Background

Wei He commands Qinglin County's City Guard, a force of roughly four hundred armed martial artists. His position was granted by the Five Elements Sect, and his military authority places the Wei Family above Qinglin County's other major lineages. Even Chen Feiyi considers the City Guard too formidable for a Force Tempering Martial Master to confront directly. 28 43

Seeking to recruit Cheng Yang, Wei He offered him a recommendation letter for direct entry into the Five Elements Sect, access to Wei Family resources, and personal martial guidance. In return, Cheng had to marry into the Wei Family as a live-in son-in-law and adopt the Wei surname. 31

Cheng refused, citing his duty as the Cheng Family's sole heir and his intention to earn sect entry through the Ascending Dragon Conference. Humiliated by the rejection, Wei He retaliated by ordering Cheng's inclusion in the vanguard of the City Guard's bandit-suppression operation. 31 32

Wei He is authoritative, proud, and accustomed to obedience. His initial offer to Cheng Yang is framed as an opportunity, but his insistence that Cheng immediately accept reveals that he treats the arrangement as a demand rather than a negotiation. 31 32

He is also vindictive: after Cheng declines the Wei Family arrangement, Wei uses his authority to place him in a dangerous military operation. 32 34 However, he is not merely self-serving. During the beast tide, he personally charges the tiger-like beast commanding the horde, sustaining crippling injuries while creating the opportunity for the surviving forces to escape. 45

After learning of Cheng Yang's extraordinary performance at the Ascending Dragon Conference, Wei He abandons his resentment. He concludes that binding such a genius to the Wei Family as a matrilocal son-in-law would have limited Cheng's potential, and later deploys City Guard soldiers to protect him from assassination. 64 65

As commander, Wei He leads the operation against the Big-Ears Gang. After the apparently easy assault becomes a coordinated beast ambush, he organizes the defense and personally battles the tiger-like beast controlling the horde. His victory drives the beasts away but leaves him gravely wounded. 43 44 45

Reassessment of Cheng Yang

While bedridden, Wei He learns that Cheng Yang has reached Bone Tempering and placed first in the Ascending Dragon Conference's initial trial. He releases his earlier grievance and acknowledges that Cheng's independence better serves such exceptional talent. 64
