’s arrival, Cai was one of the strongest candidates for Chen Feiyi’s final personal-disciple position and had invested considerable effort in securing it. Cheng’s immediate preferential treatment, however, convinced Cai that a newcomer was about to take the position he believed he deserved. 6
Appearance
Cai Qingwen presents himself as refined, courteous, and jade-like in manner, but his cultivated exterior repeatedly gives way to visible savagery and anger when challenged. 7
- Refined, gentle-looking countenance. 7
- Usually maintains a warm, formal smile in public. 7 18
- His expression darkens noticeably when his ambitions or pride are threatened. 6 10
Personality
Cai is proud, entitled, and intensely intolerant of rejection. Cheng Yang’s polite refusal of a Lantern Gathering invitation offended him deeply because, in his own view, no one had ever dared refuse him before. 7
He is also vindictive and calculating. After losing the chance to become the seventh core disciple, he ordered Qian Biao to investigate Cheng’s background and considered eliminating him if he proved to be an unsupported commoner. 8 9
Despite his scheming, Cai lacks emotional control when publicly humiliated. He rejected his father’s attempts at reconciliation, openly challenged Cheng Yang, and withdrew from Chen Clan Martial Hall after losing their exchange. 19 21

History
Rivalry with Cheng Yang
Cai first became hostile when Chen Feiyi gave Cheng Yang exceptional food privileges and showed clear interest in accepting him as a personal disciple. He regarded Cheng as an interloper threatening the position he had pursued for a long time. 6
When Cheng declined his Lantern Gathering invitation, Cai’s wounded pride turned into personal resentment. Encouraged by Qian Biao, he began treating Cheng as someone who needed to be removed rather than merely surpassed. 7
After Cheng became Chen Feiyi’s seventh core disciple, Cai’s resentment intensified. He sent Qian Biao to test Cheng in public, but Qian was decisively defeated, further humiliating Cai and undermining his standing among the disciples. 9 11
Star Tower Assassination Attempt
Cai used an exclusive Star Tower token obtained through his father’s past favor to commission Cheng Yang’s assassination. The attempt failed, costing Cai nearly all of his savings. 18
When Cheng survived and publicly insisted that Cai address him as “Senior Brother,” Cai concealed his guilt but became even more enraged. He returned to Star Tower seeking a second attempt, only to learn that the price had risen to one thousand taels because Cheng was now a guarded core disciple. 18
Final Break with the Chen Clan Martial Hall
Cai Qiming ordered Cai to apologize and present Cheng with a valuable ginseng gift, but Cai rejected every proposed compromise. He insisted that Cheng had stolen his rightful core-disciple position and that Cheng had provoked him. 19 21
After insulting Cheng as a “mud-legged peasant,” Cai challenged him directly. Cheng defeated him in their Vajra Fist clash, after which Cai refused to apologize and withdrew from Chen Clan Martial Hall. 21
Cai Qiming initially attempted reconciliation, but privately concluded that Cheng’s talent made him too dangerous for the Cai Family to tolerate. Father and son ultimately aligned in their intent to kill Cheng. 21
Death
Before the Cai Family could act further, a former Star Tower senior assassinated Cai Qiming and exterminated the entire Cai Family to eliminate all potential risks and witnesses. 23
Relationships
- Cheng Yang — Rival and target of Cai’s resentment. Cai blamed Cheng for taking the seventh core-disciple position, hired Star Tower to assassinate him, and lost a direct fight against him. 6 18 21
- Cai Qiming — Father. Cai sought his financial and political support for revenge; Cai Qiming initially demanded reconciliation, then decided Cheng must die for the family’s security. 19 21
- Qian Biao — Subordinate and lackey. Cai supplied him with resources, ordered him to investigate Cheng, and used him to test Cheng’s strength. 8 10 11
- Yang Zheng — Third Senior Brother and Cai’s strongest supporter in Chen Clan Martial Hall; the Cai Family sponsored him. 9 12
- Chu Yunjiang — Rival from the competing Chu Family. Chu recognized Cai’s narrow-mindedness and warned Cheng to beware of him. 8 12
- Chen Feiyi — Chen Clan Martial Hall master whose selection of Cheng as seventh core disciple shattered Cai’s ambitions. 6 9
Trivia
- Cai’s attempt to have Cheng Yang killed through Star Tower cost nearly all the savings he had accumulated over many years. 18
- His failure to secure the seventh position was especially painful because Chen Feiyi considered seven his lucky number and intended it to be his final personal-disciple slot. 6
